Actually its impossible to dig to the core because i learnt the deeper you go, the hotter the temperature by 25C per mile. Butits believe that if they dig to the core and continue, will definitely burst out somewhere.

Searching for the source, when i get it i will mention you.

Without the link I can understand you better now .I registered for an environmental course on edx . I learnt a lot about inside the earth .the course really made feel like going back to school to study geography .earth science is so interesting .

Explorer I want to disagree with your reply to a guy who is of the opinion that if one dig a distance more than the radius of the earth you can come out in another country or continent .

I have always known that digging deep down can only lead you to one place and that is the nucleus of the earth which temperature is almost that of the sun . If you can provide a proof to make me think different of my knowledge about the earth layers , I would appreciate .thanks
If there is any technology that can allow someone to dig to the nucleus (core) of the earth, then that technology must have considered and taken care of the extreme temperatures and gravity down there too.. And thus, nothing again can prevent the technology from digging across and past the core.

digging through is not even the biggest issue, it's handling the Core and the effects of it. There are possibilities of

1. molten magma(and it's even hotter ) coming out through the earth to th surface just like volcanos because of temperature difference.

2. low or no gravity at the core, meaning weightlessness problem.
3. the drilling through the core could cause Expansion (shift in Underground rock formations) indirectly cause quakes or plate shift etc

I remember watching a Hollywood film where people do transport from one place through the earth centre to another part o the earth. when getting o the centre weightless effect was added just too. can't remember the name of the movie

I did understand that the earth is round (Like a ball) So when we dig the earth to another country, are we going to pop up 4rm their sky?

I think its possible to arrive at another country or lacation, because the earth is spherical. If you pierce through a soft orange, you must arrive at another end, causing two opposite holes...The impossible feat is getting to the earth core, drilling through it and drilling past it. So many disasters would likely occur such as earthquake, leakage of molten lava, golden cremation of the diggers/machine and so on; I imagine its like cutting the earth into two.

If the earth is really spherical, then drilling and coming out somewhere else is possible.

The temperature, lava/molten magma are the major obstacles. Would have been a mega project embarked upon decades ago.

I always wonder what would happen if there was a hole from naija thru the crust n out the other side of the earth
I u fell thru this hole u surely wouldnt fall out thr other side cos gravity originates at the core
So what would happen

My theory is that u would spin uncontrollably when u get to the center and not be able to get out of the other side

Please my nairaland physicists n geographers what do u think

Well I think the assumption that there is gold at the Centre of the Earth is wrong. It's only composed of elements containing iron, nickel, Sulphur and the temperature is red hot that one can't imagine.

I'm sure if we can figure a way to get air and/or water down..we can gradually control the temperatures to suit our drilling

I think this would depend on the angle and direction of drilling

Like while drilling, they are making way for the molten magma to the surface?

You know all ds magma are confined deep down with great pressure, so drilling opens up cracks in the Subsurface giving the magma opportunity to rise up.

You would have heard of earthquake or land tremors in places like saki, Kaduna, bayelsa.... If drilling is not controlled, Nigeria should be expecting real earthquake anytime soon.

If you dig down if that is even possible, you'll find yourself flying in outer space.

If you walk on a straight line toward the end of the earth, you'll soon fall off into outer space.

Scientists stop confusing us that one will land in another country grin

watching one documentary someday about tiatonic plates *not sure of the spelling so pardon me*. One team of scientists went to an area they believed to be the place where the earth cores met and are continually moving, the place is in San Andreas there they dug the longest hole on earth according to them. Thing is the hole is just about 3in maximum so not much to cause trouble. Explorer you will do well do write a thread about earthquakes and tremors

tectonic plates....

Firstly, most planet were formed from the collisions in the giant disc-shaped cloud of material that also formed the Sun.
This also meant during the formation the earth, the high temperatures melted the precious minerals from the rocky crust, allowing for the minerals to solidify after it seeped down into the earth's mantle. This took with it the vast majority of the planet's precious metals – such as gold and platinum.

