The PharmD (Doctor of pharmacy) curriculum has more clinical content and requires six university years unlike the B.Pharm curriculum that requires five university years. PharmD students spend more time doing clinical posting at the hospitals, and so is most beneficial for pharmacists that will end up working in hospitals or in community pharmacies. Some countries, like UK, offer MPharm programme. Regardless of each country's specific designation, all of the graduates are pharmacists and have very similar course structure.
PharmD has been approved by the NUC in Nigeria but at the moment, most Nigerian universities will continue running the BPharm programme for the next foreseeable future.
Uniben offers PharmD

Ok. But pharmacy is a paramedical course na. I mean your topic.
Pharmacy is not a medical course and as the op has mentioned, pharmacy, unlike others, is not under any college of medicine.

Which one is mls?I hope it's not those guys who have to work under a pathologists? am not even sure if such a group are known by pharmacists let alone compete with them. Pharmacists don't even belong to any silly ranking competition in the hospital, they are the only health professionals that must not work in a hospital their whole lives.

Pharmacy is a nice course especially the clinically oriented one...........but I prefer Medicine
I respect pharmacists. Prescription is not easy. One of the easiest mistakes to make by medics. And kill your patient!

Pharmacology saturates medical exams, disproportionately, at least in most western countries.

Each time a pharmacist dispenses, there is risk of unknown allergy, etc.

A doctor prescribed me the wrong medicine and in overdose too. The pharmacist also surprisingly missed the outrageous dose. Luckily I spotted it only just before taking it.

The name of drug for just foot blisters alarmed me. And then the dose. A layman would most likely have taken it and never wake up. Both doctor and pharmacist tried to cover up the mistake. All that in an advanced medical system of the West.

Currently in the news that Maxwell, the 28 years old son of Stella Oduah has died of overdose given by a doctor in 9ja.
Pharmacy is a key healthcare profession.

So refreshing to see a thread about Pharmacists on the front page, kudos to the OP. As Men of Honour, we would always join hands for the good of our noble profession.

There will always be a never-ending debate between Pharmacy and the Medical disciplines, but the edge that Pharmacists have is the versatility of the profession. A Pharmacist is not restricted to working in the hospital, I wouldn't delve more into it since it has already been discussed on this thread.

The law in Nigeria is not working, hence chemist store in Nigeria makes money than pharmacy. Chemist don't need to pay all those huge pharmacy fees and pay a license pharmacy. I see all those small boys every where opening chemist and making it big,

Pharmacy o pharmacy....
Go to school, study pharmacy and Thank me Later.
Yes you are guranteed food on your table, weather you work or not at least nothing less than 500k is a sure banker in your account every year.
I dont think you can see a poor pharmacist. At least i know that a 400level pharmacy student alone can earn as much as 40k even as a student.

In this economy weather you like it or not, you will get drugs, (ohh its rainy) cold weather and pharmacists will cash out again.
Goto the hospital, at the end you end up in the pharmacy store.

So pharmacy is a very very very very lucrative course in Nigeria today with 100% ROI after your studies with a guranteed Job.

Unalaoted said so..

This is not true. Pharmacists' roles are well defined. The only reason why we have patent medicine vendors in Nigeria is because Pharmacists are both acutely and chronically short in supply. Imagine in the history of Nigeria till now we have not produced up to 30,000 pharmacists. We should have roughly 20,000 Nigerian pharmacists at the moment, and significant percentage is in greener pastures abroad such as US, Canada, Australia, UK, etc. Even if we assume that we have no more than 5,000 Nigerian pharmacists abroad, that leaves us with about 15,000 pharmacists on ground to about 180,000,000 Nigerians. That gives a scary ratio of 1 pharmacist to 12,000 Nigerians.

Since access to drugs is a basic need, the patent medicine system was developed to allow for access to medicine in all rural communities that are not economically viable for pharmacists to establish.

Pharmacists roles are well defined, and their roles are not relative to the medical doctors. They have much broader functions than medical doctors and as such their roles are not confined to the hospital setting. In fact, they are right now least utilized in the Nigerian hospital system. Pharmacists are at the front of converting research (herbal, biotechnology, chemical) into pharmaceutical products, like you have at DRPUs, NIPRD etc. They develop dosage forms, working in industries such as Neimeth, Drugfield, etc. They work in regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC and in Customs. They work in community pharmacies, for cities that are big and lucky enough to have them, where they represent the first line of health professionals a large percentage of the city population sees for common ailments. This is because they are relatively easy to access and they have a vast knowledge of drugs to leverage on (actually, they are the expert on drugs and drug related matters). And it is because of this singular expertise that they are brought into hospitals to vet doctors' prescriptions and counsel patients on drug matters.

Pharmacists are one of the very few professionals that are rarely jobless. It is not uncommon for a Nigerian pharmacist to have multiple jobs and sources of income, except those very docile and sedentary ones. It is in higher demand than nursing, medicine etc. However, it is one of the toughest courses to study and you need more than cramming: you need to be well-rounded in mathematical, chemical, biological, and legal aspects.
. Professor, I greet you Sir.

I still do not understand why anyone has to cram to study for a pharmacy degree. I immensely enjoyed my undergrad years as a pharmacy students, and yes I attended one of the most difficult faculties of pharmacy in Nigeria. Admittedly, majority of Nigerian students (be they Pharmacy students, Medical students, Yoruba, Business Admin students..etc) feel the need to cram to bag their respective degrees. That in itself is a failure of the educational system we run. And it is not limited to Pharmacy students. Students need to cram when the curriculum is lopsided in favour of didactic teaching to the detriment of exposure to real life situations. As a pharmacy student I found every bit of the experience fascinating, the microbiology, the biochemistry, the pharmacology, the pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, the pharmaceutics, the pharmacognosy, the forensics...
I just wish our educators in the country would have the courage to make learning more exciting than it currently is.

As men of honour, we join hands.

it appears you are a pharmacy student.. kindly drop your WhatsApp number, let me add you... I'm also an aspirant.
