Millerz:It's true that arguing with insults is a low way to go, but to be very honest, you were not making sense. Lagos is a megalopolis. More like a city of many cities. You do know that just like Enugu is a city within Enugu State, Lagos state has a city too named Lagos. And those are the parts that make up the islands. The only difference between it and the former is Lagos (the islands) is not the capital city of Lagos State, but Ikeja - another city. So it is definitely proper to pick just the islands and compare with Nairobi, Cairo and Johannesburg which all are within greater Provinces too in their respect. Now, Lagos Island is sure more developed, and still developing more than most African cities, except maybe Johannesburg. And even Johannesburg will be child's play when the Eko Atlantic, another city within Lagos State comes to completion. So in the real sense of it, Lagos is not only more cosmopolitan than Abuja, it's economy is more sizeable, and infrastructure more developed than the later. 4 Likes

OBAFEMIawolowo:Considering the condition you attached with your statement, then it's probably true. Enugu is serene, well laid out with good roads and less people. But Enugu's position would change dramatically if OPs criteria are put keenly in perspective. Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Ibadan and even Benin are generally more cosmopolitan and developed than Enugu. 2 Likes |

Puvour:port Harcourt and Ibadan doesn't have more infrastructure than Enugu, I don't know of kano cos I have not been there. Port Harcourt is actually a huge disappointment, though ibadan and port Harcourt may have better economy but Enugu has better infrastructure than those cities. Peoole would think port Harcourt has good road network cos of media hype, that city is actually disappointing 1 Like |

@ puvour I get what you're driving at but that logic is highly flawed. You cannot compare lagos islands alone to those aforementioned cities. Lagos is a state and its the entirey of Lagos that should be compared with Nairobi, Cairo and especially Johannesburg..Jo'burg has several cities and even Jo'burg is a city within the greater metropolitan area of Johannesburg; also Roodepoort, Germiston, Boksburg are all cities within the greater Johannesburg so it is pertinent that you make the comparison between Lagos state and the aforementioned cities and not just the islands alone. That being said, Eko Atlantic is still underway, not even 5% completed yet so let's save that discussion for the future Yes, Lagos is more cosmopolitan than Abuja but that's not even a criteria in discussing which is the better city. Standard of Living, Transportation/good road network, Security etc are all factors that should come into consideration here. But anyways, I'm done with this convo.. Bye 3 Likes |

Millerz:At least, while you excuse yourself out of this, you got my point half-way, so that's good to know. Even Soweto which used to be a city on its own is now part of greater Johannesburg. So we can be brave enough to go all the way by including those parts in our comparison to Lagos State, so that we get a clearer perspective of things. In that way, (Greater) Johannesburg would no longer be worth the hype and with Lagos contending very favorably. The Cosmopolitan nature of cities is indeed part of what makes a city better, so long as there is enough infrastructure to cater to it. And it's one of the indices for conceiving a developed, urban and diverse city. Abuja has a lot to attain to truly be compared with Lagos. 2 Likes |

OBAFEMIawolowo:Lol I actually have, but I wouldn't wanna argue much about Nigeria's second tier cities as there is generally little difference among them. Lagos and Abuja are the only two that are clearly more developed than the rest. Our will argument would just be fraught with differences in perspectives and maybe sentiments. |
Re: Lagos And Abuja, Which Is A Better City? by OBAFEMIawolowo: 11:18pm On Aug 28, 2016 |
Puvour:no sentiment, if you know Benin very well then you must know Christ chosen church of God with headquater along agbor road. Its a popular church in benin and thats my church. I go to benin atleazt twice a year for conferences. Enugu is far more developed than benin, sentiments apart, its so glaring and nothing to argue about there. As for port Harcourt, that city is a disappointment, its highly overhyped, though very economically viable. |

Having lived in Abuja,Lagos and currently London I have made observations of what all the cities are like and have made comparisons. Abuja is a great city of now and the future while Lagos is largely a has been. Although Lagos is an interesting place it's best days are behind it while Abuja is the place to be now and for the future. Below are the comparisons of the reasons why Abuja is better than Lagos. 1. Infrastructure Abuja's infrastructure (roads, drainage, building standard's,etc) is light years ahead of Lagos. This is because Abuja was and is being built to strict city planning standards handled by a few govt agencies . This makes a drive through Abuja a beautiful experience. Lagos on the other hand is a free for all due to corruption, poor planning and confusion caused by bogus traditional claims on land (omo nile). This means large swats of Lagos has poor roads, poor drainage, poor electricity and the regular building collapse. 2 .Security Abuja is the seat of govt as such security is paramount in the town. With regular patrols and activities by security agencies to protect lives and properties. Besides this Abuja isn't plagued with the incessant cases of armed robbery, burglary, kidnapping, ritual killing, agbero activities, cultists and traditional criminals used by local politicians that fill Lagos. In Abuja you can comfortably take a stroll at any time of the day. In Lagos some areas are no go at any time of the day. 3. Beauty. Besides the beautiful architecture and man made structures. Abuja is blessed with beautiful views and scenery. Large green land and picturesque landscape. With many hills and picnic spots and lakes. Lagos is blessed with beaches but due to greedy land grabbing practises, pollution and climate change some of these are not as nice as they were years ago. 4.Quality of life This is a no brainer. If you've ever lived in both locations you know Abuja beats Lagos hands down on this. Lagos is suffering from massive pollution levels and poor infrastructure making life here very stressful and frustrating. It's a common practice to start a journey to work many hours before your start time due to traffic congestion in Lagos. In Abuja most residents are able to reach their place of work within an hour or less and without the hassle of touts and criminal law enforcement people that plague Lagos. 5.Employment It's a statistical fact that Abuja is one of the fastest growing cities in Nigeria and a major one for the whole of Africa. Many companies are settling up base or are about to. This provides lots of employment opportunities for job seekers. Also all govt agencies have either their hq or wing in Abuja a fact most states can't boast of. 6. Peaceful Environment Abuja provide a peaceful, safe and serene environment to live, raise a family and work. Lagos on the other hand is the hassle and stress capital of Nigeria. You are most likely to live a longer healthier life in Abuja than Lagos which has many ill health causing factors. 7. Law and Order Abuja can not ever be compared to Lagos when it comes to Law and Order. Abuja is a civilised orderly city. Lagos on the other hand is a free for all with traditional chiefs, car park touts, agberos, omo nile, alayes etc all dispensing their own brand of wild west justice. It is not unheard of for omo nile to drive people away from their property on the instructions of a local kingpin. Something that is impossible in Abuja. 8. Business Opportunities As a fast growing city Abuja's population is expanding by the thousands every day. This provides opportunities for businesses to provide goods and services to the population including associated things like building and transport, feeding, etc. 9. No Tribalism or Ethnic Hostilities Abuja unlike Lagos is a safe haven for all Nigerians regardless of their tribes. Here people of all tribes and religions have held and hold important positions of public office and are able to own property and conducts their business unharrassed. Lagos on the other hand is known for tribal/ethnic hostilities. In Lagos your tribe is more important than competence to hold public office or do and own certain things. 10. Investment Haven All the points raised above lend themselves to the ultimate fact that Abuja is far better safer haven for investment than Lagos. You wouldn't need to worry about the many things you would worry about in Lagos. If for example you bought land and were in diaspora in Abuja your investment is safe in Lagos it's probably not with the traditional chiefs laying claim, multiple selling or the omo niles muscling you of your property. Abuja is a far better place than Lagos no questions asked. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

