Help Nairalanders, My Work Place Dilemma. by sheyguy: 3:24am On Sep 03, 2016 |
Goodmorning Nlders, I have a challenge concerning my 'former' work place which is a family business. It all started after I was employed in 2012 as an IT support staff. The HR in my work place started giving me strange new conditions like: me bringing a laptop as part of my tools to the work place(even when I knew I didn't need it), and having to employ my own means(stealing) to get privileged info like passwords and software administration tips from the colleague I met in the department. The strange new rules kept coming from the HR and then my departmental colleague in form of friendly charges and at this point I decided to protect myself by secretly recording(audio) what I could to avoid being denied in the event of a disaster(data or key equipment loss). The situation continued not without new challenges as I later got to realize that there was a clique among staffs (secret society type maintained by the business owners themselves;wife and husband). It got to a point where my colleague in department discovered the recordings, I suspect he combed through my phone while I charged it, and leaked it to his clique-the HR inclusive. This lead to me being targeted openly in the office and subsequently framed up and suspended indefinitely since some two years ago. The Situation Now As it stands now, they have secretly filed a termination of appointment letter into my file which I discovered by luck and when I asked for a copy of it through email they refused. I am considering taking up the case because: 1.) Before I was suspended the confrontation got serious and I have the particular staff who signed my letter of indefinite suspension on tape threatening to fill my file up so it will remain a stigma.I know their knowledge of this particular threat won't make them want to reveal the termination of appointment letter to me. 2.) They have no real case against me. In addition to this I replied the last query I was given and rightly denied the flimsy allegation I was framed up with. Should I just let them stain my record easily? I asked the last question because I know there is a 99.999% chance of them doctoring incriminating stuffs into my file if my appointment can be terminated and kept secret from me by them. From my findings and gauging of their mood around me after I was suspended, I strongly suspect they secretly hope I somehow come around one day and drop a resignation letter but I don't intend to go that way. I need the advice of NL in the house on what step to take. Should I lodge a complaint with the police, take them to court or write Labour institutions for support? |

NeededGist:Everything I recorded has been justified already. The same people conditioning me with various rules later tried denying it. Had my obedience to their strange rule resulted in a heavy damage of data or equipment, they would av equally denied me and I would be dry and alone. Alot more happened believe me I just tried reducing it to make the thread short. [MODIFIED] Seems my post is being misunderstood. I never said I want to continue working with them. They still av my last salary and various tools with them and have refused to return them but those can be forgotten willingly by me. My recordings were inspired by the weight of what I was being told on a weekly basis. They even boasted to me that I am not of the 'Family' so I don't have right to justice in that office on tape. I didn't and would never manipulate anyone into a coversation. They spoke freely and came to me to tell lies on their own accord. This isn't the first time such a scenario is playing out. In the past a girl was threatened and blackmailed by a senior staff and the girl recorded, leaked it and got justice. 6 Likes |

Intelligentdude:You should ask them that question also because to go through the phone of a colleaque is much more intrusive than the employee leaving his recorder on and close himself at random, I think. 1 Like |

So you made recordings of things going on in the office and you carelessly left your phone charging in the same office unpassworded. It's time to move on brother, It's been two years already. Get yourself another job in a work friendly environment, make friends with your colleagues, and remember to password your phone while charging in the office.. Lol GIVE YOUR SKIN A TREAT! I don't understand how people put their hands into fire and expect not to get burnt. The conditions of ur job is enough red flag. You just have to figure this out by urself, u best know the organization. 2 Likes |

OP.. I don't know if I am in the right position to tell you this because I've never had an office job that paid me beyond 20k. But one condition that still hasn't been met is the security of your job. Things are hard now so telling you to just quit is not so sensitive. But honestly, you really need to look elsewhere. Even the secret recording you have is 'criminal' because it was done without permission. And look at this: From the word 'go', you are being dogged with shady dealings. And even the authorities are shady too. The stress emanating from this job may be messing with your mind already, filling you with unhealthy paranoia. You really have to leave them, Man. Leave with whatever you have gathered and start elsewhere. It's not the end of life. I hope all their antics end in the office though because I smell a dangerous trend. I also smell my son's poo. Gotta go 13 Likes |

your case don reach dpo and commissioner level. You wont achieve greatness in bad work enviroment. Sometimes, i ask my self if we work only to eat or to grow. For you to still have something to do with this company after 2yrs of suspension is the height of hopelessness. Go grow yourself and leave family company alone, it usually does not work 4 Likes |

There are two things involved, it's either you quit honourably or be the juggernaut that breaks up that clique by snitching in extreme mode of its up to you and you. But I strongly recommend finding another job |
Re: Help Nairalanders, My Work Place Dilemma. by AfroKnight: 6:56am On Sep 04, 2016 |
Hmmm, hostile work environment. You need to start hunting for a new job. For someone working under such hostile circumstances, you were not vigilant enough. Your phones should be on your person whenever you leave your desk. You know you are not a favorite person there so don't give anyone leeway to snoop. Hopefully a new job will come your way. Best of luck. |
