It happens all the time, at every Olympics. The US basketball players, the tennis players and the high profile golf players get their own, superior accommodation. Usually it's a hotel but there aren't enough good quality hotels in Rio so they've had to charter a cruise ship hotel. I'm not sure how this constitutes showing off.

Nor do I can't blame them, the dorms provided are of a low standard.

We're not talking about social class nor stratification. The International Olympic Committee already knows that several of these sportsmen are millionaires before approving the Olympic village for use. It's a sports tournament and not some jamboree so all that's needed is the basics.
