He is England’s captain and record goalscorer, and stands just three goals shy of boasting the same double accomplishment with the country’s most successful and recognisable club. But right now Wayne Rooney is hurting Manchester United more than he is helping them, and it is time Jose Mourinho addressed the Red Devils’ problems by dropping his skipper.

The Portuguese marked his arrival at Old Trafford this summer by proclaiming that Rooney has no place at the heart of midfield, but in attempting to shoe-horn the 30-year-old into his attack Mourinho has helped to cause issues for himself which have seen United fall six points behind early pace-setters Manchester City in the Premier League with back-to-back defeats.

For many Rooney has been living on borrowed time for a period measured in years rather than months or weeks, but it was always unlikely that Mourinho would come in and immediately cast the captain aside. It is one type of statement to exclude Bastian Schweinsteiger from his plans without a ball being kicked but it would have been quite another to sideline Rooney until he had first given the player enough rope to hang himself.

And the United number 10 has done exactly that in recent weeks, with his performances in the league defeats to Manchester City and Watford of particular concern. Demonstrating a lack of sharpness and verve in the role behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he has forced the Swede to do more to create opportunities himself. Even when Mourinho slotted Rooney into a three-man midfield at Vicarage Road on Sunday, the skipper still looked entirely out of place.

The lack of pace in the final third this term has been reflective of Rooney’s own issues, and the paucity of chances being created says much about the allowances Mourinho has made for the England man. In a position in which United have multiple options thanks to the presence of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, they have carried Rooney and are so far paying the price.

Against City last week United were plainly second best during the first half, as conceded by Mourinho afterwards, but after the interval they had enough of the game to probe more significantly than they did. Perhaps if they had selected a No.10 who could provide a new angle to the attack they may have made the most of a City back-line which on occasion looked set to implode.

But with Rooney looking slow both on and off the ball, taking many a heavy first touch which squandered several chances to look up and supply a killer pass, United faltered. The same was true of the trip to Watford, and by the end he was busy taking his frustrations out on an assistant referee as his side were well beaten.

And for as long as Mourinho persists with Rooney rather than allowing the likes of Mata or Mkhitaryan to thrive in the greater freedom the No.10 role supplies, it can only damage United further. He may well leave the former Everton ace out once more against Northampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, but Saturday’s line-up against Leicester City will be telling in the least.
Rooney has been one of United's modern greats, but there is no use pretending he has been anything other than a hindrance in the forward line this term and his manager must act sooner rather than later.

Mourinho was brought in by United despite some scepticism in the boardroom, and partly as a response to Pep Guardiola’s appointment across the city. His record of succeeding with short-term assignments was vital in his attraction to the club's decision-makers.

But further ground lost to City could prove fatal in the Premier League title race this year, and Mourinho will never have a better opportunity to relegate Rooney to the sidelines without opposition and recrimination than he has following the last two defeats.

Now is the time for Mourinho to see just how effective United could be in the final third without Rooney.

Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Oasis007(m): 10:39am On Sep 20, 2016
Rooney, with erratic behaviour throughout his career, cannot be the team captain.

‘In fact, he should not even be a starter. Mourinho, as he has done at other clubs, aligned with the local star and wanted to become the only coach in more than five years able to squeeze juice out of a player who seems impossible to recover.

‘There are players that could be better alternatives (Martial, Rashford, Mata, Ander Herrera) but not all feel the confidence of Mourinho. And so it begins to erode the authority of the coach.’

‘It remains to see if the challenge of Manchester United has been too big to him, but meanwhile, Mourinho has a lot of work to do.

United shot between the posts four times against Feyenoord and two against Watford. Pogba, after being the best player in the game on his debut against Southampton, seems lost. His association with Fellaini makes United’s football rudimentary: against Watford the team created only seven times, the lowest number of the season. Defensively individual errors are costing them points.

At Chelsea, Mourinho failed to reverse the situation. At United he must show that he has not lost his magic touch.’

Above is the highlight of Josh Harrop.

Ignore his superb technique on the ball for once, take a look at his movement on the ball and when he's without it. He would get the ball in crowded areas with little option from his team-mates and in a flash, he already lost his 3-4 markers with either his quick turns or intelligent movement on the ball. He would some passes and simultaneously, he's already creating space with his movement for the return pass.

The main point is where there's no space, he kept creating the space and lot of time on the ball with either his movement (with or without the ball), incisive passes or his superb technique. That's the hallmark of every playmaker. Their spatial awareness and intelligence (with or without the ball) are just off the chart.

Take a look at where he was deployed as well, despite the fact that he was sometimes used on the wing in that clip, you can't but notice his playmaking attributes even when there were little options offered by his team-mates.

Compare that to a certain Pogba who's just dribbling upadan..

If there's 3 clubs that can win the league , it's Man city, Liverpool and Arsenal( cheesy )

Real talk tho...For a club of Man Utd's caliber we are seriously lacking in pace, WTF!

