Flashback: When The World Recognised Nigeria’s Economic Growth" By Clement Iro Fellow Nigerians, can you remember this photograph? In this handout image provided by NYSE Euronext, H.E. Ebele Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria rings the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on September 23, 2013 in New York City. September 23, 2013 | Getty Images. It was at the ceremony of “ringing the closing bell” of the New York Stock Exchange, a privilege usually granted the president of a country adjudged by the NYSE as having sound economic policies and growth. The person that performed that function in 2013 is our one and only President Goodluck Jonathan. It’s significant to note that in 2006 his loquacious predecessor, President Olusegun Obasanjo had lobbied the chief executive officer of of NYSE in Davo, Switzerland to ring the closing bell that year but was politely refused because Nigerian economy was still in the doldrums. As a result of the confidence of world economic analysts in the Nigerian economy under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Jonathan was REQUESTED to come and perform that prestigious ceremony in 2013. In all of Africa, only South Africa and Botswana had rung the bell individually before Nigeria. The others were Liberia, Mozambique, and Tanzania whose three presidents were lumped together to ring the bell and which most Africans saw as an insult on the continent. With all these endorsements, the All Progressives Congress, APC and their professional liars are still singing the song of Jonathan’s “mismanagement” of the economy and some gullible Nigerians are floating along with them. I’m anxiously waiting to see President Muhammadu Buhari and his group attain this or any similar level of international recognition in the management of our economy. With this “Julius Eke” type of story surrounding their 2016 budget your guess is as good as mine. ***Clement Iro is a social media commentator. Connect with him on Facebook. 2 Likes

Nigerians re too broke hence cut their purchasing power. I just wonder what the unemployed graduates 'll be facing now, Cos people that work 're really suffering. Na Yoruba I be. true son of the land. I hate APC and everything they stand for with just one exception. AMBODE. GOD punish them all. 3 Likes |

Standing5: Nigeria is borrowing about $8 billion to plug this year's budget deficit and last week, minister of national planning revealed plans for an additional $2 billion borrowing to boost the economy against recession. Please compare that with all that was borrowed by GEJ. 2 Likes |

Newyork Stock Exchange is one of the best stocks in the world. For GEJ to be accorded the honor to ring the bell shows the confidence they had in Nigeria's stock exchange, considering the fact that our own stocks was one of the best in term of return on investment in 2013. True GEJ's economic policies were recognized around the world. |

This recession has really receded the ability to think for many people, you think the foreign guys did not see the hollowness of our economy and the phantom, unsustainable growth? Pray what economic policies did the below put in place to qualify them for ringing a bell? However, there have also been many famous people from outside the world of business that have rung the bell. Athletes such as Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees and Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps, entertainers such as rapper Snoop Dogg and members of the band Kiss................ All the characters below even a dog, have also rung the bell, you can join them if you have someone to arrange it for for you

The only bells Buhari might get to ring is either a cowbell, a doorbell or CAC bell during his deliverance service. |
