Pls mama in the house what is wrong with eating plantain or banana. Some people said i should stop eating them. that causes one thing like dat for d baby (in the middle of his head) How true is it.even unripe plantain too. But have not heard of it until today.

Yeah. It's compulsory. But I've been hearing lots of cases of some newborns being discharged (especially back home) without blood typing them and testing for jaundice. Like coldfeet said, jaundice while it is relatively easy to manage can turn fatal in a blink of an eye and cause kernicterus

Significant problems with ABO incompatibility occur mostly with babies whose mothers have O blood type and where the baby is either A or B blood type. Premature babies are much more likely to experience severe problems from ABO incompatibility, while healthy full term babies are generally only mildly effected. Unlike haemolytic disease that can result in subsequent babies when a mother has a negative blood group, ABO incompatibility can occur in first-born babies and does not become more severe in further pregnancies.

To help you understand ABO incompatibility, it is helpful to review the different blood groups. The genes you inherit from your parents determine your blood group. There are four blood types; A, B, AB and O. Each blood type has its own individual collection of chemicals on the blood cell surface known as antigens, so type A has the A antigen, B has the B antigen, AB has both antigens and O contains no antigen. If different blood types mix, an immune response occurs and the person will produce antibodies to attack the foreign blood antigen.

During pregnancy the mother’s and baby’s blood generally do not mix. The mothers and babies circulation is kept separate by the placental membrane. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, certain drugs and some viruses can pass through the placental membrane. However, some circumstances can cause the two blood types to mix, such as miscarriage, trauma and birth, and sometimes they may mix for reasons unknown. Antibodies against the foreign blood types A and B may be formed. These antibodies could then pass across the placental membrane into the baby’s circulation and may result in the destruction of some of the baby’s red blood cells. This destruction of red cells causes an increase in the production of bilirubin – a waste product.

If too much bilirubin is produced, it can overwhelm the baby’s normal waste elimination processes and lead to jaundice.
Jaundice is caused by bilirubin, a yellow pigment that gives the newborn's skin and whites of the eyes a yellow appearance. The baby’s colour is observed during regular newborn examinations by a midwife or doctor. The baby may need blood tests to check the level of bilirubin if the baby looks significantly jaundiced. Slight jaundice is very common in newborns and requires no follow up. Babies with high levels of bilirubin in their blood will require phototherapy and in severe cases they may need an exchange blood transfusion.

For babies effected by ABO incompatibility, anaemia may become an issue after a few weeks. The anaemia is caused by the faster than normal breakdown of the baby’s red blood cells caused by the mother’s antibodies. These antibodies can linger in the baby’s circulation for weeks after birth. Because of this, some babies will need to have blood tests to check the level of anaemia.

Routine blood screening tests in pregnancy do not screen for ABO incompatibility. Testing in pregnancy is not recommended as antibody levels do not correlate well to actual ABO haemolytic disease in the baby. There are no preventative measures that can be taken.

After birth there are two options for testing for ABO incompatibility:
The cord blood of all babies whose mothers have an O blood group and the father either type A or B blood is tested The theory behind this approach is that if the baby is type A or B and they test positive in direct antiglobulin tests (DAT), the baby can then be followed closely for jaundice.
The alternate approach is to screen any baby who becomes significantly jaundiced (particularly within the first 24 hours).

Has she missed her period yet? Very possible to start exhibiting Pregnancy symptoms that early as every woman is different. However it could also be a sign of pms- pre-menstrual syndrome? Put your mind at ease and go to a pharmacy and get 50 naira test strip or to a laboratory for a blood pregnancy test. Try not to do any thing nasty bro.

You can try walking about or up and down a stairway. Hopefully there wont be a need for inducement and if the need arises just embrace it and hope for the best.

Unripe plantain is a good source of iron which your body and baby need right now......That story about banana and plantain and baby's head is VERY VERY FALSE

The "soft hole or space" often erroneously believed to be an abnormality is A NORMAL PART of the baby's head. It is called ANTERIOR FONTANELLE (AF)

Asking you not to move about is wrong! Because movement works with gravity to push your baby down! And staying still won't do you any good. However since they have asked you not (and still gave you an ultimatum smh) you can try nipple stimulation! Twirl you fingers around your nipples it will release oxytocin. If your DH is close by ask him to cuddle you(if you are in a private ward) kisses and fonndling(if you are up to it) could give you orgasm that will REALLY help move things along. However if you choose not to do anything it's very likely that labor will commence in the next t 24-48 hours! Hope your fluid wasn't coloured but clear? To rule out if your lo has done the number two in there. Relax you will have you baby with you soon.

Pegge, I feel your pain sincerely and reading your write up made me remember what I went through on April 21, 2016. I was hurt, angry and I just hated life. Rhema Ozioma was a very active baby till the moment she was to be born. Pegge, I wonder why a Dr would allow u labour for days as a FTM. its crazy, very very. I never experienced labour pain in fact I dont know how it feels like just contractions. So no one could have blamed it on prolonged labour. The health system of Nigeria is so poor that a Dr will carelessly allow a baby die and still get away with it. My husband was so devastated and he cried like a baby as we had already become fond of our daughter. Pegge, the only way I could grieve was tell God how unhappy I was, I confessed my annoyance to Him. I wanted to ask questions but held myself. Worst of all, I had to get sutured again cos the first loosened. The pain was double, I wept. My breast engorged, but no one to suck them. As the days went by, I found reasons to be happy again. She looked exactly like me, weighed 3.6 kg, a long baby people said as I had her pics in my phone to always stir at. Pegge, its painful very very very painful. Cry pls cry but remember tomorrow will be brighter. Pregnant again and expecting my bundle of joy in March.

My heart bleeds reading this @peggygee. The Lord will surely give you strength through this period, you will laugh again. I pray double for your loss. BigHugs.
