Team Profile: Sweden Olympic Record After struggling in their first few Men’s Olympic Football Touraments, a Sven Rydell-inspired Swedish side saw their way to their first bronze medal in 1924 in Paris. The nation enjoyed their Olympic ‘golden age’ immediately after World War Two, picking up their only gold medal in 1948. It took an Englishman, George Raynor, to lead the Swedes to victory in his home country. Gunnar Nordahl, who would go on to become a legend at AC Milan, was the undoubted star of the tournament, scoring seven goals in his four games in London. The Swedes almost matched that triumph four years later in Finland, but the Nordahl-less side fell to the legendary Hungarian team of Ferenc Puskas before beating Germany in the bronze medal match. The Blagult’s most recent Olympic appearance saw them knocked out by Australia in the 1992 quarter-finals. The Road to Rio: Sweden surprised the continent, and the wider footballing world in mid-2015, by winning their first UEFA U-21 European Championship in the Czech Republic. They were expected to struggle in a tough group, which included five-time winners Italy, two-time champions England and 1994 runners-up Portugal, but Hakan Ericson’s side navigated their way through with a win against the Azzurri, a defeat against the Three Lions and a draw against the Seleção. Their second place in the group saw them reach Rio 2016 and set up a mouth-watering semi-final with Nordic neighbours Denmark. They dominated against the Danes, winning 4-1 to set up a showdown with Portugal. A tense final against Rui Jorge’s side ended goalless, with stopper Patrick Carlgren crowned the Swedish hero after saving William Carvalho’s crucial spot kick. Former stars Herbert Carlsson (1920), Sven Rydell (1924), Gunnar Nordahl (1948), Ingvar Rydell (1952), Jan Hellstrom (1988), Thomas Brolin (1992) The stat 19 – Sweden conceded 19 goals in their first four Olympics Men’s Football Tournament matches before they managed a win, a comprehensive 9-0 victory against Greece in 1920. 1 Like

PROFILE: NIGERIA Olympic Record Nigeria became the first African side to win the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in 1996 with their fabled ‘Dream Team’. A side that included Celestine Babayaro, Taribo West, Nwankwo Kanu, Jay Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh defied the odds in Athens, Georgia thanks to dramatic late winners; Kanu grabbed a golden goal in their semi-final against Brazil while Emmanuel Amuneke fired the decisive strike in the 90th minute of the gold medal match against Argentina. The Albiceleste would have their revenge in 2008 though, with a Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria-inspired side consigning the latest incarnation of the ‘Dream Team’ to silver in their sixth, and most recent, Olympics appearance. The Road to Rio The 1996 winners entered qualification for the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations at the final play-off stage, where they defeated Congo 2-1 over two legs, with Junior Ajayi grabbing both of the goals for ‘Dream Team VI’. In the tournament proper, they finished second in Group B on goal difference behind fellow Olympians Algeria, courtesy of an Ajayi-inspired victory against Mali and draws against Egypt and Les Verts. A single Etebo Oghenekaro strike saw off the finals hosts Senegal in the semi-final to book their tickets to Rio, and finished the tournament in style by defeating Algeria 2-1 in the final. Former stars Nwankwo Kanu, Jay Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh (1996), Victor Obinna, Peter Odemwingie and Victor Anichebe (2008). The stat 10 – No African side has won more Men’s Olympic Football Tournament games than Nigeria. Despite Egypt also winning ten matches, they have done so in 32 attempts to the Super Eagles’ 25. 9 Likes 3 Shares

This space is reserved to celebrate Dream Team's second victory. Nigeria failed Dream Team by not giving them the best of preparation. If they perform well at Rio, they'd have done themselves a great favour and not Nigeria. This is a golden opportunity for the players to sell themselves. Many of them might not have another privilege to play at the Olympics but Nigeria as a country will always have that opportunity. 3 Likes |

Oghenekaro Etebo netted four goals and Sadiq Umar was outstanding as late comers Nigeria edged past Japan 5-4 in a Rio Olympics Group B match in Manaus Friday morning. The opening match of this group had finished in a 2-2 draw between Sweden and Colombia and the Nigeria vs Japan clash was highlighted by an electric start with as many as four goals within as many minutes in the first 14 minutes of action. On Sunday in Manaus, Nigeria take on Sweden and Colombia battle Japan. cc: lalasticlala http://africanfootball.com/news/635727/Etebo-Sadiq-Umar-dazzle-as-Nigeria-win-9-goal-thriller

robosky02:though i didnt watch the sweden vs colombia match so i wont be able to analyse our chances against them, but with what the boys played against japan in spite of the difficulties i see us coming out with double wins against them and colombia to top our group at least to avoid Brazil in the next round assuming Brazil tops their group. with proper training and sound mind our boys will be better placed and psychologically fit to play our next matches with zeal and purpose. in naija i trust. the land is green 1 Like |

Siasia must fix leaky defence to keep out Swedish onslaught: African champions Nigeria go into their second group game at the Rio Olympics Sunday against European champions Sweden very much aware their defence cannot afford to gift goals like they did against Japan on opening day action. Sunday’s showdown between continental champions Nigeria and Sweden will kick off at 11 pm Nigerian time at the same Amazonia Arena in Manaus, where Dream Team VI let in four goals against Japan. But for the opportunism of four-goal hero Oghenekaro Etebo, Nigeria’s campaign could well have got off to a losing start. The central defence combo of William Troost-Ekong and Sincere Seth, better known as a right back, struggled to contain Japan on Friday as Stanley Amuzie, who gave away a penalty to further fuel growing doubts about his defensive capabilities. Tiredness caused by landing in Brazil barely six hours before kick-off has been given as excuse for the team’s disastrous defending. However, what cannot be argued is that the defence has missed Nath Boys FC of Lagos star Segun Oduduwa, who for all his rough edges was the heart and soul of the back-four from the inception of this team. There have been suggestions that South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi could well replace Rangers shot stopper Emmanuel Daniel for this fixture. Daniel was the man in goal when Denmark trounced the Nigeria U23s 6-3 in an invitational game in South Korea earlier this year. Incidentally, Sweden walloped their Scandinavian rivals Denmark 4-1 in the semi-final of last year’s UEFA U21 Championship on their way to be crowned European champions. Their strikers Mikael Ishak and Astrit Ajdarevic were on target in the 2-2 opening day draw with Colombia. Such is the quality of their attack that Valmir Berisha, who was top scorer at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup, was only a stoppage time sub. But as much as the Nigeria defence has struggled, their strike force has flourished even with leading scorer and new Al Ahly signing Junior Ajayi warming the bench for the entire Japan game. Etebo has caught the attention with his double brace and Roma youngster Sadiq Umar justified his surprise start with a goal, an assist and caused a penalty as well as put in a decent shift on a hot and humid night. Imoh Ezekiel, who has featured for top Belgian clubs Anderlecht and Standard Liege, will again be a factor with his dashes down the right wing. 1 Like