Millerz: first, you don't start to comment on someone elses post by calling it derogatory name. It is his opinion. You can state yours are and defend it. But to call other people's opinion derogatory names, is just not it. Btw, I think your idea of Lagos is an outdated one. It is absolutely true that the traffic in Lagos back in the days, was horrendous. But that's then, not now! I came into Lagos early this month on a wednesday morning and the junction at maryland (on top of the independence tunnel) was so free. I was surprised! I thought oh, it's was about 11o'clok and that's past rush hour, but the following day, coming from my house to through the same Maryland to Yaba, at about 8am, the traffic was also very easy! It use to take me on the average 2hrs to leave my house to Yaba via the same road but recently, it's taking me only about 45min! I was shock! And that's on a thursday! Off topic now, that muslim guy you quoted in another thread that said Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a girl when she had Jesus, was right. Pay attention to him. Anyway, that's off topic. |

Millerz: i think it is a general problem with overhyping a place/thing. Many Nigerians who go to Europe and elsewhere thinking money grow on trees, are often left hugely disappointed and disillusioned. I have friends who came into Lagos a few months ago for the first time, and are not disappointed. I also know quite a numbe of people who hate Laagos with passion. |

Krucifax: Agreed, I think the only points which are in favour of Lagos is that it has beaches. As a place to live it is Abuja every time unless you are in the music business in which case Lagos is preferred for now. Abuja is also still being built. I would never attempt to spend a month in Lagos alone but I did that with ease in Abuja and was able to walk about and get transport day and night and never felt unsafe. The people of Abuja have a much calmer temperament and even still say good morning and evening to strangers. Lagos will see you witness arguments and fights daily because everyone seems to be frustrated to an extent. 5 Likes |

Millerz: you made very good points about us being a few city state and its detriments. How i wish, we could move away from that approach to life. As for Lagos being lumped up together with the likes of Islamabad, Karachi, Kabul etc, that i strongly disagree with. These cities see daily bombings from terrorists, bombings that can only be rivaled by Boko Haram's activities in Maiduguri. I can bet you that alot of all the reasons, some people jumble up Lagos with those cities is because of stereotype, and stereotypes die hard! As for Nairobi, i don't know if you've been to Nairobi before; if not, our only info on Nairobi will be from the internet. Isn't Nairobi the city that houses the Kibera slum, remind me? A quick google search showed me that three top skylines in Africa and they are: Johanesbourg, Cairo and Lagos. Anyway, this isn't about Lagos and anyother city, but Lagos and Abuja. Let's keep it small. |

If you talk of Commercial hub, you need to take a trip to Lagos If you talk of opportunities, you can survive easily in Lagos than in Abuja. In Lagos your business has a higher chance of survival than in Abuja Security is not good any where but I have not yet heard of a bomb blasting in Lagos despite the rowdy environment In terms of beauty Abuja is better but Lagos is cool too. In Lagos you can easily adapt but in Abuja people are too laid back Infrastructure, Abuja is better but Lagos is okay If you want to retire or you are a civil servant choose Abuja but if you want to hustle then make it easier for yourself by moving to Lagos. In my view Lagos is better because it is a cosmopolitan city 2 Likes |

OBAFEMIawolowo: i've never been to Enugu, but i think Gombe is a more serene place than Lagos and Abuja. I know this will come as a shock to many of us here but the shock is not due to us having credible info about Gombe, but stereotype of the North. Yes, Gombe is neater than Abuja and Lagos. Some people will refer to AMAC as an evidence of Abuja's superior serenity. But that's just one area council! In Gombe, all the Local Gvt head quaters as well as the state capital are very very neat making them a neater place than Lagos and Abuja WHEN IT COMES TO MORE OF A STATE'S CITIZENS ENJOYING MORE SERENE ENVIRONMENT, I GIVE IT TO GOMBE STATE OVER ABUJA AND LAGOS. but like i said, this is between Lagos and Abuja and nowhere else. |
