First, How many folks can afford to cough out =N=300k in 1999 ? A good short term player make well over =N=50m for same 17yrs period.

I dont think I am willing to stick out my neck for any coy for 17 years, too much risks and uncertainty. Nestle is just one tough -lucky damn stock on the NSE that had consistently performed in terms dividend and cap appreciation.

Honestly, how many blue chip stocks on the NSE can match Nestle performance? Ask those folks that bought FBN around =N=33/Share and still holding, ask those folks that bought UBA at =N=37, ask those folks that bought Oando =N=125/share and still holding .... Ask shareholders of Oceanic, Intercontinental, Cadbury, etc etc etc.

I always smile when some advocate of long term holding always quote Buffet in support of their analysis, Nigeria is a different ball game where coys executive are too greedy & involved in sharp practices. I have learnt to lock my profit as soon as they appear and cut losses as soon as they emerge.

I know a couple of people who could cough out 300k and above on cars, vacation, clothes, partying, clubbing etc in 1999 who are now in penury. I also know average guys who earned about 120k per annum in 1999, who are now controlling multi million net worth and assets through hard work, discipline, focus, long-term planning and investment, forward thinking investments decision, daring to be different and God's grace.

Being a long term investor does not mean you invest and go to sleep. I bought Unipetrol now Oando in 1994 when I was a student in the University but sold in 2013 when I lost confidence in the ability, sincerity and integrity of the managers.

. Show me an average teacher, civil servant, lecturer, journalist, lawyer etc who has a minimum of stocks valued at N50 million and above excluding his/her real estate investment, there a 70% probability that such a person is a long term investor.

You are Right most of them are long Term investors.

These people just buy shares and keep for the future, they even transfers it to their children.

My Dad was angry at me the first time i told him about the JIJO concept grin grin grin. He kept saying you children of nowadays are impatient.

What is the percentage of those folks in this category, maybe just few lucky ones.

I have been an active investor since yr 2000, if you give me another chance to move back, I will rather be a JIJO/short term master than buying shares for long term keep. It aint worth it at all.

Btw March - Aug 2016, a period of 6 months, I should be making like 750k on JIJO alone.

If you purchase 500,000 shares of FBN in March 2016 at an historical low of =N=3.20k and sold at =N=4.36k in May 2016 during the height of the rumour of floating exchange rate, you will have a profit of not less than =N=500k within a 3 months cycle.

If you reinvest your principal back into GTB at =N=20/=N=21 BTW June & July 2016, you will have like 70,000 shares, GTB shares will hit at least =N=24 /=N=25 as a result of interim dividend, you will have profit of not less than =N=250k in another 3 months cycle. Move your gains to TBills of 180days @ 14% will give you additional income of =N=50k from Sept 2016 with your capital & profit intact for another trading session.

We still have the Dec/Jan rally and March/April rally..

Why wait till KM10 when I can achieve my objective at KM1, KM3, KM6, KM7 and take my profit and cut my losses. What is the assurance that you will even get to KM10 ?

I trust you to have critically lectured him that its a way of technically 'flying without perching' since the various managements have developed guaranteed ways of destroying log-term investments without 'missing'....Tell him if he had grown up in your generation, his money would have been used to DEVELOP CARS THAT RUN ON WATER.....(Bank PHB).... grin grin grin

The bulls are expected to hit the market from this week on some stocks... Don't be hastily in your decisions... Avoid stocks with technicalities, depending on what you want don't run in and out of some stocks without due diligence study on your path... Have a glorious new month of August which starts the trading week... YOUR PORTFOLIO must encounter the GREEN ZONE!!!

Tripple Poka for you...To summarize, uncertainty of consistent business performance and continuity including unstable government economic policy makes holding stock for long period undesirable...

I could not agree with you more. Most BnSiTL know that I was more of a long term investor even though I do short term trades. But after after doing a lot of research and calculations, I decided to settle for the latter. Nigeria is not a country where you invest for long term and expect to sleep peacefully or with both eyes closed as is expected in a normal economy. For me, apart from Nestle, and maybe Dangcem, I don't see any other stock that is worth the risk of a long term investment in the NSE. If I want to be careless I may include GTB, NB and TOTAL PLC. As a short term investor (I'm not talking about JIJO), if you know your technicals very well and, you are disciplined, you will definitely be more successful than a long term investor (as long as the investment is done in the NSE). My only advice for those who still believe in Long Term is that when doing due diligence, they should always remember to include corruption and uncertainty to their DD instead of just relying on figures and ratios in some annual reports of some companies managed by corrupt officials in a corrupt country.

The truth is that investment of this days doesn't warrant one to buy a stock and go to sleep, because the market is very volatile and before you know it you would have lost all your so called long-term investment. U can buy for the long-term and still keep your eyes on the stock. JIJO when necessary and still buy same stock when the market is stable.

The only stock DT can go long term in my portfolio is d stock I can't sell. Like investment and alliance, etc

Also investments DT I've lost d certificate like lotus capital halal fund DT was packaged for us like stock.

I don't trust stock MKT , so I keep moving my money to real estate which is more stable when it gets to a certain threshold.

Our old soldiers don't like taking lectures from the new generation.

They accept everything these management throw at them.

You will see them struggling for overpriced Rights Issues, as if they're not paying for it. grin grin

He learnt the hard way, when he wanted to sell off his Dunlop shares and the broker keep telling him nobody is buying because company is no longer functioning well in Nigeria.

You need to see drama .

But our generation seem to be smarter and profit oriented.

Hello guys ,

Please understand that the times have changed, the times we are in times were it's how fast you can make money.

Long time investments are dead, but in Nigeria una still carry for head. The investors you have now bought those share at least 20 years ago. Times have changed, corporate governance is weak,

I remember buying japaul at 90k and sold for 6.90 in a year before the global crash. The same japaul is now print losses as if it's competition. Imagine if held onto the stocks.

We don't know how to manage businesses in the country. Continue for short time plays and pull out your profit fast.

Dunlop!!!! Hahahahahaha. Who wan buy??
Events in the Nigerian economy and corporations don't seem to support long term investing. In the current dispensation one can't bet on more than 2 companies.

My cousin severely got burnt when she ploughed all the gratuity of her late dad into the market. A lot more people with long term plans have been consumed by the NSE than it has made them.

Been smart is the key. Choose your battles properly.

Have you guys seen the news of an FCMB manager that committed suicide over the granting of a NPL worth 350m?

What then is the role of all these chartered accountants and auditors?

CBN appears to be slacking big time, it appears there is almost zero corporate governance framework in Nigeria.
