Some stories gets me thinking. How on earth could a large vessel as large as 4storey building be stolen /hijacked? 3 Likes |

Our vessel could have been a victim of this deadly pirate attack we were transiting to Usan from Onne port on Wednesday 17th. At about 1425hours just about 25minuites after we break convoy with the escort security vessels, our chief officer heard over the VHF of a pirates attack and the message was that at least 9persons has boarded a vessel and the crew of the vessel are rushing to the Citadel that they require immediate assistance. The vessel coordinate was given as which was about 11 Nautical Miles from us. The Chief Officer immediately alerted the Captain and he rushed to the bridge to take command. On arrival at the bridge while receiving the briefing from the Chief Officer he heard the message again and it was faint so he couldn't make out most of the traffic. Then another vessel ahead of us tried to re broadcast the message and was seeking for help from another field for intervention. At this time we confirmed it was not a drill. An internal alarm was raised for a real pirate situation and call for the engines to be increased to 1000RPM. We tried to contact all the security lines but was not going. We also altered our course towards Shell offshore terminal for possible security cover. Now as we were taking all these actions we sighted a fast boat moving from the direction of a drifting cargo ship towards the supply vessel that was trying to seek support for the distress vessel. We also saw another Supply Vessel close to the coordinate that was earlier given. Now all our focus was on the distant supply boat close to the coordinate until we saw the Speed boat close by, so we got even more worried and everyone was ready to head for our Citadel. After all other efforts to contact security failed we had to result to use of VHF. Luckily we succeeded in talking with the Security/Radar man on Usan FPSO. But the Coordinates was wrong, we started hearing the pirates talking in their local dialect (Ijaw) as to the success so far then we noticed that it was the Cargo ship that was under attack and they were having trouble gaining access based on their discussion on the small radio possibly hand held VHF. For over 2hours we were hearing the pirates talking on Radio because we were turning through and made an arc of less than 6NM from them as we slowly alter towards our destination. We also receive few messages on the Inmarsat EGC from France confirming the incident and advising vessels within the vicinity to be careful and also the actions they have taking so far and the incident happened at Lat. 03 54N Long. 007 09E Well I dunno how fast the Nigerian Navy rescued the hijacked vessel though but if it's true then kudos to them because I'm still recovering from the shock that we almost ran into them because those dudes are deadly Vectis Osprey is a general cargo ship not a merchant tanker and she left Onne port not Bonny Terminal and was making headway to Doula, Nigerian Journalist sha 39 Likes 4 Shares |
