frumentius: Sounds like quite the logistical feat! All flossies or some private Ilyushins? Are these other nations comfortable outsourcing their security to SASF in that manner? Have PPU stopped their continental hubris of recent years? Was an incident in Ivory Coast where they transported pretty much the entire local convoy and had an overt dress code: police BDUs, R5s, UMPs etc. Was really embarrassing to watch and I know the SASFB are a different breed, but incidents like that dent our image continentally. Awesome photos btw. On the CSIR pod I don't know anything further, just saw it on a regular local defence commentator's feed. You're gonna have to help us out! |

Seened:americans were still debating the ethics of allowing a drone to kill, but recently with several countries e.g russia, china, turkey, iran e.t.c rapid advancement on development of unmanned weaponry systems ,has forced the pentagon to increase its funding on development and research of autonomous systems.just recently countries didn't want to disclose that they were developing or had armed drones, today its the norm .i believe its just a matter of time before we see some of this systems on the battle field |

ViceAdmiral: Counter assault team is part of the VIP protections team. They there to act if the VIP is attacked. We have TRT (police cluster level emergancy). NIU (national), Task force (things really bad) and HAWKS have there own tactical team to. 1 Like |

ViceAdmiral: CAT belongs to the PPU. The STF and TRT differ in employment and training. The former is trained to deal with high risk situitions(Terror...ists, hostage etc). There's the NIU (National intervention unit) which supports the STF. Here's a simple analogy with regards to the military: STF = SF. NIU = Pathfinders. TRT = Paratroopers. When things get hot for the normal officers the TRT is called. 2 Likes |

MikeCZA: With good reason, for E&E. Prior to FIB deployment, we studied Ugandan, Zimbo, Namib, Angolan, Rwandese, Burundian, Sudanese and Chadian (don't ask me how we got them ) reports on their adventures in the DRC. A stand out for me was Lt. Enslin's E&E efforts when his Hawk was short down, and earned the Bronze Cross of Zimbabwe Medal for his tribulations. 21 at the time, and the 3rd Zim pilot to be shot down, the Rwandese shot him down at 1000 feet in his Hawk and he E&E'd for 5 days, because he didn't have the proper equipment. Through the jungle he maneuvered, and we in SA learned some lessons. Our Rooivalk pilots are accordingly equipped for lessons learned in earlier in Angola, Zim, insurgencies in the SADC region and the jungle warfare in the DRC. Enslin now works as a senior officer instructing the Saudi Air Force. For the Zim cousins: @ngaduh et al: does the famed Zim Air Force Jungle Dustbin Trophy continue? Last I heard, then Lt. Midnight, now OC commanding our 2nd Squadron won it when last we went up to your neck of the woods. P.S. For those who don't know what the "Dustbin Trophy" is: In 1976 an SA magazine carried an article about the Rhodesian Air Force (RhAF). It said that the RhAF Hunter pilots were "so good that they could hit a dustbin in a jungle clearing". Shortly afterwards a very tatty rusty dustbin arrived at 1 Sq RhAF, a mickey-taking gift from 4 Sq RhAF. The implied challenge was taken up and the bin was placed on the Kutanga gunnery range. Squadron Leader Rich Brand made one pass firing a quarter-second burst of 30mm cannon. The holed bin was galvanised and sent to RhAF HQ as proof. A picture of the bin found its way to the Royal Australian Air Force, Rhodesian Association. They returned a half size replica of the original bin, with the request that the then Prime Minister Ian Smith make a presentation. 1 Like

ViceAdmiral: Pah! You'll have noticed I'm no longer posting personal photos from OAs. Past photos for which I've been reprimanded are now fair go: the internet never forgets, and besides, the SANDF should at least thank us: those of us at least au fait with social media are holding the fort. 2 Likes

Still can't believe Henry did not select this pic from 4Recce: I suppose because it lacked a description and for some idi0ts with an inferiority complex, wasn't "African". Description: A helicopter lifts a seaborne operator from a boat whilst both are traveling at high speed. This tricky maneuver requires skill and coordination and allows transfer of personnel from one area of an operation to another with great efficiency. 2 Likes

jakeporeshenko: Beautiful, i love the upgrades done on NAF MI-17 Terminator helicopters. We are expecting 6 Terminator1SH helicopters, that's if that signed deal is still ongoing. Additional MI-17s and MI-35M helicopters can only mean good news for the Air Force. We just need those JF-17s in....... like now. 1 Like |
