Advice On Local Recipè For Dog Food by emeka2847: 1:55pm On Jul 31, 2016 |
I used to give Diamond, but it's now too expensive. I changed to Binggo to save cost, but I'm still doubting its quality in terms of value for money. Worse still, my GSD just littered nine, and I'm worried about cost of feeding as they start growing. Please can anyone share with me local recipe and step by step instruction on how to make NUTRITIOUS but CHEAP food to help my puppies grow well? Thank you in advance. 5 Likes 1 Share |

INGREDIENTS ▪️2 Parts Corn ▪️1 Part Soya Beans ▪️1 Part Groundnuts ▪️Fish (could be crayfish, fish waste, etc and as much as you can afford. You can do 1 part fish of your choice, don't just go overboard as too much protein isn't good). Roast the soya beans and groundnuts to remove the shaft. Then grind all together until very smooth. NB; grind the corn first before adding the other ingredients, as corn is the hardest of them. PROCEDURE FOR COOKING Into a pot of water on fire, pour some of the formula and stir (e.g 2 tin cups of milk into 1&1/2 glass cup of water). Keep stiring until you get a consistency like pap (Ogi). It takes a little while to get this consistency, so be patient. If it's too thick, you can add some water. For the wee pups, it's shouldn't be thick. For older dogs, you can serve thick. Add a little salt or seasoning when it's ready. You can also add palm oil if you so desire. Serve cool. NB; Your dogs won't readily eat it, as its new to them so start small when cooking. Here's a tip from a fellow nairalander @LordRegalia, if you're having trouble getting your dogs to eat something new, mix it with something they really like. In my case I mixed it with pedigree (rice & chicken). The trick is to have more quantity of what your dog likes with little of what you're introducing. Begin to reduce what it likes while adding more of the staple food - in this case the formula, until it's just the staple food they're consuming. If there's any part you're unclear about, let me know. Cheers! emeka2847: 14 Likes 4 Shares |

Mccarthyal:Pls. Interested in this recipe, since my dog whelped she's not gaining weight. Will this recipe help bulk up her weight cos I've been feeding her with diamond puppy kibbles 3 times daily and I'm only noticing little weight gain, what am I missing? Thanks 1 Like |

Hi, If you're having issues with your dam, you should consult a vet. The reason your dam is not gaining weight is because she's depleting her body's reserves at her own expense. This is why at this time, her meals should be highly nutritious. Feeding your dam with just kibbles will not meet up with her current requirements. She should be fed with highly nutritious and palatable meals to help recover nutrients and electrolytes lost during whelping, as well as help with lactation for the pups. The above formula might help in providing nutrients for your dam. However, you might want to augment it. I suggest you add chicken to it after preparing. The broth used to cook the chicken can also be added to it while preparing. Make sure to remove the bones from the chicken, so as to reduce the stress of having to crack the bones. Also, always make sure there's water in her whelping box to prevent dehydration. You can give her this three times daily while still giving her the kibbles. As I do not know the amount of litter, you should note that the larger the litter, the greater the nutrient requirements for milk production and consequently, the greater the portions served. Sources of fat are also very important for the overall wellbeing of the dam. In the formula described above, the groundnuts and fish have adequate amount of fats, but you might want to also give your dam whole eggs as eggs contain more than the normal requirement of fat in then. Your dam might reject some of these foods. So monitor her closely and find out what she likes. Also, do not over feed her. Giving her the right amount is just sufficient. To recap, introduce chicken bits to the formula. Add broth from the chicken while preparing the formula. Feed 3x daily. If you wish, you can give her kibbles once a day. Water should be readily available to prevent dehydration. Also, one whole egg per day. I hope this helps. Good luck with your Dam and her pups. Cheers! Namdeenero: 1 Like 1 Share |

Mccarthyal:Thanks for the reply, she had 8 pups and they are 5 weeks already. The vet said I should feed high quality dog food hence the diamond dry feed but truth is that the feed is causing her to have loose and smelly stool. I want to switch her to something more nutritious, bulk up her weight and at same time cause her to have firm stool |

