The main problem was the number of average players in the team. Players like Depay, Herrera et al were just too shite to offer anything tangible to the team.

For all Fergie's archivement in his last season, he had a better midfield in a younger Carrick and Scholes whom at 36 is still far better than any of our present CM! He also had a worldcalss striker in Rvp who more or less won the league for us.

That said, Di Maria never settled at the club because he never wanted to come there in the first place and he already made up his mind to move away after the Buglary theft scared him and his family.

Granted the likes of Kagawa and Chicharito left under Van gaal but he never forced them to leave. He just didn't give them any assurance because he doesn't yet know their quality but in the end both wanted to leave because they didn't want what happened to them under Moyes to repeat itself. It was Moyes that broke them and till today, their grudges is with Moyes, not Van gaal.

For me, I have never seen United play with so much passion as they did in the 09/10 season Manchester Derby as well as the 5-2 win against Tottehlnham. Mehn that Manchester Derby was reeking of passion, Giggs was so wonderful in the same length as Forster was shameless inept.
Rooney owned the Tottenham match and ooh Vidic, if he is 26 again today(Vidic), I won't mind United signing him for £200M. Evra for his forward bombings, Scholes Vision, and most importantly PASSION, are what football is greatly lacking today.

This was a display of grit, determination and the undying belief in the fact that we were the best team in england, 1 of the best in europe and tottenham and the rest of the league needed to be reminded of that fact and that a 3rd straight title was coming no matter what! And at the end of the season we ended up CHAMPIONS(again)!

I've been thinking about how opposition would line up, especially in the midfield and from what I could gather, I'd go with this:

Chelsea:

Back 5;
Kante - Matic - Fabregas/Chalobah;
Willian -Batsya - Hazard.

City:

Back 5;
Fernandinho/fit Gundogan - Aleixi - D. Silva;
Debruyne - Aguero - Sane.

Arsenal:

Back 5;
Ramsey/Elney - Xhaka - Ozil;
Ox/**Mahrez - Giroud/**Lacaz - Sanchez.


Spurs:

Back 5;
Dembele/Wanyama - Dier - Alli;
Lamela - Kane - Eriksen.

I also think the reason Pep seems content with his midfield option despite Gundogan's injury is the emergence of the young Aleixi Garcia who has been fantastic in the pre-season.

More so, he seems to fancy Fernandinho in a more mobile role than in the holding midfield which means he already made preparation in Gundogan absence.

What matters most is how the coach makes use of the players available to him and LVG didnt just do well in that aspect, his style of play and philosophy were outright disappointments, I remember he wanted to implement 3-5-2 formation when he came in, but it backfired, his style of looking for multifunctional players by force wasn't good, playing posession soccer when we're not Barca.... Why on earth should you play Young or Di Maria as a striker , If we had a coach like Mou when Di Maria and Falcao came into this club, i believe we would have been far more dangerous than what we were when LVG was here, He hardly came out to even motivate players while they were playing, scribbling down the whole world on his notebook but nothing to show for it....... I wish Angel was still here, then you'll know how devastating he can be when given his way..

Fergie had a good squad to work with. The likes of Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, a younger Carrick, an Inform Rvp, and the ginger man, Scholes even at 36 were all good players and no one should take that from them. No wonder the team still looked good under Moyes in his first few games.
The only setback was that they were ageing and that was where Fergie was able to chalk in the likes of Smalling, Jones, Buttner, Welbeck, Cleverley and even Ando to give them adequate rest.

As for the 3-5-2 formation, it didn't work out because we had few quality CB especially a ball playing one, after the likes of Ferdinand left before Blind emerged. Blackett and Mcnair were often tried out but they all looked inept. Also, Shaw couldn't operate as a wingback in the setup and that was why the likes of Reece, Rojo were preferred to him at first until we eventually changed to a 4-3-3 formation.

Another was the lack of quality free roaming second striker to operate behind the lone striker. Di maria was tried there but he was just too dumb to operate as Robben in that role.

The fact that Van gaal eventually changed the formation to a 4-3-3 setup in order to fit in his players already showed he's welcomed to changes and he's no stubborn. Personally, I love 3-5-2 set up with the right players in it because it helps the team to have more numbers in the midfield and I think Van gaal favoured the tactic because it over-compensate for our lack of quality midfield but sadly, he had few quality players to implement the setup.

Even top quality coach such as Pep used similar 3-4-3 setup at Barca when he realised that Xavi was ageing fast. He also used the same tactic at Bayern.
