I saw this report on SOFREP. The thing is Shabaab aren't significantly weaker as a group. yes, they've lost significant territories but they still control large swats of Somalia.

I will go to the battle of Bangui by BH standards that was SYMMETRIC WAR and S'Africa still lost quite a few of those Gecko , and yes Nigeria has lost equipment ( lots) to . When I see those pictures of those GECKO actually "towing" heavy equipment I see a bullet riddled Gecko with Multiple casualties the day the Air force does not show up on time,
In Nigeria with CAS intervention time is now 15 minutes however you are expected to fight on your own for a least an hour.
i do not pray to see the day S'A frican wake up to see that their " jeep" is obsolete but the fact is the next real asymmetric war they will fight will be it, then the enemy is not going to wait for you to load your equipment up and land decently at your DZ that to me is Static warfare so far S'AFRICA has been blessed in the DRC, I hope it stays that way.
Mr" D" like MR Henry said Nigeria has made do with what it had, let me tell to you one grim change they made :The OCKTAR apc does not seem to feature prominently any more in intensive fire fight before like the GECKO they were all over the place.

First, I would like to LOL at some humour you have.
However this is the case.....

In COIN, you deploy relevant equipment on the ground for direct fire.... However, the SF would still use their little Hornet for recon, because even insurgents don't magically appear from air to do raids on villages so it's the duty of the SF or Pathfinders to get them (and their Toyotas) before the rest of the military is called to action.

SF units are generally classified as indirect fire elements. So for SF units driving around in Hornet vehicles or Kawazaki motorbikes to be effective, they would need to be able to call in dedicated air assets at short notice. Sadly this isn't a capability that is available to most militaries in Africa. A 50 CAL and a 7.62mm won't cut it.


I do agree that convoys don't bust out of thin air, however you could say hypothetically they do if your AO is the size of Scotland or Belgium and the Netherlands combined.

As you said, SF don't conduct direct fire by first choice so all the machine guns mounted are for keeping the enemy busy in case their mission is comprised while applying escape-and-evade tactics.

However, how do you expect to mobilise an attack battalion (with your favourite 20mm guns) when you don't know where your enemy's base of operation? Recon is the solution and Hornets offer that ability as they're low signature vehicles (and quick to disappear on the scene when compromised) ..... again, insurgents don't hypothetical come from thin air even if you were the size of Russia.
