Our defensive play is more compact now. Some things have improved, but we need to:

Improve further the frequency with which we get the ball to the final third and inside the box.

We need to improve further on winning the ball in midfield.

Spend less time passing the ball around in our own half. We need to be more direct, and play more with pace and power. We have a striker who is an inbox King, so we have to get a lot of balls and crossings into the box. If it were a striker like Tevez, then we would have been fine playing far from the box while every races down at once at the opposition defence.

We wait for the season to start to see how it goes and how things work out. We have players with jumping power (Ibrahimovic, Bailly and Pogba), so we will be a threat from set plays and long balls while also doing better defending than last few seasons.
Pogba is here to balance that

Four Central midfielders

POGBA

HERRERA
.SCHNEIDERLIN

CARRICK. ...........though carrick should play less.

Anybody that wants to criticise the Pogba deal in isolation is just hating.

Stones that couldn't get ahead of Smalling and Cahill in the National team is about to be bought for 54m.

If you want to criticize pogba money and still make sense, then you have to criticise most the major transfers that have happened in recent times.

Both transfers are crazy. As with most of the transfers in the game.

I see formation with Smalling as RCB while Bailly as LCB. It makes no sense.

Smalling is more experienced and will be paying on the left side which is more difficult for both guys because they are right footed defenders. Moreover Smalling has played there before. And Mourinho did not play Bailly on the left side of central defence throughout the pre-season.

You are right. 1st choice partnership when everyone is fit would likely be Smalling on the left and Bailly on the right with possibly Blind and Jones as the respective subs.
I would also like us to try Schneiderlin and Pogba combination in midfield if we are going to go with a 2 man central midfield......the major problem is Schneiderlin's passing inconsistency. Likely Carrick and Fellaini will be the like for like replacements.
Herrera is the X factor, we have no one like him in midfield in terms of style......I don't know what Mourinho has in plan for him

Ok,so Pogba signed happy days but like Jose says he wants to win. So if he doesn't that means, he's failed. Even 2nd in the league will not be acceptable. That's my opinion.
Valid.

Man city did not foolishly let Stones go almost on a free transfer ONLY to now wanna sign him back for a World record fee.

Not hating, just saying.
I mean, they couldn't even include a buy back cause

It will still not work. Chamberlain and Wilshere will breeze past him with ease, in fact everyone will breeze past him easily as he is the most sluggish player in the EPL. It is also more difficult to win aerial duels in midfield than defence. He will be bullied off the ball in the middle of the park.

Blind will be backup to Smalling in the left side of our central defence, and then one of the backup to Luke Shaw in the left back. To me Blind best position is left back.
some guys here have forgotten he didn't impress in that position the fiset time around,
but playing a full season as a CB where he contested balls and marked bigger, faster striker may just have helped him out.
a few games as a DM again to see how far won't hurt.

So we got Pogba for £89m in total fees after all; better deal than I expected. What happened to those salty folks screaming £120m and £20m to Raiola his agent?

Herrera or Morgan; One of them needs to step up massively and claim a spot in midfield this season; our season might depend on it. If they fail to, then we'll surely have to bring in another high profile midfielder next season. Our midfield has always been a mess. Like I've continuously stated, the signing of a single midfielder (Pogba) won't solve all our issues in the middle but it's a very good start to what we wanna achieve.

You should ask if he hasn't returned to his sick bed already since he wasn't even on the bench this weekend.

Left to me, Young should be the 1st name on the sheet for clear out. Don't really know what he does here. Hoping rumours of him to Palace is true
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by GBR1(m): 2:06pm On Aug 09, 2016
The 4-4-2 was at the peak of it's popularity in the late 90s and the early beginning of this century but most top teams don't adapt it currently for obvious reasons. Mourinho himself pretty much ended it's use in England when he came along with his 4-3-3 then. But these days he prefers the 4-2-3-1 and there's a good chance we'll adapt that but I hope not.

With the exclusion of Rooney, we have more players suited to a midfield 3 and it's best fitted for Pogba, our record signing.

A younger Carrick would've been good enough in a midfield 2 or the deepest midfielder in this trio but the older one has lost most of his legs and that makes everything a little more complicated because of our current midfielders, only Carrick has the required skill set to sick back defensively and dictate play.

IIRC Jose has done without the use of that kind of midfielder in the past. His first Chelsea team had Essien, Lampard and Makelele who wasn't exactly known for dictating play. There was great synergy between them however which is lacking among our midfielders.

As some have stated earlier, United pretty much didn't use to play with such a midfielder in the past but then we hardly lacked steel in midfield.

I'm very curious to see what Mourinho will adapt eventually.

hard to believe really,

Pogba left for free! I repeat again he left for free after running down his contract. So how on earth do you expect a buy back clause to be included in the deal when there was actually no deal.

Next time troll with sense abeg.

No. Pogba's Mom isn't like Neymar's Dad grin

I saw a letter by Juventus which disclosed the details of the payment. They would eventually get about €72m after taxes and everything. Raiola must have taken his cut from that money for Juve to get so low.

he was paid 20% of the deal by Man United
This deal is good news for EPL as a whole cos I believe generally the level of football will be raised akin to the first coming of Mou when the EPL top 4 were performing exceptionally in Europe. Mou and Pep will make EPL great again.
The Pogba deal is a clear message to Europe from England by Man Utd.
