In fact Barca's team is chocka with their academy products who actually had to leave and go and learn the trade elsewhere before coming back. For a team that habours title ambitions like us, any youngster has to either be worldclass or show potential that they can be world class.

This is the mentality at feeder clubs like Ajax and Southampto where the players are being groomed for sale. These slots do not exist at big clubs. They exist at lower level clubs and feeder clubs. If you can think of a club that consistently challenges for honours and regularly promotes from within in the manner that you've mentioned, please name them. Even Arsenal has severely restricted their youth conveyor belt.

This, in reality, is how it works. Because the whole concept of youth is that instead of wasting £20m on Baba Rahman, you can play Nathan Ake or Jay Da Silva for free without significantly weakening the team by declining to pursue that deal. That you can have Nathaniel Chalobah in the team, doing a job with few appearances here and there, and save 80k per week for a few years on Mikel.

This is the essence of youth and this is the reality. And the concept is not limited to feeder teams. Once in 10 years, we'll probably be blessed with a Zidane or an Iniesta. But that's not the essence. Most times, you get the odd youth who plays for 3, 4 years. Saves the club money from making stoopid purchases. These players eventually get pushed out by competition and the need to bring in a better player.



Regarding the slots for the young players - oh yes they already exist. Look up the laws regulation govering HG players. While it isn't cast in stone that they have to be from the Academy, it does not make financial sense for clubs to fill these slots with purchased players. The difference here is that we don't just give game time to those players.
