This is why the Nigerian project as propelled by this government is resisted. The type of resistance bacteria, viruses and pathogens develop when they are coaxed by partial treatment, improper drug therapy. The administration had a lot of political capital to spend on difficult but progressive decisions but dithered with subsidies before caving im, now it is burning through its pockets with yet more meaningless subsidies. How can it justify subsidizing an 'event' when some of its participants haven't been paid their just wages. What is it telling God indirectly. |

This government is highly incompetent. Is this not another form of corruption to sell Scarce Forex to selected few below the prevailing market values. what if BDCs and black marketers Sponsor fake Hajj Pilgrims to buy dollars at that rate then turn back to sell at a very profitable margins. and moreso even legitimate pilgrims might start buying dollars at cheap rate to sell for profits. |

DropShot: So why did the Muslim pilgrims get better rates than the Christian pilgrims; even though forex scarcity is much worse now than it was then. Stop using name-calling to justify your bias. I have turned a blind eyes to the issues of subsidies for pilgrimages because we could afford it. Now, we cant. Simple It is people like you who are too obtuse to see it. Everything is not always about religion. |

Despite all this silly amount the nation invest in religious pilgrimage. Little or nothing has been shown as good dividends in that regard. Religious superiority claims is still prevalent, disregard for others and their belief is on the increase. So in the end, the nation is benefiting nothing from religious tourism. So will the government give me discount in dollars too, to enhance my trip to India in my quest for more powers? |

Apologies in advance to those that may be concerned and bothered with my post. But for me i think this is sentiment, cause I believe Christianity and Islam are not the only religion practised in Nigeria. why cant we just stay away from religion sentiments and face reality? Me! am getting tired of all these barbaric and inconclusive news we see and hear every day! Once again, apologies to those that think my write up is bullsh**t, just trying to share my thoughts to the supportive ones. |

I beg to disagree with Garba Shehu on his statement! I recall that about 41 items were banned from official forex window about 3 months ago simply because of scarcity of dollars. I recall fuel importation was deregulated around the same time due to forex scarcity. Around the period, notable foreign airlines threatened to abandon Nigerian route due to lack of forex to repatriate their profit. Just about the same period, manufacturers cried out for help to source forex to import critical raw materials to keep production going and save jobs. Indeed, about 3 months ago, students abroad could not access forex at official rates to pay school fees, to the extent that a parent broke into tears in a banking hall out of frustration!! To now hear that Mr President approved 197 for pilgrims around the same period cast a big doubt on our priority as a nation!!! No wonder foreign investment and forex inflows have remained elusive! Outsiders see us as a bunch of unserious people!! Garba Shehu should spin a more credible yarn or admit that the policy is terribly bad!!! 1 Like 1 Share |

igboboy3:To me, the Christians even got a better exchange rate than the Muslims. Reason? When it was approved for the Christians, the official exchange rate was 197/$ and 160/$ was approved for them. This, to me is a subsidy but when it was approved for the Muslims (about 3 months ago), the official rate was still 197/$ and the intending pilgrims had paid to the government through their respective state pilgrimage boards and the money was kept at the rate of 197/$ not 160/$ (no subsidy). This money was saved at the then official rate but in dollars. If you had $1000 in a domiciliary account about one yr ago, is it not the same $1000 u still have in that account today? So what is it? 1 Like |
