ahhh you got me grin

Mini-SS is neato too... just doesnt seem that the roll out is happening. I know that we are replacing the MAG's with SS-77's as they wear out... but I have yet to see any one with Mini-SS's in the regular battalions.
The SANDF doesn't have a SAW.

The SS-77 can be converted into the Mini-SS(5.56mm).

You're a classic case of the reason why i always tell contributors to always read properly before replying. Luckily for me, the internet does not forget.

The following are my initial posts on the use of PGM, and your subsequent poorly thought out reply.

Then in reply to Africaken, i said this

...Now, with out properly reading and understanding my comment, you jumped in out of nowhere and posted this,

You see why it's paramount to read and understand what has been read.

Another poorly informed, most likely ignorant comment. For operations in the North-East, Nigeria dedicated, Circa 2013

- 2x ATR-42 Surveillance Aircrafts.

- 2x King Air350i surveillance planes

- in 2014, 5x CH-3A drones with AR-1 Precision Guided Munitions were acquired.

So we had/have that capability to track day/night and in any weather condition. Again you don't fire PGMs at a column of Boko-Haram convoy, what is required is a salvo of rockets or an aircraft's 30mm gun.

You probably have been sleeping all through out your time here in Nairaland.com (2012 - Present), because if you weren't you'll know that we've had the capabilities to track targets both day and night even before the Chibok girls.
the CH-3A is limited by line of sight and can only land and takeoff from a tarmac Runway.
also you see a 3,000 vehicle but could be loaded with weapons,it could be a SVBIED,the individual inside the vehicle could be most wanted terrorist e.t.c .if you see a convoy of boko haram would you dare swoop low, know well there is a high possibility of being shot down with anti- aircraft guns !its well documented that nigeria air force has used belouga cluster bomb, whats the reason !

" $25,000/bomb x 1000 targets"?? What are you talking about?

Stop making it look like we're saying that every target needs to be hit with an expensive Bomb, we're not stupid.. What we're saying is that if a target is worth getting hit with a $25,000 bomb then it must me done. It has been discussed many times before, that if Countries like Nigeria had invested in quality weapons long before Boko-haram became a threat, this war wouldn't have lasted so long, Nigeria suffered unnecessary losses and set back because you didn't have the proper equipment to support your troops.
We use to see videos of large Boko-Haram convoys moving in the open which could've been torn apart by two J-17's armed with targeting pods and Precision Munitions.

After the Chibok kidnappings the Airforce could've dispatched air craft with night vision capabilities to track the girls and made it easier to find them.

Anyway, for reference purposes, this is Turkey, a country which has over 240 F-16 Block 52+, 54 upgraded F-4 phantoms, can you please explain despite been able to deliver PGMs, Southern Turkey looks like Aleepo in Syria.

What are you even saying?

The CH-3As are based at the Tactical Air Command in Markurdi (Central Nigeria), from where they conduct ISTAR operations all over the North-East hundreds of Kilometers away.

The CH-3A, Gulma and Yahbon Flash 20 are all BVLOS operated.

Where does the Reaper land and take off from...... The sea?

The Nigerian Air Force has released over 30 combat videos from operations in the N.E, have you even watched any at all?

there is a difference between a UAV/UCAV operated within line of sight and those beyond line of sight ,CH-3A can only operate within line of sight or it will loose its signal with ground station antenna due to the curvature of the earth. but a drone like predator which can operate beyond line of sight ,due to it capability to bounce signal from orbiting satellites .thus maintaining a connection between the drone and ground control station and increasing its range

If you have very poor training and doctrine the weapons you have become useless. But I would expect Nigeria to do better than the Turks.

Plus posting random urban pictures out of context doesn't mean anything, because we've all seen that least 80% of the engagements with Boko-haram happened in open and rural areas where it would've been much easier to deliver precision munitions.

just look at that urban setting, terrorist and insurgents could be moving through walls house to house, dig tunnel to move from open spaces, snipe you from a house with the next house still having civilians residing.ever heard of house to house combat ,this is the exact situation if you dont want to reduce a whole neighbourhood into rubble.during the american First Battle of Fallujah they did take out certain houses with precision bomb, when insurgents barricaded themselves inside

Again you clearly misinterpreted my original post on this matter.

The Turks are not poorly trained, they have a rich modern military history, I believe you've heard of the battle of "Gilapoli".

let me try to rephrase Turkey has 240 F-16 Block 52+ fighter jets in service. They have the PGMs, I'm asking you why does Southern-Turkey despite all the PGMs look like Aleppo. You claimed PGMs are the "all and be all"?

Are you serious

The P in PGM means Precision, you use PGM in urban areas so you can reduce civilian casualties and increase the probability of hitting the enemy, you don't use PGMs in wide open spaces when you can simply obliterate the enemy to submission with an array of cost effective rockets and unguided bombs.