You mean if we dig through the centre of the earth 6738km X2, that we can actually burst in China? Does it mean the solid part of the earth is 'floating'?

Remember, this is an imaginary journey (not a real journey) as the temperature down the earth is too hot and can't allow physically going anything beyond 100 C.

However, to answe your question, yes, if you are able to withstand the high temperatures and keep digging, you'll come out at another country!.

This is because the earth is round like an orange- actually oval like a rugby ball. If you use a stick and pierce down through an orange, the stick would come out at another end. Its as simple as that.

u cant get to d core cos of high temperature. and d core is liquid so d mantle is actually floating on d core. ..

Lemme share my own little knowledge as a Geographer!!!

For the sake of people still thinking if it is possible or not, You will decide for yourself if it is possible or not after reading this.

First, you'd have to pass through 22-44 miles (35-70 kilometers) of continental crust (3-6 miles/5-10 kilometers on the ocean floor) followed by 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) of mantle. After that, you'd have to traverse a Mars-sized outer core of liquid iron churning as hot as the sun's surface (10,000 degrees F, or 5,500 degrees C), then a solid, moon-sized inner core, and, some studies suggest, a liquid innermost core.

Now for the sake of people thinking we can use it as a travelling means, probably to china or what ever, lol. Did you consider gravity? I guess you forgot that, now the question is, what happens to gravity?

We will first have to pretend the Earth is a cold, uniform, inert ball of rock. While we're at it, let's ignore air resistance.

At the Earth's surface, gravity pulls on us at 32 feet (9.8 meters) per second squared. That means that, for each second you fall, you speed up by 32 feet per second -- but only near Earth's surface. Gravity is a function of mass, and mass is a property of matter. On the surface, all of Earth's matter lies below your feet but, as you fall, more and more of it surrounds you, exerting its own gravity. These horizontal tugs counterbalance each other and cancel out, but the increasing proportion of mass above your head exerts a growing counterforce to the proportionately decreasing mass below, so your acceleration slows as you near the core. At the planet's center, your acceleration due to gravity is zero -- Earth's mass surrounds you, gravity cancels out and you are weightless

You're still moving at a heck of a clip, though, so don't expect to stop there. Halfway to the center, your speed hits 15,000 mph (24,000 kph); 21 minutes after jumping in, you blow past the center at 18,000 mph (29,000 kph). Another 21 minutes later, with gravity slowing you as you go, you reach the far side and stop briefly in midair. Unless someone catches you, you'll then head back the way you came and start all over again. In our idealized case, this will continue indefinitely, like a pendulum or a spring, in a process called harmonic motion

Of course, reality has a tendency to intrude on even the best thought experiments.

Geography is sweet na exam spoil am

We could go to Uranus instead. It rains diamonds in Saturn and Uranus and they have a better temperature . plus diamonds are more valuable than gold.

Thank me later wink

Getting there is the issue bro. Almost 7000km down, that's far more than flying from Lagos to London which will take a plane about 6hours. Now tell me the technology that can dig that, we've not talked about the temperature on the way down that's over 6000°C.

Its not possible.

To successfully journey through the earth core, an advanced machine that's capable of piercing through the core and at the same time, withstand the heat is needed. But what of the earth magma? That will even make the quest quite impossible but having seen a lot of impossibilities become possible, travelling to the earth core becomes also possible. Time will tell though.

That's possible, but i believe advanced machineries will handle that. I think the problem is the heat, if not they would have drilled to the core with advanced equipments. By the time they drill for 5 to 10years , they will get to the core.
Digging into the earth core cannot cause a crack due to for instance net gravitational force exerted on the planet from the sun and other planets. Think of it as a reason why ocean is still holding together despite been a hydrat liquid (technically). Under the ocean or around the core area, the amount of matter above the object is far far less than the amount of matter below the object so the upward pull of gravity is negligible. However, the reverse is the case on the surface of the Earth.