Bros, I'm now on the practicals but a little confused. Kindly clarify: 1. Am I to roast the groundnut and soyabeans together or separately? 2. Is the formula going to be in for of paste or powder after grinding? Am I to add powder or paste to boiling water? Thank you for the support. Mccarthyal: |

emeka2847: 1.Roast it separately. The goal of roasting the Gnut is to make it very dry while that of the Soya is to remove the toxic peel. As for me, I remove the soya peel using water then I oven dry the combination of the beans and Nuts. Please, don't be tempted to buy Fishmeal, GroundNut cake and Soya meal from feedmills. The fish meal is artificially preserved while the oda 2 usually contain toxins and all the oils would have been squeezed out. For the GroundNut, u can buy KULI-KULI crumbs from the Hausa guys as substitute; it cost #400 per Bowl. However, there's no alternative for the fish waste and Soya(#300 and #170 per bowl respectively). 2. it's going to be in powdery form cos all the materials(Fish waste/crayfish, soya, Gnut, wheat/corn and indomie waste or broiler feed) must be dry else it'll get spoilt. It'll be grinded like yam flour. And to avoid using Maggi as spice when cooking it, buy some ginger and grind it too. 6 Likes |

Hi, Yes roast them separately as you'll need to remove the shaft from the groundnuts after roasting. 2. The after grinding, it should be in form on powder. You're to add the powder into a pot of water. Sorry for the late reply. emeka2847: |
Re: Advice On Local Recipè For Dog Food by fabulouskay(m): 8:29pm On Aug 24, 2016 |
I never remove the groundnut peel since Humans eat it... Also, maybe u should start small. Don't go buying large quantities for a start cos depending on your dog's age and how 'spoilt' it is, it might reject the food. I started introducing it to my dogs by first mixing it with their indomie before I gradually gave it solely to them. It's this same formula that is in 'mixed indomie'. Lastly, if u want to use maize, use the YELLOW and not the white one cos it contains better nutrients. But personally, I use wheat cos it's has more calorie and makes their stool firm(wheat meal) as against the watery one you get from maize(Pap). Though the price of wheat has doubled too #400 per Bowl while maize is cheaper 2 Likes |

Dear Mccarthyal and Fabulouskay, Brothers, I've been waiting for 48 hours to confirm before breaking the news here. They have been rushing it and I wanted to ascertain if their love for it would persist. Now they just clear it and leave my Binggo/Indomie combination behind. If I combine them, they just leak it off and leave the Binggo/Indomie. Wonders! The next prayer is to see changes in their appearance in a few weeks. But the acceptance is super, and they are all happier. I am grateful to you guys for being so open. All the business guys in the house refused to assist. If I had asked for puppy, they would have stormed the thread with phone numbers. Na so life be sha. fabulouskay: 9 Likes 2 Shares |

Sometimes I give my dog garri and ground nut. Since I lost my job in buhari economy I can't let d dog die. Sometimes d dog eat today he won't eat d next day, I skip one day. So it's one day on, one day off. |

I've been anonymously following this thread, thanks a lot guys. A friend of mine tried it and gave me some to give to my girl and she loves it(only food I didn't have to hand feed her with before she eats it on her own). I'm however a little worried about the calcium content. I supplement it with egg shells for now. Any suggestions? |
Re: Advice On Local Recipè For Dog Food by fabulouskay(m): 2:05pm On Aug 30, 2016 |
horlams: As for the calcium content, u can add 1kg bonemeal/Oyster shell to the nxt batch. But I never worry about it though since I give them bones to chew regularly. Eggshell is good but u av to dry it and grind it into powder else it'll go tru their GIT 'untouched'. 1 Like 1 Share |

Re: Advice On Local Recipè For Dog Food by fabulouskay(m): 2:37pm On Sep 02, 2016 |
welzyj2: IT DOESN'T GET SPOILT as long as u keep it in a 'cool, dry place and away from rodents'. I keep mine in covered buckets(to preserve the scent too). I once kept a batch for 8 months... 8 Likes |

Mccarthyal: my 7 weeks pup has refused this combo... i bought 1 bowl of yellow corn, smoked catfish crumb, and kuli kuli, grounded everything to powdered form.... initially, it will eat a little, but as of yesterday, it rejected it totally... It is too young to go on hunger strike, so i was pushed to shell out 11k on booster dry food. .. But negodu goldie, dont worry, i will keep it for you. I envy those of you your dogs enjoy it o... 3 Likes |
