[b]Hmm,These days people no Longer chase their dreams we flow with Time. Thus, the major reasons why those courses are oversubscribed

Today,we forget the most sucessful people are the Ones who venture into what they Like.

Those Courses aren't Overhyped Infact No course is Inferior. The Problem is when most graduates of the course studied it not for Love But for how Lucrative it Is

Even a street tailor could be richer than a doctor. If he Loves his Job, Creativity would flow naturally and with creativity comes Patronage

In Essence,One should Look Inward and not Pretend a Particular course is one's dream course when Infact One is Actually flowing with the tide

I asked someone recently about her desired course and she almost immediately said Biz Admin.I could sense her response was Passionless. She clearly said it without a major Ambition, thats the main problem

We all wanna become Lawyers,Acc,engs, docs but not everyone gat the dream.do u get it.

If u have that Ambition,You shall suceed no matter what, cos the fire will keep on burning in U

In my opinion, the problem we have is because Nigeria not an industrialised Nation like Japan and Germany where engineers are highly in demand. if Nigeria finally industrialise maybe in the 25th century, we will not have a lot of sufficient man power then. OP forgot Architecture as a lucrative course. People studying it are very few and the architects are self-employed. they are highly in demand in the constructive industry.

Engineering well true but 4 CIVIL ENGINEERING it doesn't apply. It is a very rewarding field of engineering.

Well, I'm an engineering graduate but I'd have to agree with you on the inclusion there. Most of our Engineering graduates have abandoned site jobs for white collar jobs. Just like the accountants, they want to sit in front of the computer, inside fully airconditioned offices, while artisans takes over their field. It's quite sad and also disheartening is the fact that COREN and NSE aren't doing anything to help (like the medical bodies do).
Ur moniker speaks volume

The op is only being myopic IMO. The course has little to do with your success in life because it all depends on you. Most students fail to see the big picture and that's why they end up getting frustrated career wise.
It's true the Nigerian factor is not helping matters but the fact remains that people are doing well in all these courses you mentioned. For example, medical doctors are "wisening" up now and trooping out of the country to countries with better renumeration even within Africa. And btw, renumeration is not everything but fulfillment

Governorship elections cases in Tribunal to appeal to Federal court then to supreme courts are all SANS. So, a fresh graduate has never been hired for a governorship case in naija. Asssmasher compare the numbers of medical doctors working with fg, state and private hospitals to fiance graduates earning the bigger pay.

You ll see that no medical doctor ll be jobless.

And there pay is average in present day nigeria.

All doctor ll work and earn money to cater for their needs after graduation.

not surprised to see many comments supporting the OP
Medicine, Engineering, Law, Banking and Finance are all noble courses to read

when next you are ill- go to juju man since doctors are overrated
when you want a bridge built- fly at night since witches and wizards have overcome the need for construction
when next you have a police case- read the constitution you downloaded on your phone and argue your case
and if you ever have to make sense of taxation- consult your village chief

i fear for the future of some nigerian youths if they think like this OP
young people are trying to aspire to great things- this failed student is creating a topic to bash education and he even has some people liking and supporting him. undecided

OP- ever heard of STEM? I bet not. Countries are pouring monies to encourage more people into STEM and you are here talking failure.

how on earth can someone say-doctors, lawyers, engineers and bankers are overrated- when virtually everything on earth revolves around them.

I've stated substantial rationales to back up my assertions.

