PHARMACY: The Most Difficult And Lucrative Medical Course by Nobody: 12:37am On Aug 13, 2016 |
Pharmacy is a 5yr course+ 1yr internship+ 1yr Nysc. Any student who wishes to study pharmacy must first of all love chemistry!. And must be very good in phy maths bio. Pharmacy is a course dat has a whole faculty dedicated to it alone (faculty of pharmacy) and comprises of five branches and one unit; - Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy administration - Pharmaceutical chemistry - Pharmaceutics - Pharmacognosy - Pharmacology - Drug research and production unit To be a pharmacist, u must be able to cram. People often said that if u can study pharmacy, u can study medicine conveniently. The sole work of a pharmacist is to ensure proper dispensation and usage of drugs. Remember, only pharmacists are licensed to import, dispense and sell drugs. As a pharmacist, u have career options in (a). Community pharmacy 1. Ur license is being used by another personnel to get his/ her pharmacy store registered with grants ranging from 500K and above (depending on how big the company is). Why dat amount?. Because using ur license would result into you being the owner of the company and u are d one recognised by PCN as the owner and d risk bearer. You still have d opportunity to work in d same person's pharmacy company as d chief pharmacist or as a pharmacist in another pharmacy outlet wit a salary of 80K for a start, apart from d grant u were given 4 using ur license, and u can withdraw it after a yr depending on ur agreement. 2. U'll have a registered pharmacy store and u are a boss on ur own, provided u have the money (a). Industrial pharmacists 1. Pharmacists work as Medical Sales Representatives in National and multi- national pharmaceutical industries/ companies, where you are given a car, laptop (in some) with pay above 100K. The likes of Neimeth, Roche, Sandoz Norvatis, Emzor, Reckitt benckiser, Gsk and so on are top companies dat employ mainly Pharmacists. 2. Some work as research pharmacists, who are the brains behind the ingredients, testing and correct mixing of the drugs. 3. NAFDAC is majorly for pharmacists, wit some other health workers too, tho (c). Hospital pharmacy U work in the pharmacy section of an hospital Pharmacists deserve all dz pay because they worth it. They went through 'hell' in the Univ. not only them tho. Even medical students often have issues wit pharmacology, which is just one of d key areas of pharmacy. Above all, Pray!!!. Put God first in all things. This is not to discourage people in oda fields, all successful people aren't pharmacists. Every area of life has its own stress, toughness and MONEY too, since nobody came to dz life to suffer. Peace.. 43 Likes 4 Shares |

ogawisdom: This is not true. Pharmacists' roles are well defined. The only reason why we have patent medicine vendors in Nigeria is because Pharmacists are both acutely and chronically short in supply. Imagine in the history of Nigeria till now we have not produced up to 30,000 pharmacists. We should have roughly 20,000 Nigerian pharmacists at the moment, and significant percentage is in greener pastures abroad such as US, Canada, Australia, UK, etc. Even if we assume that we have no more than 5,000 Nigerian pharmacists abroad, that leaves us with about 15,000 pharmacists on ground to about 180,000,000 Nigerians. That gives a scary ratio of 1 pharmacist to 12,000 Nigerians. Since access to drugs is a basic need, the patent medicine system was developed to allow for access to medicine in all rural communities that are not economically viable for pharmacists to establish. Pharmacists roles are well defined, and their roles are not relative to the medical doctors. They have much broader functions than medical doctors and as such their roles are not confined to the hospital setting. In fact, they are right now least utilized in the Nigerian hospital system. Pharmacists are at the front of converting research (herbal, biotechnology, chemical) into pharmaceutical products, like you have at DRPUs, NIPRD etc. They develop dosage forms, working in industries such as Neimeth, Drugfield, etc. They work in regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC and in Customs. They work in community pharmacies, for cities that are big and lucky enough to have them, where they represent the first line of health professionals a large percentage of the city population sees for common ailments. This is because they are relatively easy to access and they have a vast knowledge of drugs to leverage on (actually, they are the expert on drugs and drug related matters). And it is because of this singular expertise that they are brought into hospitals to vet doctors' prescriptions and counsel patients on drug matters. Pharmacists are one of the very few professionals that are rarely jobless. It is not uncommon for a Nigerian pharmacist to have multiple jobs and sources of income, except those very docile and sedentary ones. It is in higher demand than nursing, medicine etc. However, it is one of the toughest courses to study and you need more than cramming: you need to be well-rounded in mathematical, chemical, biological, and legal aspects. 56 Likes 4 Shares |

Uyi168:The PharmD (Doctor of pharmacy) curriculum has more clinical content and requires six university years unlike the B.Pharm curriculum that requires five university years. PharmD students spend more time doing clinical posting at the hospitals, and so is most beneficial for pharmacists that will end up working in hospitals or in community pharmacies. Some countries, like UK, offer MPharm programme. Regardless of each country's specific designation, all of the graduates are pharmacists and have very similar course structure. PharmD has been approved by the NUC in Nigeria but at the moment, most Nigerian universities will continue running the BPharm programme for the next foreseeable future. 8 Likes 1 Share |

this thread got me One thing the op said that got to me "to study pharmacy you need to know how to CRAM" Mehn, this was one thing I didn't learn or realise on time Basically what a student of pharmacy needs are- 1)The zeal, and determination 2)Know his or her study or reading pattern, time etc 3)Know how to cram 4)good time management (pharmacy is one course that will take all your time from 8-4 or 5pm on a good day and leave you all tired, not forgetting all the many books to read...so stressful) but once you get the hang of it and understand the system...you are good to go 5)be a team player,be ready to learn even from your mates, listen and learn from your seniors. Etc @ op....their are no docile pharmacist or let me say few docile pharmacist... Just that our educational system doesn't give most students room to learn basic survival principles only theories.....it takes more than a 1st class degree or B.phar,Dpharm to survive in the real world... #thatz a fact Love your thread by the way sir AS MEN OF HONOUR, WE JOIN HANDS 26 Likes 1 Share |

lgboks: I still do not understand why anyone has to cram to study for a pharmacy degree. I immensely enjoyed my undergrad years as a pharmacy students, and yes I attended one of the most difficult faculties of pharmacy in Nigeria. Admittedly, majority of Nigerian students (be they Pharmacy students, Medical students, Yoruba, Business Admin students..etc) feel the need to cram to bag their respective degrees. That in itself is a failure of the educational system we run. And it is not limited to Pharmacy students. Students need to cram when the curriculum is lopsided in favour of didactic teaching to the detriment of exposure to real life situations. As a pharmacy student I found every bit of the experience fascinating, the microbiology, the biochemistry, the pharmacology, the pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, the pharmaceutics, the pharmacognosy, the forensics... I just wish our educators in the country would have the courage to make learning more exciting than it currently is. As men of honour, we join hands. 17 Likes 1 Share |

bizme: wow Lovely peice and nice way to prove a point...must say I feel touched by your words... Remember when I 1st started, cramming so not my style (wish I can say that now)...as am trying and still learning the hard way to cram These days our education system encourage crammers more....imagine a lecturer telling a student to give them back what they gave said students (thus cramming must be done) So much to say about that that I actually don't know where to start... Must say thanks for your response.....wish I can explain how it touched me As men of honour we join hands But for you I go hug you 3 Likes |

lgboks: As men of honour we hug then. I think the hug is a lot cooler than joining hands Believe me, I perfectly understand your frustration. We all went through it. I left pharmacy school with a large dose of disappointment; luckily I later had the opportunity to experience pharmacy education in other countries. That restored my love and passion. With time, it gets easier to live with, the unnecessary toughness of Nigerian pharmacy curriculum. 2 Likes |