Liverpool would be top contenders of they don't get injuries but so far, just give the league to Man city and see you next season.

Did you think I was making my opinion on this clip? Forget the fact that I watch him vs City u21 team and he was the best player on the pitch, just look at the clip, that's no highlight reels of goals scored or just dribbling skills compared to the likes of Depay, Quaresma et al.

His movement and ability to create space where there's none is what I'm looking at. His intelligence both on the ball or without it are all over that clip.

Can you imagine? And people are on Fellainis neck whereas he is currently our best player. He has more accurate and forward passes than Pogba and Rooney so how is he limiting the team? If only we have two Fellaini in that team cry

The DM should have more forward passes than the CM. Then the CM more than the AM.

Nothing so interesting about that chart by SIRcumalot. Do you want Fellaini to pass back to DDG?

The full horror of Wayne Rooney's performance against Watford - in 13 ridiculously awful stats.

1. He took nine corners/free-kicks - but only created a chance for United with TWO of them.

2. He didn't create a single chance from open play.

3. He didn't play a single through ball.

4. He didn't 'take on' an opponent, so never actually went past a Watford player.

5. He didn't have a shot on target.

6. In fact, he only managed one shot OFF target.

7. He didn't make a single tackle. Not one!

8. He went up for three 'aerial duels' - and lost two of them.

9. In fact, his entire defensive contribution amounted to one interception, one block… and committing one foul.

11. He played 40 passes, completing 33 of them.

12. 27 of the 33 successful passes he played either went sideways (12) or backwards (15).

13. Which meant he only successfully passed the ball FORWARDS on six occasions. In 90 minutes. That is once every quarter of an hour.

Didn't you watch the match. It was Shaw who stopped running towards Zunga that allowed him a free shot. Even in your screenshot, between Shaw and Rooney who is closer to Zunga? Rooney was even playing number 10 and should have no business in this zone.

This kind biased analysis dey make me dey defend Rooney. Even these English press sef wey dey want make them drop Rooney for Liverpool players in national team.

We should stop expecting Paul Pogba to perform wonders and magic alone! He's surrounded by average Players in the Middle - Rooney and Fellaini precisely!

shocked

Rooney and Fellaini were not there against Feyenoord when Pogba had his worst day. He practically starved Rashford on the night.

Find another excuse for Pogba. Rooney was in that midfield when we won two matches in Wembley to win the FA cup. He was there playing like it was Scholes in action in our final matches last season. His fellow midfielders, Carrick and Fellaini were happy.

Shaw had an opponent behind him. If he moved to cover Zuniga, the opponent will move into the space left by Shaw whereas Rooney is still standing and watching.
The pass for the goal was even a cut back so had Rooney moved, he would have been in the best position to intercept.
Things like this are what Carrick does without breaking a sweat.

There were two players who went to help Shaw. It was two vs two without Shaw. Shaw's immediate concern should have been to stop the guy who was coming to score.

So if you are a player, someone wants to score, and you are closest, you say you stop to mark the one not handling you immediate danger?

Even without Rooney in our attack we will still look dumb. If we don't have midfielders that can skip past challenges and release the ball to an attacking player at the right time it will all be for nothing. If we don't have that AM that can skip past challenges and attempt through passes for strikers to run unto we are wasting our time.

I have to say, I'm not convinced dropping Rooney alone will be the solution to our attacking sluggishness. I think Jose still needs the right tactics as I'm not convinced we have a good enough number 10 in the squad to persist with the current formation. The current formation will not get the best from the team.

Every observant person knows Rooney isn't brilliant enough to play as a world class 10.
Mata for instance despite his shortcomings makes some dream passes Rooney can only dream of.

But it seems you guys have forgotten something.
Rooney was benched against Feynoord. And nothing special happened smiley

My prime candidate for the Number 10 role is Mhkitaryan, notwithstanding his role in his former club.

Pogba that bounces on the pitch like a ping-pong tossed casualy on a Woden board should step up his game? I've never seen a defensive/holding mildfielder waiting for the ball to get to him rather than going for the ball like I've seen in our £89mil asset. I've seen him shoot like 6 times, and all was balooned over the bar, except the Watford shot that rattled the woodwork.

Mourinho is also his cousin. Herrera who said Rooney is still very good is his cousin.

Rooney should be blamed for Pogba's poor outing so far even though Rooney was not against Feyenoord? And now it pains you that someone is able to identity the fact that Pogba flopped without Fellaini and Rooney - the usual scapegoats.

So far, Pogba is a flop. At least Rooney has been better than Pogba.

Lol!

I'm not even bothered by his shots in the clip. As a matter of fact, he's improved in that area.

What impresses me most is his movement and awareness both on the ball and off it. He constantly made the right runs on the ball which makes him lose 3-4 players at a glance and his awareness are top notch.

You can see the difference in his play whenever he don the no 10 shirt which means he's playing in the centre, compared to his wing play in his no 11 shirt.
