Why Are Most Nigerian Programmers Interested In Web Development? by zzzzy: 9:09am On Sep 14, 2016 |
I might be wrong though, but based on the people I know, most of them are interested in web development. Not that it's actually a bad idea, but i would like to know why. I hardly see developers who are interested in fields like machine learning/ai, computer security, computer vision, speech processing and stuff like that. I believe these are interesting fields, but why do most Nigerians go into the web. Ps: if you're a web developer, you could start by telling us why you love it. 1 Like |

That's what actually sells in Nigeria. How many companies need or would even award such other projects to Local developers? 3 Likes |

I too noticed it. Its web development everywhere you turn. I guess its where the money is technically here in Nigeria. The funny things is I have never really had any love or passion for web development. 1 Like |

I started out primarily as a software developer, after sweeping the streets of Lagos, with hungry wiring me mercilessly, I had to be more practically, so I rebranded myself as dhtml and things started working well for me. As a software programmer, you need to be employed by a firm, or you just need to have an application that sells. And to be honest, software piracy has killed us in naija, that too contributes to the problem. So the way out - web, but right now, I believe I am making more as a mobile application developer - that seems to be the main thing now. So you see, from software programmer, i migrated to web developer, and now mobile application developer. I move with the times. 12 Likes |

Because most companies in Nigeria believe anything Winform with backend database has only one swag and that it must come from India. The trend is, nigerians only know html and that's where our limitation ends. Shikena. |

But of course, the aim of programming as far as Nigeria is concerned is to "not go hungry" or "to keep a roof over your hard" which is a bit hard if you cannot fulfill common requests viz a viz websites (plus mobile apps). 1 Like |

Funny they don't even have the funds to pay ethical hackers to secure most of the apps, Nigeria is just like India nd Bangladesh in these areas. Like Web application is the only thing, and another annoying thing is, they don't believe a Nigerian can program, na to just carry our job go someplace like other African nations and be respected there. 1 Like |

zzzzy:You have to start from somewhere - web development. Take for instance, if I want to use machine learning/AI in my web app , I have to be a web developer and also have knowledge of machine learning. You can do almost anything with web development these days. You grow from one level to another. 1 Like |

WhyAmISoQuiet:true, but most Nigerians don't apply these, they just build a simple website with basic principles html, css, php, mysql and stuff like that, web apps are the future of the web, but most Nigerians aren't actually interested in these other fields, so applying all the other field in their web app would be a problem. |

We can't be compared to other countries programmers in area of productivity tools, health, vision. so we design applications that fits the kind of organizations we have. |

Currently web development seems be where the big bucks are and not only are Nigerians madly in rush for it also other countries like the US and Britain are also participants. Most Nigerian programmers you will find today have developed quality software apps and web apps but lack the capital to host them on Google play store or Microsoft stores because to do that will cost money. and paying isn't just once but to keep your app on the store will need renewal. |
