I thought "Tears of A Soldier" was real.
I received the message from a friend A Cadet in NDA.
I thought i was real.
So its 'All' a fiction.
Thats why i google the story to find any clue about the story.
It reLly spoilt my day.
I was feeling for Lt. Abbey thinking its real...
Am an NDA aspirant
You discouraged me with this story.
If its real please tell me.
Am sooo sad since this evening.
I pray its a fiction as you said.

Haba, real ke? Didn't u see the disclaimer at the beginning of the story? Anyway if dz little military romantic war story can discourage then I believe u shud not step ur foot into nda talkless of getting commissioned coz as a soldier u might be lucky to go to war wia u see ur best friend getting shot etc. Even more gruesome tins than dz will definitely happen.

Bro go to a civillian school school coz in nda they will make u do it even against ur own wish. Peace and as far as the story has been, dia z ntin yet tragic abt it. We signed for d job we knew it was hell like dz still some of us left civillian schools as medical student and still hjijacked the form wia its resting.

Wow am so glad ur dad found it quite interesting. And I know their labour in the civil war will never be in vain. They are our heros and you should be proud you have a dad who served his country not even minding paying d price with z own life which many have done including my own dad. Send my regards and tell him hope the morale z still high

How else can one explain a morale that's reusing to come down even at old age? He will be 80 soon and none amongst us his kids could walk faster than him, he said soilders never gets tired...I am proud to have him as a father... May ur dad continue to enoy the rest he deserves....god bless the ever gallant. Nigerian Army

Continuation.

We arrived and were treated to what I call a christmas delicacy judging by what we eat in the jungle. We were at the quarter guard throughout of arrest under detention although with little or no connection with the outside world. Although, we didn't know the fate that might befall us, yet we were little or so glad we were out of the death trap in boruno. Atleast for the time being and till our fate z established.

Days went on and I was informed by a coursemate of mine who z an Mp that we would be facing trial in the coming week. We were entitled to a lawyer who came just once to hear from us. But from the onset of our. Meeting I ceased to like him. Lolz dnt ask why.

We prayed in the little hole we were for favour, although mutiny was a major offense which I dnt think z forgivable prior to the military ethics. But deep inside us we knew we commited No mutiny. It was just a show of emotion from an estranged sassy soldier who couldn't keep z emotions and was so unfortunately romantic to be among my squad. The deed was already done we just have to take responsibility hitherto. Although, I knew the greatest part of the responsibility should be on me since I could not take care and put my man under control.

After what seem like forever, our day of trial was conceived and we were marched in handcuff to the officers mess where our fate is to be decided.

The courmartial was made up of 10 senior officers with a 1* (Brig gen) as the chief judge.
I didn't know how my mum got to know but in a bid to gain entry into the officers mess, my coursemate LtBalogun was who I saw he handed me a note, which was a piece of words from my mum going by d handwriting.
Seeing the letter was what broke my heart, but imagining what will be going through my mums mind at that very minute moved me to tears. Who told u a soldier never cries. All I could think of was the heartbreak, the emotional distability my mum would be passing through at that very moment by imagining his only son killed while defending what he loves most with z soul, body, heart, mind and even life. All dz broke my heart the more and I made up my mind nothing z what dying for. I would face whatever comes nothing can break my heart again. The greateest heartbreak I could hv z my mumsdistress and tears. I decided even if I am to be executed I would face it without a tear dropping from my delicate face. I felt betrayed by my own kinsmen, I felt betrayed by my own country and I felt I was dying just like a chicken not the way I intended to die although. Anyway why the thought sef. Judgement z yet to be passed. Have seen many people die, and it doesn't mean a tin to me again but seeing myself dying...... Hmm

Exactly five months after our Pop the insurgency in a certain part of the countrt got to the climax and many a officers and soldiers were posted to the land of boruno. Oh boruno, the blood thirsty land. The home where heroes were swallowed. The greatest nightmare of any soldier. Anyway, to cut the long epistle short, I was among (should I say the unfortunate) officers or lemme say soldiers who were dispatched to the blood thirsty land. Alongside my coursemate that had same fate like me were 2Lt(s) Olumide, Uwezukwe, Audu, balogin and many more.

