Everybody wants to be an engineer, The rest who doesn't want to be engineers want to be doctors. Engineering Faculties in universities all over Nigeria are churning out thousands of engineering graduates every year, Competition is tough even with a good result. They are thousands of engineers now working in banks . They are many underestimated courses out there that can give you a great job even outside the oil industry and your grades really don't matter much(Unless you want to be in the academic Field). Most of such courses are in the environmental faculty like Quantity surveying, Land surveying, Estate management, Urban and regional planning etc. Most people won't even think of studying this courses unless they are forced, but when they do they won't regret it. They are few professionals in these fields so competition isn't much even with lower grades. Not to say that what you study determine your success tho but if you don't have the zeal or capital to be entrepreneurs then some courses have a higher rate of employment. 1 Like 1 Share |

Well, I'm an engineering graduate but I'd have to agree with you on the inclusion there. Most of our Engineering graduates have abandoned site jobs for white collar jobs. Just like the accountants, they want to sit in front of the computer, inside fully airconditioned offices, while artisans takes over their field. It's quite sad and also disheartening is the fact that COREN and NSE aren't doing anything to help (like the medical bodies do). 3 Likes |

What you studied cannot make you, but what you make out of that which you studied will make you. By the way, money still remains a means to an end, its never an end itself. So, it baffles me that you indirectly pegged fulfillment to financial earning ability from one's occupation . . . too bad. Citing your analogy, I put it to you that the first step towards earning much/building wealth is, foremost through mastery of an art (become the best in whatever you find yourself studying/learning), then after that commercialize your service - once you can chose your team wisely, believe you me, you are as good as made. 6 Likes |

Accounting shouldn't be on the bro,you said some engineering students are fast changing their carriers like writing professional exams like ICAN,ACCA,ANAN and the rest that means the profession rocks and you're still contradicting yourself my mentioning accounting in your list |

simonjassy: The genesis of your problem. You just discredit the OP simply because you want to study geology, en it? Because I can't see any other reason why you think OP is wrong. At least not from you. Well, let's suppose you're not looking to work in oil company. So na where you want work? Water company? Better take advice and think twice. If you like the course, then, good riddance. But don't fault the OP. If na for job, then, leave Jehovah out of it and think of something else. Coming from an Engineer (I agree that Engineering is overrated). Check this post for some advice https://orjichidi./2014/01/13/g-p-must-not-fall/ |

It was not their fault....If the system was how it should be, those are great course and profession any parent would like their kids to go into... Underdeveloped country will always be one... where any one can venture into anything just to survive....where an engineer can be a bank manager... |

I still don't understand your reasons for them being over hyped. Is it because the pay isn't so fantastic by government standards? It's not always about money though. These courses all provide a platform for those who study it. E.g medicine is one of the professions that's very fluid. You can practice in any other country in the world if you so wish. You already have a platform here in Nigeria where you've been opportuned to study at little or no costs with no debts post graduate, you're able to see diverse cases, you're equally able to diagnose patients with limited resources here in Naija. It makes a lot of financial sense to study here in Naija, and go abroad for your post graduate training. What of engineering? Its equally a profession where they can practice anywhere, and their services are genuinely needed. Even accountancy provides a background to build on for those who decide to tow that line. All these courses you mentioned are not just for every tom dick and harry. You really have to be intelligent to study them. The requirements to study them are stringent. They are also professional courses. They are respected worldwide. IMO, when its about financial benefits, the accountants/financial analysts are the fat cats. Engineering has a lot of perks too, and even medicine provided you're a master in your field. 3 Likes 2 Shares |
