DIKEnaWAR: You either don't know Nigeria history or changed the narratives to try and absolve Ironsi of any act of omission. The chief of army staff was no any other than TY Danjuma, he personally secured the seat of power while providing logistics and tactical manoeuvres for the infantry boys. He insisted that OBJ and not him should take over while they hurriedly had to fetched out and promote Yar'adua to assuage the battered Hausa Fulanis. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Jombojombo:He was the most senior officer at that time and no one would ask him to simply sit down and take the back seat and he also led the counter operation against the plotters of the first coup which you were right but the question is : what was his actions especially against the coup plotters when he became the major beneficiary of that same coup ? 4 Likes 1 Share |

You don't go killing people mindlessly and still be a beneficiary of that night of madness |

Ironsi's failure to deal decisively with the coup plotters which was largely perceived as an ethnic coup gives an untoward impression of a tacit support to the cause of the coup plotters, and more so, coming from this same ethnic group. Hence the growing discontent within the military ranks which led to his death. However, you can't rule out the obsession of some officers just to penetrate and perpetuate their selves in power politics in Nigeria. If not for anything, history will always remember him as an officer who restored peace and order at a time the country was about drifting away from the precipice. 2 Likes 1 Share |

And Fajuyi (who was his host) insisted that he must go with them where they were going.Yet some Igbos would rather we believed Fajuyi was even more of a target than Ironsi. 1 Like |

Truckpusher: His inactions or action of securing the coup plotters in the east with foot dragging on the the punishment for them led many people to conclude that he was out to buy time and protect them. Aguiyi Ironsi inadvertently created this mess Nigeria is still struggling with after 50 years In life, you reap what you sow. 8 Likes 1 Share |

As long as injustice continues to thrives in this nation so long there can never be peace and meaningful progress. Just imagine a former Head of state killed while on active duty and abandoned just like that yet they remember Mutala Mohammed every year and immotalize him. If possible they will want to do same for late Abacha, IBB and the rest. Yet MKO the well known hero of our democracy forgotten by federal govt. I dont think we know what we are doing in this country, how a set of nomads patrolling the desert can infiltrate our country and want to lord it over those who have baffles me. If govt likes let them not honor their veterans, if they like let them continue to play politics with the unity of this country. All I know is that any structure built on shaky ground will surely collapse oneday. Even till this day what was 50 years ago is still rife with us. My happiness is that the new generation does not care about history, they will settle everything once and for all when they start. So the old brigade can continue in the delusion that they can continue with all the lies and falsehood until that day of the Lord, Everything will be settled and the captives will be let loose to go and pursue their destiny. 1 Like |

Quakertellicus1: You can't argue with a man with his gun holster dangling for all to see and with some murderous army boys surrounding you. They actually had to scribble the handover note under duress using a small sheet of paper they could lay hands on. There are so many accounts of how Ironsi took power from the politicians, 3 Likes 1 Share |

Jombojombo: The anger [by the Awusas] after Ironsi assumed leadership was that he failed to deal squarely with the coup-plotters and "murderers". He was more interested in the sweetness of his new powers than being concerned about the regional tension that the 1966 coup was quickly instigating. The lesson in his death is that, justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done! 5 Likes |

AgentOrange: That was a huge mistake but we must also remember that that was the first time we had to deal with such a situation. So there was no precedent. Brand new situation. If only he killed the plotters, the north would have been placated. Then again, January to July wasn't too long to assume that he wasted too much time. He would have been seen as being too much in a hurry if he had killed the plotters within a couple of months. We are not aware of the activities of UN and other human rights then. The picture is fragmented and it is difficult to piece together what dilema these young officers must have faced in those days as regards their decision making. What is appalling is not the first coup, second coup or the Civil War, but our inability to learn from them and move forward as a united nation. The same problems that we faced in the 50s and 60s are here with us today. It is even worse. Shameful. 14 Likes |