We all met in the capital of boruno where we were all dispatched to diff town with the inhabitants of dz town mostly terrorist with little or no Friendly. Anyway, I was dispatched to a town of 32 heactares of land filled with pple and about 800 hectares of land lemme say majorly forest filled with insurgents. I know it was a death trap, and I know the inevitable might occur more early than I envisageg. Anyway, be it what come may I was ready to killand die for one thing we believe in most HONOUR and VALOUR. I kissed my mum amidst her tears and I promised her I would return, but the state I would, I don't know maybe dead.
I journeyed to my place of operation with no fear of the future, because of we had to fight for is the very minute. I got to my little detachment and I found I had only 2 superiors an elderly major and a very vibrant captain. A lot of responsibility lies on my shoulder and I stacked out on order from my superior. I spoke with most of the personnels present and a very young and intelligent 18 years old private caught my attention. Deep inside I said a prayer for him that he won't hesitate in the moment of truth so he won't become dead. All been said and done I briefed them on our mission and made them realise how we need to be in one accord FIGHT OR DIE I hammered at them. I told them we can't all go home alive, many will get wasted but one thing is sure, our legacy lives on. And I reminded them of the greatest script of valour (a soldier doesn't fight bacause he hates what's in front, a soldier fight coz he loves what he left behind)

We got armed trying to navigate our route in the thick forest and maybe get a clue about our enemies. We never knew that day had a bitter plan in stock for us

Regulars with samas enh! Nice constructive english but u just dey baptize ur cosmates!

Wrong man! There is no vaccum in the army, a major is normally a Company OC in a battalion but he can b posted on acting role as per acting CO.

Since more men were deployed to your unit making a total of 282 men I think a Lt. Col should be part of that deployment becos that number of men can form a battalion divided into 3 companies of 90 men cos a company is made up of bw 80-120 men with a major commanding one and assisted by a Captain. The Companies will be further divided into 3 platoons of of 30 men each commanded by a Lt. and assisted by a 2nd Lt. A 2nd Lt should command a squad/section of bw 8-15 men. So the 40 man recon team u led should be reduced to 15 to reflect military realities. It should be a military squad of 15.

Many protocols are kept aside or broken in a warring environment.

And especially when there is less manpower, a fit Corporal might take the task meant for a Staff-sergeant.

I went out with 40men we had barely walked for 20mins when grenade were thrown at us and another IED explode. We took cover and engaged our enemy in a repel attack. At that minute, my life flashed back to me. I am 24years old, hv never seen a real war.
Before we could open fire, the deed was already done. 5 men were already in pieces with scattered body parts, 6 were casualties struggling in between life and death. The corpsmen were attending 2 d injured while we the rest engaged them in a fire fight.
Oh the sounds of live rounds, oh the very sound of agony. All dz were songs to our ear, we had no choice we had to kill or die. We repelled their fire out of anger, we broke skulls with bullets and they broke ours too. After a 20mins that sounds like forever, of very heavy gun fire, the terrorrist were retreating and scappered for safety, we tried chasing after them but we couldn't because most of dz guys are very experienced they hv been fighting since we were 9 or 10. They are experience, they are hard, they will stop at nothing; it might even be one of their strategy and above all the reason, we were never prepared for dz. We never knew theur could be an early attack at that time.
Anyway, we've learned our lessons but in a very bitter way.
Now back to the casualties. The tottal number of dead was 15 and injured 5 on our side. Although, the figure wasmuch bigger on our enemies part. Death record was 46 but before we could get to the injured and do justice to the little breath in them, they hv either been killed by their own men or dragged away D reason was not clear to us. Anyway, I cried all the tears in my eyes that day when I reached the barracks not because my soldiers die but also because I knew what war really meant. I knew the weight of my job and that day had an impact in my life. Even till dz moment I haven't recovered from it.

Secondly, it was my first day out and I loosed 15 gallant men and I did not even die or got shot. It was something I could never forgive myself for.
Anyway, we boxed up the dead (the little ones we could merge there body together) and sent it in a truck home fo there last respect and rounds of gun fire
. touching part. I know will return but in what state? I do not know
