We're not like the Americans....no budget to have dedicated skills for each project. Usually a mix and match. If a specific skill is lacking in-house, can always give CSIR (for example) a call. Or perhaps a university or 2.
CSIR is the heart of SA's defence industry.

Almost every weapon system developed or in production in SA can trace it's roots to CSIR. From missiles, ECM, Radars, vehicles even the Rooivalk.

But stealth tech is something else not taught anywhere. Just hoping we didn't lose the chaps who started in this field.

Another one of Denel's projects that the public forget about. Marlin family of missiles....80-100km range.
Hopefully with the new government in Brazil funds will be invested into this project.

Maybe a new ground based launcher will be developed. Meaning Denel can go back to designing boosters attached at the "back end" of the missile not around the body like the Umkhonto SAM.

With the number of CAS assets the Nigerian Air Force is due to receive, i just have this feeling we won't get more than 18 units of JF-17 (one Squadroun), which is practical. Only Chad with 3 units of old model MIG-29s poses any sort of a threat. This would be bad, for an enthusiast! I hope we get atleast 24 units.

As expected, the JF-17s are going to be configured for a strike role, with a secondary Air defence role.
It is hard to read the Tea leaves and sometimes the body language of the CAS however having what has been observed lately is the success of / dependence on ISR ASSETS.
The last two highly successful raids by the NAF can be argued as what the Brass of the NAF believes is the way forward.
1. Expect more drones armed and unarmed 2017-2018
2. Old news : Expect more HELIOS of the MI-17 variety and then the MI35
3. The JF-17 are coming
4 .More QRF regiments, There is speculation from this observer that they have been involved in some very dangerous missions.

ROTATION OF TROOPS ON OPERATION SAFE HAVEN
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has since Monday commenced
rotation of troops deployed on OPERATION SAFE HAVEN in
Plateau State.

The aim is to boost the morale of the troops
by withdrawing those who have spent in excess of 6 months
from the theatre of operation to reunite them with their
families. The injection of fresh troops also add to the
efficiency and effectiveness of the internal security
operation. Troops are being airlifted by C-130H aircraft from
Jos, and vice versa, to their various units located in different
parts of the country. Locations covered by the ongoing airlift
operation include Benin, Calabar Uyo, Port Harcourt and
Enugu. Others are Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Kainji, Minna and
Makurdi. The rest are Ilorin, Ibadan and Lagos.

We employ a wide range of ISR assets, manned, unmanned and tactical. Obviously, we would require more assets, so naturally, i also expect more assets in the ISR department.

However although there is a pressing need for Drones, i don't think it is healthy for us to keep buying drones from abroad. That's an area we should ordinarily continue to pursue homegrown solutions. Look at Turkey for instance, those guys are making rapid strides in UAV development. With Amebo, Gulma, Ichoku and the other smaller tactical drones we make, it is time for us to invest in proper MALE UAVs. I mean we are buying Yahbon drones from the UAE, that should provide us the conviction to grow our MALE potential.

On helicopters, we are not hearing anything from the Army about their helicopters any more. Any decent armed LUH should do for the Army in my opinion.

They are coming, i'm just hoping they come in atleast 24 units. 18 single seats and 6 units of dual trainers.

It's hard to see the role both the QRF and Navy SBS now play since the creation of the AFSF.

Wish a naval version(CIWS) of the missile to be developed in the future to replace the problematic Dual purpose guns.

Looks like the defence force isn't satisfied with the performance of the 35mm guns in the C-RAM role. Rheinmetall demonstrated their revolver guns to the defence force prior to the upgrade.

Now that the C-RAM missile looks like to be going ahead. Wonder what will happen to the Stealth Ingwe.

Would have gave SA an opportunity to maintain skills not taught any where but I doubt the lads with the skills(stealth tech) are still around.

Missiles are fvck expensive though

Cheaper to look at a auto-cannon based platform

True that, nothing justifies firing a missile at an oncoming projectile if the projectile itself is not a missile.

