Kano by-election: PDP candidate withdraws few hours to election
Few hours to the conduct of Minjibir bye-election, candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Auwalu Ubale Minjibir has withdrawn from the contest.

Minjibir also known as Shagon Minjibir made his withdrawal known through a Kano-based private radio, Rahmah Radio in the early hours of today.

Minjibir alleged that "I have withdrawn because the ruling party has deployed thugs to Minjibir town a day to the election with intention to disrupt the election.

I am not a troublemaker and I don't want to be involved in anything trouble and I don't want to be associated with it."

Reacting to the development, the state Commissioner of Information, Malam Muhammadu Garba described the development as unfortunate.

He said: "Minjibir should have announced his stand 2-3 days to the election. But I think he has made a wrong decision and I am sure INEC is not aware of the development."

When contacted, the Public Relation Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission Kano Office, Alhaji Garba Lawal Muhammad said INEC has not received any official letter from the PDP candidate in that respect.

"We only heard his withdrawal over the radio and our officials are currently at Minjibir local government conducting the bye-election," he said.

Muhammad however said the commission is still waiting for the PDP candidate to officially notify it on his stand.

He withdrew because the oppositions have deployed people to disrupt the election. Ogbeni, would your withdrawal stop them from doing what they were deployed to do?.

The candidate of killer party is afraid of the defeat, hence his withdrawal. The coward is afraid of the broom.

How can he gave this kind of excuse 24 hours to election? This is an act of cowardice and its not good for our democracy, does it mean people are scared to face opposition in an election? He should have complain to the law enforcement officials instead of withdrawing like a coward. Or is defeat starring him in the face because Kano is predominantly an APC stronghold? So many questions on this, but I guess the PDP candidate knows better. I wish we can have a country where election will not be a do or die , where people will be free to elect there leaders without fear or favour.