(1)LAW:-An enlightened mind shouldn't be oblivious to the level of esteem placed on this course. Most people who pick this course in jamb only do so because of the prestige and follow the bandwagon without having no modicum of sensitisation nor awareness what it holds for them ultimately in Future.Actually, law was a hot a couple of decades ago at least, Most of 'em after the whole six years rigor(law school inclusive) settle down for all these mushroom firms with a very meagre pay(Gani's,festus' firm and d likes).Even d coporate firms hardly pays what an ordinary med lab intern earns. To get recruited into these coporate firm is tantamount to a camel trying to fit in into a needle's eye, despite the level of connection.A thread was created a year ago by a lady who was having a second thought about her making a mistake studying law.She was only being outspoken and venting her frustration, that which most fresh law graduates pass through nowadays. Most of our law colleagues back then who felt they're on top of the world because they were studying law are either doing charge n bail, roaming about aimlessly around CAC offices, working in these firms for little or no pay or seeking affidavits here and there. It's actually a nice course, but without connection, you're as good as useless regardless of how excellent your grades are.

(2)Medicine:-Yh,Yh grin most people will be stunned seeing this "Ethically noble* course on the list. But the fact stands,it's overhyped. Why do you think most docs are doing USLME exams just to leave this country
More reason NMA is always going on strike every now and then, fighting for allowances and taking to the street with placards after all the 9+years rigor.Even the residency primaries exams are conducted just to fail 'em.That's why we hardly have consultants nowadays, that which is the acme of d career, even a junior executive trainee in KPMG earns well above a consultant.More than 80% of docs aren't specialist,a lot are just trivial medical officers who earn just like any other civil servant with little or insignificant difference.Only national, neuropsychiatric and FMCs pay quite well for docs, same can't be said for the ones in maternity centres, private hospitals and state hospitals(who are even affected by d inability of d state to pay their workers). It's a course where you stress more than you deserve. To d jambites out there, think twice before going for it,even as a consultant, which has a very slim chance of becoming, all these small boys and girls who are marketers,ET or EA in reputable private firms will earn well above you as an entry level graduate.Except for the prestige, it's not much of a big deal at all.I have a couple of them as friends who have abandoned the medical profession to do MBA hoping to switch to the finance sector.

(3)Engineering :- I've collectively consolidated all the engineering courses under this canopy. Most of 'em only wish to work in oil companies and nowhere more, but the question is,How many of these companies recruit?Even the multinational ones like haliburton and Schlumberger with syndicates here in Nigeria hardly put out any vacancies, they may not denounce any vacancy in a couple of years. Is it computer science which you don't even need to study to know more about it than the graduates themselves?Or mech engineer where our automobile industry is as good as useless?Or chemical engineer where how manufacturing industry would rather sought the services of foreign technicians to these LA cram LA pour stereotyped minds? And many more?Engineering and geology graduates constitute d greatest percentage of the graduates faced with unemployment

(4)Accounting:-Mtcheew,you don't even need to study this course to work as an accountant in any reputable firm.in this present age where a fine art undergraduate can apply for professional exams like:CPA,ICAN or ACCA.Even all these private firms would prefer someone with a MBA cert to a person with first degree IN accounting to his CV.Even with your first degree In accounting,You stand no chance of landing Nice jobs without having any professional cert,so what's the big deal?

(5)Banking and finance:-You don't need to study this course to work in a bank, even as a full staff. Anyone can work in a bank. Anybody with a professional cert stands a better chance of getting recruited as a full staff than someone with a banking and finance degree who might better still get a contract job or worst,no Job at all.

.....Engineering is exception anyway, though depending on the aspect of Engineering, because if you know what you are doing as an Engineer, you will always earn well, more over any course that have low skill or semi skill personnel or other discipline as close substitutes, may have more difficulty securing a job at lower level, but the higher you go in skill development and professionalism, the less competitive survival is. Most professional courses are ok because if not for anything else, certain areas are reserved for them by law or convention it's just that if you are not very useful in other areas except your discipline, it makes survival more difficult, like Law and medicine, you hardly see them being very useful in other areas except their field, and unfortunately their areas are no more enough for the available personnel hence their own unemployment and underemployment are worst. As for accounting, except you are chartered or favored, you may find it difficult to survive because accounting records done by freshers can be done by anybody if trained. But other specialized areas of accounting like taxation, auditing, reporting etc are strictly reserved for professional accountants and that's where the real money is. As for anybody writing and passing ICAN, well it is true, any field can write and pass but i am still very much surprised that our members in the whole Nigeria are still less than 40,000 dead and alive, retired and tired. As an ICAN member, you can be underemployed but being unemployed from Jan to Dec is a fat NO unless you wish to........they will always be small jobs to tidy around. PROUDLY Accountant, even in my next world if possible.

