chkil: Major powers will saturate your air-defences with stand off munitions. Just look how Iraqi and Libyan air-defences faired. The only real solution is MANPAD's and tactical air-defenses like SHORAD to deal with other African nations. Because if one of the big boys come for you, there aint sh1t you can do about it except disperse your equipment, bury your guns and get ready for a long insurgency 2 Likes |

africaken254: That incident is famous because it is one of the few times the Angolans/Cubans actually managed to hit us. Plenty of stories of how the Angolans and Cubans tried for months in vein to hit our G6's that were plastering Quito We never had air-superiority, air-parity during certain operations maybe... but our bases were too far away and our Mirages too valuable to risk most of the time. The Mirages could only carry enough fuel + weapons to make short sorties over the front and flying constant air-patrols in Angolan airspaces, where we had no "eyes" would only have lead to constant ambushes by superior numbers of more expendable jets. 1 Like |

Henry240: There is no other possible reason that you could ever defend the T72... T64 maybe... but T72 is a death trap. Every single time it has seen action shows us this. |

patches689: Libya and Iraq was under embargo and sanction for more than 20 years befors attack , their air defense syystems was very old and obsolete and most important was not mobile , now with mobile systems like S300 with complex network with many lanchers and station, and the pantsir ect ... you can move them in war situation , keep them hidden and use them when you want ! any ennemy without nowing were are your air defense systems and what number you have in the area or how many you still are hidding will be not free to fly or do what he want , he willl be veryy carrefuly and limit his operation . 1 Like |

chkil: Iraq wasnt embargoed before the first Gulf War... infact the whole world gave generously to help them fight Iran With synthetic apeture radar, long range drones and signals intercepts they will have a pretty good idea. Remeber the number 1 rule for radar operators: If you can see them, they can see you Pantsyr is about as big as would make sense in S.S Africa, because it is a tactical and not strategic weapon. Anything bigger will be a waste of time and money. Frankly, if Nigeria gets JF-17's it will dominate the region for the foreseeable future. patches689: for first Gulf War, Coalition loss 75 aircrafts (63 U.S., 12 Allied) ,shoted down by the the iraqian air defense and number 1 rule for a jet fighter pilots when you have signal that a S300 illuminate you , make evasive manoeuvre fast as you can and run for your life , the S300 is a complexe system with many detection radar and lanchers and can work with other air defense systems and radars and most important is mobile , in few minute he can start his radar , lanchers also can be operational in few minute , do their job of making enemy jet scared and turn off then move to another place . |

patches689: You do know Chkil is Algerian right, hence a different threat assessment from what from the Nigerian POV? The Algerian military fields the S-300, Pantsir S2 and ground based anti-air artillery /Manpads, including top of the line Air superiority fighters. They possess a significant envelope of air deterrent to scare away countries like France, Italy and any possible air based threat in their region. The Algerians are no Libyans or Iraqis, they know how to fight, they are quite good at it. 3 Likes |

Munich shooting: Nigeria ready to assist Germany defeat
terrorism- President President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said Nigeria is ready to assist Germany to defeat terrorism. The president said this after he expressed shock and horror at the shootings which recently rocked Munich, Germany. In a terse statement by the Special Adviser to the President on media and publicity, Mr. Femi Adsina, the president said that a united force by world countries, evil would be defeated. The statement read thus: "On behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Buhari sends his most sincere condolences to the families and friends of victims of the barbaric act. "The President says it is quite unfortunate and inconceivable that the forces of evil do not relent on their activities, but expresses confidence that with the unanimity of purpose from all forces around the world, the workers and perpetrators of these evil acts will not prevail. "The President also assures the people of Germany that Nigerians as a people are standing with them at this time and are ready to assist in any way to defeat the planners and executors of such crimes." |

French Shipyard OCEA Launched the OPV 190 MKII "Fouladou" for the Navy of Senegal French Shipyard OCEA launched a new type of Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), the 58 meters OPV 190 MKII, for the navy of Senegal on July 21st, 2016 in Sables d’Olonne (Western France). 1 Like

Nice beautiful boat for Senegal, at 58 meters, it's a decent size for a small sea going OPV, however it's a little to large for littoral Patrol and not big enough for proper ocean going. Anyway they won't need to patrol far into sea while smaller 10 - 25 meters boats can patrol inshore. Brings us to Nigeria, Vessels like the OPV 190 could represent a decent acquisition for the Navy instead of only investing in large OPVs. At 58 meters, local Nigerian boat builders could task themselves and build it, Instead of only concentrating on small boat and interceptor builds. 58 meters isn't a significant size. |

MikeCZA: It is primarily because of French difficulties in transporting gear/equipment/men to Mali, that's why i'm saying specifically in a war between Algeria and France(excluding NATO), French forces would be beaten back well. Even the French only re-joined NATO 13 years ago, who says they won't leave again. What can the French deploy against Algeria, that the Algerians won't be able to counter. The Algerians are no common militants in Mali and they have the experience of previously fighting the French, they would match the French fighter for fighter and already poses more Tanks than the French. Do you think the Algerians would seat back and watch the French build up a military presence on their borders, won't happen. Algerian military doctrine only revolves around protecting Algeria and nothing else. |
