This is not true. Pharmacists' roles are well defined. The only reason why we have patent medicine vendors in Nigeria is because Pharmacists are both acutely and chronically short in supply. Imagine in the history of Nigeria till now we have not produced up to 30,000 pharmacists. We should have roughly 20,000 Nigerian pharmacists at the moment, and significant percentage is in greener pastures abroad such as US, Canada, Australia, UK, etc. Even if we assume that we have no more than 5,000 Nigerian pharmacists abroad, that leaves us with about 15,000 pharmacists on ground to about 180,000,000 Nigerians. That gives a scary ratio of 1 pharmacist to 12,000 Nigerians.

Since access to drugs is a basic need, the patent medicine system was developed to allow for access to medicine in all rural communities that are not economically viable for pharmacists to establish.

Pharmacists roles are well defined, and their roles are not relative to the medical doctors. They have much broader functions than medical doctors and as such their roles are not confined to the hospital setting. In fact, they are right now least utilized in the Nigerian hospital system. Pharmacists are at the front of converting research (herbal, biotechnology, chemical) into pharmaceutical products, like you have at DRPUs, NIPRD etc. They develop dosage forms, working in industries such as Neimeth, Drugfield, etc. They work in regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC and in Customs. They work in community pharmacies, for cities that are big and lucky enough to have them, where they represent the first line of health professionals a large percentage of the city population sees for common ailments. This is because they are relatively easy to access and they have a vast knowledge of drugs to leverage on (actually, they are the expert on drugs and drug related matters). And it is because of this singular expertise that they are brought into hospitals to vet doctors' prescriptions and counsel patients on drug matters.

Pharmacists are one of the very few professionals that are rarely jobless. It is not uncommon for a Nigerian pharmacist to have multiple jobs and sources of income, except those very docile and sedentary ones. It is in higher demand than nursing, medicine etc. However, it is one of the toughest courses to study and you need more than cramming: you need to be well-rounded in mathematical, chemical, biological, and legal aspects.

Believe me, I perfectly understand your frustration. We all went through it. I left pharmacy school with a large dose of disappointment; luckily I later had the opportunity to experience pharmacy education in other countries. That restored my love and passion.

With time, it gets easier to live with, the unnecessary toughness of Nigerian pharmacy curriculum.
thanks pharm
Can't wait for that part (experience pharmacy in another light)
Although am begining to enjoy the journey and can't wait to start practicing and learning the real practical aspect of the proffesion

With the way the pharmacy profession is, every single pharmacist is supposed to be multimillionaire. Unfortunately this is not so. And that emanates from the structure of the discipline. As a discipline, pharmacy has two sides: the professional aspect and the business aspect. Both work hand in hand. Most Nigerian pharmacists focus on a tiny part of the professional aspect which in most cases sees them counting tablets and doing no more. But when he/she attends to the business aspect and is willing to take risks, his/her professional training will fetch him a gold mine doing business.

I just love the profession.

I filled in for medicine in 2011, and for some reasons I did a change of course form to pharmacy. And up till now I think I've made a better career decision.

Even if I'm to come back to this life to study a science course, I'd choose pharmacy over medicine!

Why are we pegging pharmacy with cramming?!? IMO, pharmacy is just like any other course, with nothing particularly arduous. One thing is required in pharmacy (and with other courses): be consistent in studying, and surely you'd pass all your courses.

Loving every bit of pharmacy, while learning programing grin

As men of honour, we join hands.

Pharmacy is a 5yr course+ 1yr internship+ 1yr Nysc. Any student who wishes to study pharmacy must first of all love chemistry!. And must be very good in phy maths bio.
Pharmacy is a course dat has a whole faculty dedicated to it alone (faculty of pharmacy) and comprises of five branches and one unit;
- Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy administration
- Pharmaceutical chemistry
- Pharmaceutics
- Pharmacognosy
- Pharmacology
- Drug research and production unit

To be a pharmacist, u must be able to cram. People often said that if u can study pharmacy, u can study medicine conveniently.
The sole work of a pharmacist is to ensure proper dispensation and usage of drugs.
Remember, only pharmacists are licensed to import, dispense and sell drugs.
As a pharmacist, u have career options in
(a). Community pharmacy

1. Ur license is being used by another personnel to get his/ her pharmacy store registered with grants ranging from 500K and above (depending on how big the company is). Why dat amount?. Because using ur license would result into you being the owner of the company and u are d one recognised by PCN as the owner and d risk bearer.
You still have d opportunity to work in d same person's pharmacy company as d chief pharmacist or as a pharmacist in another pharmacy outlet wit a salary of 80K for a start, apart from d grant u were given 4 using ur license, and u can withdraw it after a yr depending on ur agreement.
2. U'll have a registered pharmacy store and u are a boss on ur own, provided u have the money

(a). Industrial pharmacists

1. Pharmacists work as Medical Sales Representatives in National and multi- national pharmaceutical industries/ companies, where you are given a car, laptop (in some) with pay above 100K.
The likes of Neimeth, Roche, Sandoz Norvatis, Emzor, Reckitt benckiser, Gsk and so on are top companies dat employ mainly Pharmacists.
2. Some work as research pharmacists, who are the brains behind the ingredients, testing and correct mixing of the drugs.
3. NAFDAC is majorly for pharmacists, wit some other health workers too, tho

(c). Hospital pharmacy

U work in the pharmacy section of an hospital

Pharmacists deserve all dz pay because they worth it. They went through 'hell' in the Univ. not only them tho. Even medical students often have issues wit pharmacology, which is just one of d key areas of pharmacy.

Above all, Pray!!!. Put God first in all things.

This is not to discourage people in oda fields, all successful people aren't pharmacists.

Every area of life has its own stress, toughness and MONEY too, since nobody came to dz life to suffer.

Peace..
Difficult? Do u guys write MBs /Pros. @OP running the MB;BS/BDS programme is more stressful than your 5yrs pharmacy. Pharmacy can be lucrative but saying it is Difficult.... I will query that fact?? . Hit like for some of us who are running the 6yrs programme.

liked. I'm running a 6yr pharmacy program sad

By the way pharmacy is not the hardest course, but believe me pharmacy program structure is 'stricter' than that of medicine.

There are some other courses that people study that I consider too intensive, coupled with the frustration from lecturers. I don't know how much to explain this but there are some courses that require much more than Pharm and med.