Don't quote me and talk non sense, if you are still a student unless you are working and studying, because una no de like hear the truth untill two weeks to pass out from NYSC.

Less I forget, all the courses in Nigeria are becoming useless as each day passes by, but you yourself will be much more useless if you depend wholely on your certificate or course for survival.....get a skill and be your own boss.

Please enlighten him about engineering.

It shows you don't get his argument. He is not claiming that these courses are not useful. He is just talking about their market value after graduation (which is the reason many people opt for it).

yeah!!! i sure get what the OP is putting up but when i started getting exposed and travelling out i had to change my view. Taking away the challenges in the medical sector which he clearly highlighted and which i believe is true, the issue of the society or country providing a soft landing after graduation in a country with a high CERTIFICATE rate is a surreal thinking and it is not only pertaining to our clime, the same issue is spelling out in US AND UK. I was so surprised that in the US so many people choose not to go to the university because of the debt to be incurred and the hold down time the debt would have on them.

A programme i went for in the UK i was so surprised when the head of Africa unit told us he was a trained lawyer who quit after 8 years to go into ICT. The head of a big oil company in Nigeria is a trained medical doctor.

Its a PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MIND IS OR SHOULD I SAY PUT YOUR HEAD WHERE YOUR MIND IS ''WORLD''.

YOUR FIRST DEGREE IS NOT MEANT TO DEFINE YOUR CAREER PATH... IT MAKES YOU MALLEABLE ACROSS ANY FIELD. EVEN THE LAW OR ACCOUNTING YOU STUDIED,WHEN YOU ARE DONE WITH SCHOOL YOU WOULD FIND OUT THAT YOU STILL HAVE TO SPECIALIZE IN AN ASPECT UNDER THAT.

AS YOU CAN SEE FROM MY EARLIER POST , I MADE EMPHASIS ON ENGINEERING. AS AN ENGINEER BE READY TO DO ANYTHING, TO SOLVE ANY PROBLEM, TO TAKE ANY CHALLENGE AND GET A RESULT...THAT IS ENGINEERING!!!!!

Petroleum Engineering should take the title as the most hyped Engineering courses.

If I have my way, it should be a post graduate course only. Any engineer (most especially Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical) can turn into a Petroleum engineer with just some few professional courses and hours on the rig and performs much better than a first degree Petroleum engineer

Op has the typical myopic and stereotyped view of these professions, if no one study the courses mentioned then our economy will cease to exist. You can hardly see an unemployed doctor, there is only underemployment In healthcare sector, I bet you no graduate of med, pharm, nursing, optometry, medlab will spend six months post Nysc without been employed..
Accounting is a vast profession form taxation to Audit to banking, a graduate of accounting that knows what he is doing should not have problem getting employment in fact shortage of accountant has made many institutions to employ graduates of other field with certification in Accounting (ACCA, ICAN, CFA etc )
I will agree with you to some extent with engineering because of lack of industrialization in the country, just open two standard engineering corporation in each state and you will be shocked that they will mop up the graduates roaming around but those that hit it in engineering hit it real big.. Lack of industries is the problem with engineering.
As per law, the simple demand and supply curve is taking its toll, universities are producing far more than the demand in the labour market, a professional course is meant to be strictly monitored both in admission and otherwise., that's why medical courses don't admit above quota given, to checkmate producing too much graduates when facilities to employ them are not there..and lawyers don't retire early, in fact the advanced ones are the desired for experience sake...
