I found an exceptional deal to get the renowned Silverstone FT03-Mini(including a SFX 450W 80+Gold PSU and a slot-loading CD Drive) and will be downscaling from a full ATX case to a Mini-ITX case. The plan is to harvest the CPU, RAM and a case fan from my monster build and sell off the remaining components to raise funds to buy a Mini-ITX motherboard only. So watch this space! I like the Silverstone FT03-Mini for it's footprint and how the airflow is designed. Heat naturally rises; with the intake fan at the bottom of the case, it aids the natural movement of heat. The new case next to the old.

BUILD LOG - DAY 1 I prepared my work space. This is a 'ghetto' method here using a cardboard box to protect my desk from scratches while building. I proceeded by preparing the case (Silverstone FT-03 Mini) by removing the side panels and the external ports to get rid of loose wiring, then installed the I/O shield on the the case. Finally, I installed the M.2 SSD as that needs to be mounted behind the motherboard. I expect my processor to arrive tomorrow as I need that to carry on. 3 Likes

Build Log - Day 2 Processor arrived today .. but before throwing everything into the case I like to do a quick boot test by connecting the core components and testing if the system boots. This will save a lot of heart ache if something was wrong, you won't have to tear down the whole build. There's always that moment when I think, what if it doesn't boot. Glad it booted, I can now commence with installing the components in the case. Yea, I see it too..the 'ketchup and mustard' cables...my braided sleeves arrive tomorrow so it's all get customised. 2 Likes

I removed the Pro Gaming sticker on the motherboard PCH heatsink as I didn't like the red. It will mess up my color scheme of orange and black. I used a heat gun to remove the metal sticker and some isopropanol to soften the remain glue residue. The hoses that came with the original liquid cooler on the Fractal Design T12 were to long so I removed them and replaced them with fittings I already had. I had some clear tubing and thought I go for some orange coolant but decided to stick with black hoses instead...aww well...some mods for the future perhaps. Installed the liquid cooler and ran another boot test and it's all good Booted into Windows 10 with idle temps at 32C was expecting better but I think the water loop hasn't bled properly. 2 Likes

Absolutely pissed off at the moment, this power supply doesn't have zero-rpm mode so the fan is always on...returning it and picking up one up the Corsair SFX 450W instead. When PC is idling, I like silence. I'll never recommend the silverstone SFX 450...hell no! |
Re: Mini-ITX Gaming PC by bertoseve: 9:00pm On Aug 18, 2016 |
AKBliv010:Is it so much of an issue if the fans don't have zero-rpm mode? i think there are more salient properties to consider ,like efficiency maybe? |
Re: Mini-ITX Gaming PC by AKBliv010(m): 9:05pm On Aug 18, 2016 |
bertoseve:It's a preference for a mini-itx system that will be placed of a desk. For a larger sized system placed underneath the table, I won't mind. The Corsair just like the silverstone is an 80+ Gold PSU so they are both efficient. 1 Like |

I see, just like a laptop with really noisy fans, i know that feeling...at the threshold of an inspirational idea breakthrough, one needs absolute silence , which i prefer to describe as absolute peace 5 Likes |

yes!!! but on a serious note, quite a number of us who spend most of our time staring at screens either for work or fun get to that critical point from time to time. but sadly fewer of us know this, glad you are one of those who know this.. |

Build Log DAY 3 Picked up the Corsair SFX 450W...it's a teeny power supply too. Also received all the materials required for customising the cabling and after countless attempts to get it right, wasting 50% more pins for the GPU, I finally got the hang of it. Trust me, youtube video can't save you till you start..I learnt to do it my way and it works. Still learning so I expect it to improve. Sorry for the poor lighting...these energy saving bulbs get 'yellow' fever

I had some serious issues doing the cabling as I forgot to note down the pin numbers so ended up getting two pin outs wrong. With the help of my pals online got it sorted and now it works like a charm.

The TPM Module arrived today. This provides encryption for may data on a hardware level rather that software that can potentially have it's code hacked. This module enables bitlocker to be used, a must for my OS drive and Home folder..some important stuff in there. On the right is the old TPM module used on my Maximus Ranger 7

So I decided to try the EVGA GTX 750Ti Superclocked in my new build being a small form factor and I'm completely blown away. Now you see, Project Cars is a very demanding Racing Sim and the GTX750Ti (ok it's paired with an i7 processor) but this card was churning out 35FPS on Ultra setting..Maxed out. With some image quality tweaks it'll hit the golden 60FPS.... It also recorded and transcoded the video shown beating swagifted time on Laguna Seca 1 Share
