After 2 weeks of prepping for the quantitative section, I took poweprep test 1 and scored 161, Barron gre simulator and scored 161 in test 1 and 158 in test 2 all in the quantitative section, i realised Barron questions are more complicated than gre Powerprep not cause the questions are difficult to solve but because the way the questions are asked a lot of times aren't clear, through this tests have seen my errors and how some particular types of questions are to be answered. I still have 1 month and 2 weeks of prep left, I really want much better quantitative scores and I still haven't started verbal prep. So far have used Barron, ets official guide, magoosh videos solving all questions at the end of each chapter in each book. How else can I improve this scores? what's the advised next move? I plan to apply for PhD Electrical Engineering direct from bsc and my aim is 166 Q, 150 v and 4 AWA |

Nice job! Are you part of the GRE Facebook group? Lots of veterans there. I met some Indians there who helped me improve my score. They post from disparate sources which helped me learn from different material in one place. Secondly, you want to try this site: kaomanfen.com. It does not get better than that for practice tests, maybe not as great as magoosh. I found out about this pretty late. If you make around 320 and have around 3.5/4 GPA, you can apply to K-state as a safe school. Education here is awesome, the engineering college is a place to be. Elect is just next to my department in the same complex. The funding is good and the research is renowned too. Enjoy the experience, share the experience with us and good luck! If you make between 315 and 325, it would be better if you tried schools like Oregon state, UTK, UCF too... Your CGPA is very good. 320 is not too high for a prospective PhD student. It is competitive, so you have to demonstrate competitiveness too. I added you to the Facebook group. Keep us posted. tblvck: |

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Nobody: 2:48am On Sep 19, 2016 |
tblvck:General inquiries are addressed to the grad program directors. Show interest in the professor research if that is what you have interest in. Go to quora and you will find different ways to approach prospective professors. You need to read their papers and critique them to have meaningful conversations with them. |

So far you keep learning. We all start somewhere. The GRE (Graduate Records Examinations) is an admissions exam (in Nigeria's academic parlance) for entry into US universities, primarily. As we take JAMB's UTME for admission into undergraduate universities in Naija, so also is GRE for admission into postgraduate schools in the US. Hope that clears things up a bit. |

As students are we utilising past questions to their full? Correct usage can actually boost our chances of passing. Jobbers practice GMAT past questions. Its all about Full UTILISATION. check http://genesisonlinetutorials..co.ke/2016/09/exam-tips-past-questions-benefits-of-hind-sight.html |

helenmi:You're not alone. Start with the official guide, and try to see their reasoning behind answering their own Verbal questions, especially on pages 496 - 526 for the 2nd edition. You'll get a feel of what thinking they want you to develop over time, as you prep for the test. Once you get used to that thinking, it would become second nature. Learning vocab is hyped, I think. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by happyday: 5:37am On Sep 19, 2016 |
jlakesideo: First off, congrats! If anything, I'm sure that the department thinks you're good on paper. It's time to make them determine how eligible you're for an admission slot in their program. First, how did you get the interview invite? Was it through a normal application, or you knew someone (a grad student, post-doc or faculty) who helped you 'press' the right buttons? If it's the latter, you might need to simply contact them to give you a heads-up on what to expect. Either way, you need not fret. Interviews like this is 2-way. They're trying to interview you, as much as you're trying to interview them! Firstly, be prepared for the interview. If you don't have a 2-way headset (microphone and earpiece), get one. If your internet connection is not optimal, find a place where you can be connected for the period of the interview. Ensure your PC's battery is fine enough to last you throughout the interview, even if PHCN comes knocking. Resist the temptation to dress anyhow. Dress as if you'll be attending an in-person interview. Test run the audio, video and internet connection. Test everything prior to the interview and make sure all is in order. Then, you'll need to be ready. Find out about your interviewers. How many are they? It doesn't hurt to ask prior to the interview. Most likely, your future advisor will be leading the team. Check his research page and really dig into his research interests. You'll need to show some enthusiasm about his research objectives. Otherwise, he might think you won't make a great addition to his lab. Which might be okay than for you spending the next 5 years on something you absolutely have no interest in. If you're applying with a BSc, be prepared to discuss your final year project, and look for ways to link it up with the faculty's research work. Ultimately, your answers should reflect that you've taken time out to know what the Prof is working on, and how you see yourself being a great Plus One in his lab. Don't get lost in the need to impress him/them. Tell him your doubts, be open and let him know you're looking forward to working with him, if truly he seems a cool person to work with. Prepare a few questions to ask, towards the end. It shows your level of initiative and motivation. Ask about the application process. If one document won't be coming through anytime soon, let him know. He might fight for you at the admissions committees. Again, if he thinks you're good enough. Which takes me to the last point. Blow your trumpet. Don't be reserved or 'humble'. Glance through the documents you've submitted to them, and make sure you can defend them very well at the interview. If all goes well, he might typical encourage you to apply. If you haven't done so already. I wish you the best. 4 Likes |

temi4fash:Your test is here already, and you'll need all the ginger you can muster to perform your best. Really, the perfect situation is to practice enough until you consistently get your dream scores in your practice tests, and then you go ahead to register for a test date. But, who says everything must be perfect before we take that leap of faith? Don't want to sound like anything, but you'll need to believe in yourself. You might not know it, but you've improved since you started your practice. Don't forget God still works, he will be of help. Just don't take this impression to the test center. It will sap out that energy out of you, real quick. Don't fret if you don't understand any vocab, ETS almost always test the words in context these days, and you might find those questions simpler than you expected. Passages are always annoying, so prepare for it. Get used to it. Plan to read it once, noting salient points as you go along. How fast can you get the big picture of any GRE-style passage? This will be key on test day. Come back and share your testimony, bro! 1 Like |

tblvck:Don't wait till you 'finish' Quant, before you start Verbal. Schedule both prep to go side by side. As for the Quant, take the practice test in the Official Guide, timed. Review your mistakes. Which topic gives you worries? Permutations? GRE-style Statistics? I'm sure there's a weakness consistently making you to drop around 10 points each time. I can't identify it, unless I see your worksheet. |