Um...what if it's a 120mm mortar which is about to take out an entire section?

How many missiles would one have to fire to stop free falling mortar shells?

If mortar hits a machanised or motorised platoon, they can simply press on and gunships can deal with it. BUT if it's a base or camp that's under 120mm attack, then definitely someone is not doing his perimeter patrol because how on earth does an enemy sneak in such a big firing pipe within range.

120mm mortars can hit at 4,5,6,7km +. It is not beyond belief that enemy combatants can sneak such a system within range.

Army pilots and crews are still undergoing training , as for the airframes and delivery ,no idea ! however several special operations units across tiers including SBS are deployed in the north east .

I concur.

But missiles are still better.

Auto-cannons spent more time on a single target. Effectiveness of them is a bit iffy when dealing with super sonic anti-ship missiles.

Besides replacing the dual purpose guns with another cannon based platform would mean getting something foreign. The Rheimetall revolver gun(Naval version) of the Skyshield being the likely system to be acquired.

Imagine the Biro vessels with: 76mm gun, Remote controlled machine gun, The C-RAM missile and the Mokopa missile. grin grin grin grin Way heavily armed.

I believe there's a market.

Doctrine and SOPs would be drawn on how many missiles are fired at a single target.

In most African peace missions the rear areas stretch into the nearest cities. With us Africans we can't supply our forces with air drops.

It's easier to smuggle weapons into the cities. Peacekeepers can't open amd search every bag of coal coming into the city.

Then they can't smuggle as much shells with them. After that they may have to deal with a quick reaction gunship which would be way cheaper than firing missiles.

Unless there's very important objects you're protecting in your base, like aircrafts or a person like Nelson Mandela is around THEN the costs are justifiable otherwise not even JZ is worth that saving.

I don't know which examples you're thinking of. But a typical U.N mission for example....the amount of higher ups that need to give permission before gunships are deployed, rebels are long gone. This system is not about being cheap, its about saving lives. Giving troops time to get proper cover, after initial incoming rounds are destroyed.

The assets provided are way expensive than the missile used to protect the area they are situated.

Can used to protect rear areas or assets: Command posts, fuel and ammo stores, artillery, ground based air defence systems, air bases etc

In Operations other than war(OOTW) parliament buildings, events(such as the World cup, Madiba's funeral) etc where VVIPs are on the ground, Power stations or plants (Koeberg). The area can be protect.

In OOTW ROE will be tight the decision to engage will come from the top (ministry level). In an urban sitting threats can be masked from the line of sight cannon systems while a decision is sought.

Again our forces will not have the cover of the Gripens at all times only to follow on later.

What the problem with the 35mm guns, remember the DPG on the frigates can do a lot more than the Cheata CRAM could ever doand though I could see a navlized version it would supplement not replace. The DPG are not going any where and are one of the best CIWIS out there.

The 35mm was not purchased for C-RAM. They air defence and that is it. The Sky Shield Radar is what made it possible but even then that was the uninitiated but welcomed result of making the radar better.

Far more basic version of the gun with a far more basic radar have the most kills from the Falkland's war

The Umkhonto and an Exocet class missiles would be an overkill.

Maybe a naval or SAM version of the A-Darter missile.

The battle of Bangui imagine if the regional decided to intervene and SA had to capture Bangui again.

The air port there would be a sought after target by rebels still in the city. Mortars, Chinese rocket launchers etc.

Or say the FIB had to retake Goma from M23.

Paratroopers or elite troops can be insisted into the air port seize it to be used as a command post, logistics base etc. Aircraft bring supplies will be a target hard to ignore so attempts will be made to destroy them on the ground.

Let's just say they are troublesome.

Maybe in attacking surface targets.

It isn't just the fire control unit(radar, IR sensor etc)

I believe it was the because of funds that the revolver guns which were demonstrated to the SANDF(Their C-RAM capability) were aren't purchased.
