7 Clever Ways Nigerians Are Battling Harsh Economy, Number Five Will Shock You by annnikky(f): 9:51am On Aug 11, 2016 |
– As the harsh economy bites harder Nigerians have adjusted feeding patterns, cut household expenses and luxuries – Some Nigerians have resorted to creating alternative means of income while others have simply turned to farming – But some citizens have gone spiritual because they feel that it is only God that can save Nigeria naira As a result of the harsh economic conditions that have engulfed the country in the last year, Nigerians have developed very clever methods of dealing with the current tough circumstances facing them in order to survive. According to a public opinion poll by NOIPolls which was released on Wednesday, August 10 and reported by PremiumTimes, Nigerians have been forced to be quite creative in their ways of tackling the tough economy. The report said, “From the poll results, 97 percent of the entire respondents acknowledged that these recent economic realities have had a negative effect of the general wellbeing of the average Nigerian. Consequently, this has led to the adoption of some measures and strategies to enable them cope or manage the impact of the current economic realities.” Here are some of the most popular survival methods Nigerians have been employing as discovered by the polls. 1:Cutting down on household expenses: The most popular method is to reduce household expenses. No need for two tins of milk when one can be managed and why buy fish or meat when popular cow leather ( ponmo ) is available and so on. 2: Cutting down on luxury items: Gone are the days when people buy things just to show off. According to the report, respondents said all the things that they don’t need do not get bought. 3: Enduring the situation: Probably the most uncreative method on this list belongs to those who are just enduring the situation by doing nothing other than hoping that things would definitely turn around someday. Those employing this method are the Nigerians that are very confident President Buhari will somehow solve all the economic problems in due time. 4: Adjusting feeding patterns of the family: The report showed that family feeding has been hit seriously. No more three-square meals. Either of breakfast, lunch or dinner has to go for the others to stay. Now families use 1-0-1, 1-1-0 or 0-1-1 pattern of feeding. Any red- blooded Nigerian understands this scary code. 5: 'Operation Call God’: Probably the most hilarious method of dealing with the economic crunch is the one in which Nigerians resort to calling on God to ‘come into the situation’. These set of people are tired of blaming past presidents or present leaders, they just want an end to the suffering super-quick. They believe that ‘only God can save Nigeria’ at this point. 6: Subsistence farming: Some Nigerians have resorted to the old method of farming to provide for their families. This way, they provide food for their families without having to spend on buying food items. 7: Creating alternative sources of income: To combat the harsh economic conditions, some Nigerians have resorted to creating alternative businesses to guarantee multiple streams of income. This way they can earn a little from here and there to make sizeable whole that can make them live comfortable in spite of the harsh conditions. According to PremiumTimes; quoting the NOIPolls report, the major economic challenges faced by Nigerians in recent times include huge increase in prices of goods and services (43 per cent); hike in petrol pump price (18 per cent); rise in the cost of transportation (10 per cent); devaluation of the Naira and foreign exchange crisis (8 per cent); poor electricity supply (7 per cent); irregular payment of salaries (4 percent); increase in electricity tariff (3 per cent). NAIJ.com recalls that outspoken APC Senator, Shehu Sani, said on Wednesday, August 8 that there is massive hunger and poverty in Nigeria. He stated this during the launch of his interactive forum tagged “Street Parliament” in Nasarawa, a suburb of Kaduna. “We know that Nigerians are facing hunger, no money for school fees and no jobs. But it is not our ( APC) fault. For the past 16 years. The PDP government did not do anything to you, but this present government will do something for your community,” he said. |
