Most people base their suggestions on general opinions. From experience of using both cars with regular and routine preventive maintenance, I would shockingly tell you that kia and hyundais are of equal if not better quality but definitely more reliable than toyotas and hondas. #experience lon soro.. 4 Likes |

I have read this thread sometimes back but I am here today to share my experience. I used an Honda Accord and Toyota Camry as Tokunbo cars as I was advised that it is better to buy Honda/Toyota even if they are Tokunbo than to buy brand new Kia/Hyundai cars. After a couple of issues with the tokunbo cars, I followed my heart and went for brand new Kia sportage in 2006. Today my first Sportage is 7 years, it has done 82,000 kilometers, with regular servicing, I haven't changed anything in the engine, I have only replaced the AC compressor, ball joints and some bushings in the arm. I bought another one for my wife in 2010 and that one has also done about 45,000 kilometers, the only thing we have changed in it was a bearing in the the back axle. I am not sure any other brand can do more than this. IMO, KIA/Hyundai cars are not inferior to T/H cars, they may even be superior. 6 Likes |

t2luv: Honda and Toyota cars that uses Timming Belt, can go close 100K miles before you need to change them. With both Kia and Hyundai you have 70K miles. Since both kia and Hyundai models uses DOHC (Dual Overhead Cam Engine) engines, if the timming belt happen to break this will lead to engine Cylinder head problem. Both Toyota, and Honda do not have the ths problem since their engines are MPFI (Multi Port Fuel Injector). If their timming belt happen to break, you do not have to worry about the engine needing to be replace. For my money, I take Toyota. Low cost of maintenance. An old thread, but... What are you talking about?? This is the very reason why lots of Nigeria used cars are often no-go areas. A timing belt has a replacement interval of 70,000 miles, and you feel it's too frequent? Please check the replacement intervals on a 2011 Kia / Hyundai Gamma 1.6 DOHC 16V engine, and check the same on a belt-driven Honda or Toyota engine, you'll find they're either the same, or approx. 10,000 miles apart. You would rather wait until the belt snaps, then you'll come whining that your engine's mashed up. Just so you know, 70,000 miles is way beyond 5 years worth of driving for the average motorist. Heck, some don't keep their cars that long. Yet, you begrudge replacing a timing belt once in 5 years? Lastly, there's no relationship between what you posted about DOHC and MPFI engines, and valves and pistons making contact, if a timing belt snaps in service. The two acronyms are worlds apart - one refers to the valve arrangement, camshafts and where the camshafts sit in relation to the crank. The other (MPFI) refers to the fuels system, with each cylinder having it's own injector. The valves and pistons WOULD make contact if the belt breaks in service, whether the engine is fed by a carburetor, SPFI or MPFI. The same would happen if the engine was SOHC. The only way contact would NOT occur, was if the engine is non-interference (freewheeling). This is where the piston crowns arwe so shaped, either dished, or flat-topped with recesses machined into them, to allow the valves room IF the timing belt breaks whilst the engine is in service. 5 Likes |

Kia cars are very reliable, we have owned a 2003 Kia optima since 2004, done 116000km so far, and it still drives fine. It is still driven to and fro work on a daily basis a distance of about 90km. Changed shaft once, hubs and bearings once, all shocks changed, never touched the engine for once, just regular servicing and liquid change, fuel pump changed once, all electronics are still working fine. Now if you ask me that's a reliable car by any standards for a 10 year old car. Yes, the parts are a bit more expensive than Toyota parts, but if u treat the car right it will serve you.Nobody in my house thought this KiA will go this far. I can and will definitely give Kia a try again Not ready presently at home would have posted pix of the car still very sharp for a 10 yr old Nigerian used car.. 1 Like |

Kia quality and designs have improved over the years. Their cars even look better than most Toyotas IMO. Check out the latest optima for example.. I also own a 2011 Corolla, so no one should come accuse me of bias |

Good day all, I have picked interest in Nissan products especially the Qashqai +2. Nissan motors in Nigeria are currently being sold by Stallion Nissan Nigeria Ltd. Now, I wish to know if the Nissan cars they sell are directly made in/imported from Japan, Europe or Nissan South Africa? I would imagine a direct Japanese production would be of higher quality/spec or grade? Would also appreciate any comment on these Nissan brand new cars especially the Qashqai relative to say its equivalent among the Koreans or all these South African Toyotas/Hondas. |

Elizadath: Toyota is Toyota and they are all the same. They use same tech. If you hate SA Toyota, then it means you hate Japan Toyota. Your problem is that you hate South Africa not Toyota. That's all. 2 Likes |

MIB1: Well all automobile makers have a streak for which they re known. In motor sports or otherwise Hyundai doesn't come close to Toyota, Toyota has seen it all. Indycar, NASCAR, F1 etc as far back as 1958. There is an Ibo saying that goes " if a child dare threw his father up, his testicle will blind him" Hyundai can't dare Toyota |
Re: Are Kia And Hyundai Cars As Reliable As Toyota Cars? by MIB1(m): 6:48pm On Sep 16, 2016 |
indigene: Same was said for Mercedes, Volkswagen, Peugeot ET Al a few decades ago. Toyota is 30 yrs older than Hyundai. Hyundai has caught up with Toyota in design, they are almost on par in the area of reliability, with time they will overtake. Toyota is only leaving on past glory. |

Eking: Heavens know that i would never buy a KIA product. I have my personal experience when i drove a friends Kia Rio 2015. Stability @120kp-140kph is poor. Braking system to Poor, unlike my corolla which has wonderful brakes. With this i have to start braking from afar. Poor body buildup. Underneath the radiator is seal with plastic, it broke onetime from a mild stone impact underneath. Most importantly Kia service center charges to outrageously. Would prefer hyundai to a Kia. Toyota above Hyundai and Kia... The only kia i may like so far is the Cerato 2010 |
