Our language is going into extinction (Parents who never let their children speak Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa) will you do the same?

Over the years Africans have found themselves having mixed identity. We want to act european  and at the same time apply our culture in areas that are convenient for us.

One minutes we are waltzing and sipping tea,the other we are dancing to vigorous rhythm of the talking drum and bàtá. We have lost our identity. Who are we? What did we do before?

It is an undeniable fact that these days, we find African parents who will never let their children speak their indigenous language at home or outside the home setting. These same parents will ask them to kneel or prostrate to greet their elders . 'It is your culture' they say. Cultural hypocrisy!!  What about the language? Isn't it a part of their culture too?. They do this mostly because they want their wards to fit into the civil community. They forget that you are either in or out,you cannot waltz and drum at the same time.

Culture has taken over the so called religion, Europeanized methods over our schools. Methods that we cannot totally commit to, methods that we do not understand because of the rigid nature of our culture . We play the piano at first and when our fingers itch, switch to drums.

Some school of thought argue that the best way to survive in the vast competition among developing African countries is to fit into the European culture. They talk about the usefulness and advantages of technology (cars , better health services, mobile phones etc). Yes, but this shouldn't affect our culture. In fact, it should facilitate it.

How about the monarchical method of ruling in Britain . They maintain rituals and these ceremonies are seen as normal to the world. How about we introduce our culture to the world and let them see it as 'normal'.

Others will argue that we could find an equilibrium ; the condition of a system in which competing influences are balanced . Well, need I say its what we've been doing. Playing piano and drums. It is what you do when you wear 'Kente' on
 denim; an equilibrium;cultural diffusion.

Okay.Maybe , just maybe some of culture and traditions are archaic and cannot be totally effective in a modern ambit. We could focus more on

 Language

Dressing

Folklore

If our history is completely lost, we have no identity. Out identity is who we are. SOURCE: https://odunayoibitoye./2016/06/17/piano-and-drums/

Is a matter or choice but being a bilingual is quite an advantage. What of multilingual? My dear, is an edge.

Most def. Our indigenous languages are so delicious and sweet sounding. I still don't understand why some parents forbid their kids speaking these languages; some even say it would ruin the kids' ability to speak good English!

Nigerians sha...

You are right op. Until we start to bring oursleve out of the bondage of mental slavery then our culture will start to hold ground again.
Then in secondry school if you speak your native language you have to pay some certain money or you receive Cain telling us vernacular speaking is highly prohibited.. What's an insult to our culture .

Meanwhile China, Japan are doing better with their language and culture. Here in Africa we trying to imitaite the oyibos