Dude look main point from the start is that if a target is worth getting Hit with a $25,000 Bomb then it should be done, even if it's a man travelling in a $3,000 car.

The Video @africaken254 posted was a single car getting blown up with a PGM, I see nothing wrong with him using that Kenya could do that too..
It may look inefficient but fact is who ever was in that car was planning on doing damage worth more than $25,000.

If you're facing a war at home you can't afford to be cheap, you make sure your citizens have what they need to survive, then the rest of the money goes to the war effort.

10 internets to you good sir!!

Its a remarkable SAW, almost no recoil.

One would think they would sell like condoms in a brothrel. But for some reason they are pretty rare, maybe Singapors limited manufacturing capacity has something to do with it.

Suffice as to say, if the SANDF were to drop the R4 +50 round mag in favor of it, I would be thrilled.

The problem is the 100 round drum. Causes stoppages. That's why the Singapore army runs it with mags. The original R-4 50 round mag was meant for the planned heavy barrel R-4 that was never adopted. We didn't have that many problems with the 50 rounders as long as you download them to 40-45. They might just be getting old now. Mags don't last forever. The 35 round mag also had to be downloaded to 30 for it to function properly.

Personally, i don't like the 5.56 saw concept and you can see the countries involved in Afghanistan/Iraq now having buyer's regret. If your squad can't handle the weight, you have a fitness problem not a caliber one. Mujahideen hump 7.62 PKM over mountain ranges all day long on a loaf of flatbread.
Here's a pick of the r4 heavy as well as the new denel 20mm belt fed.

National Defence College set to induct of military officers from Brazil, Turkey, Germany, India in Sept. The National Defence College (NDC) says it will, for the first time in its history, admit foreign participants from Brazil, Turkey, Germany and India, for the college’s next academic programme to be inaugurated on Sept. 15, 2016. The college secretary, Air Vice Marshal Uko Ebong disclosed this on Friday in Abuja while addressing a news conference on the forthcoming graduation of institution’s course 24 participants. According to AVM Ebong, admitting foreign participants from these countries would improve the institution’s strategic partnership with the armed forces countries around the world. He added that the interest shown in the college’s academic programme was a testimony to the excellence that the college had attained over the years. His words, ``The National Defence College provides the highest level of formal military education intended to inculcate a sense of advance military professionalism and involvement in the decision making process. “I am happy to state here that the next course of the NDC will be having participants from Turkey, Germany, India, Brazil and other allied African countries and it is expected to be inaugurated on Sept. 15, 2016. “It is my earnest desire to continue to promote the college as the centre of excellence for developing potential strategic leaders in Africa and globally’.’ Ebong noted that the college would in the nearest future open its doors to participants from the private sector as part of efforts to increase public awareness on the issue of national security. He said the college’s proposal to admit participants from the private sector was also borne out of the need to increase the understanding of civilians on defence and security issues. Ebong said the college had in the past years of its existence made deliberate efforts to improve on the content and quality of its programmes which had attracted interests within and outside Africa. He said alumni of the college had distinguished themselves in different positions of responsibility given them both at strategic and command levels. The secretary of the college said some aspects of the institution’s curriculum had been reviewed while infrastructure and other facilities at the college had been upgraded in line with its growing status. On the course 24 graduation, Ebong said 130 participants comprising officers from the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Service participated in the course. According to him, other participants of the course 24 include officers from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Immigration Service, Ministry of Defence and allied countries of Ghana, Sierra-Leone, Benin and Zambia. Ebong said the overall performance of participants was adjudged above average while their general conduct was satisfactory. He said the highpoint of the graduation ceremony was the presentation of certificates to participants by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 5. Ebong added that the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido would deliver the graduation lecture on August 3 on the theme `Deregulation of the downstream oil sector and Nigeria’s economic development: an appraisal’. It will be recalled that the graduating NDC course 24 was inaugurated in September 2015.

U.S. contractors employ four-wheeled, remotely-driven vehicles to detour would-be insurgents and keep soldiers in the Horn of Africa out of harm's way. The MDARS UGV is a valuable tool in keeping the perimeter intact.

You havent done much shooting have you?

If you are guessing the distance and shooting down-hill at a moving target, its pretty damn tough

Also, the bullets were landing at the same time you hear the shot. Which means he was close. I bet he had zeroed for a much longer range

Interesting.

Well, my thoughts on weight were based on the age old adage that a soldier can only hump like 40-60kg, so you save weight on your SAW and thus can carry more of something else.

That 20mm going to see service?

That plus the new low-cost turret from Denel could serve as major organic fire-support for Moto Inf if mounted on a Casspir or Nyala.
