Since he's owing you and he stole he owes you #600 so he can't use what he's owing you to pay you. Double negative added is still negative.

Now he paid #500 from the #600 then he has a balance of #100 to go but he took a change of #400 so hos total now is #500.

In the real sense he has only stolen #400 from you plus #100 he's owning
