Zambia Won't Escape Super Eagles rout - Shorunmu

By Augustine Akhilomen

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu has said that he's excited with the calibre of players invited to the team, insisting that the Chipolopolo of Zambia would have no hiding place in Lusaka.

On Thursday, team's coach Genort Rohr named a formidable squad that would tackle Zambia in a 2018 World Cup on October 9 in match day one, with the regular players such as captain, Mikel Obi, Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Carl Ikeme, Victor Moses, William Trust-Ekong, Leon Balogun, Alex Iwobi and Elderson Echiejile in the squad.

Nigeria will be hoping to begin their campaign on a winning note in a bid to have a strong hold of the group which also has Algeria and Cameroon in it.

Shorunmu, a top notch goalkeeper in his playing days told Soccernet.com.ng that the current blend of players in the Super Eagles squad have all it takes to get maximum points in Lusaka.

"I am realy impressed with Genort Rohr's Super Eagles list for the Zambia clash. Atleast there is an element of consistency in terms of the players he first invited against Tanzania," Shorunmu told Soccernet.com.ng.

"I have this believe that this team is good enough to rattle Zambia in Lusaka, meaning Nigeria can smile home with the maximum points because I don't see them escaping defeat.

"There is no denial that the game won't be easy for Nigeria, however, I am optimistic the team won't disappoint us," he said.

Exclusive: Ikeme Remains Super Eagles No. 1 Goalkeeper - Agu

By Augustine Akhilomen

Ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia, Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu has thrown his weight behind the team's goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme despite reports of a possible recall of Vincent Enyeama to the squad.

The senior national team have been relying on Ikeme since making an impressive appearance in his debut match against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2015 under former boss, Sunday Oliseh.

Enyeama who was regarded as one of Nigeria's best goalkeepers, retired from the round leather game due to an unfriendly relationships with Oliseh. The former captain was in goal as Nigeria won their third Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 and also part of the team to the 2014 World Cup where the team lost to France 2-0 in the round of 16.

Although there have been rumours of a possible return to the Super Eagles by the technical adviser of the team, Genort Rohr in a bid to beef up the goalkeeper department, however, Agu told Soccernet.com.ng that Ikeme still remains the choice of the technical crew ahead of the their World Cup qualifying clash against Zambia in Lusaka on October 9.

"There is no argument that Vincent Enyeama is a quality goalkeeper anytime and anyday.

During his time with the team he was always at his best. However, our attention is focused on Carl Ikeme who has done a good job since the retirement of Enyeama," Agu told Soccernet.com.ng.

"It will be unfair to start comparing the two goalkeepers because I don't think that's necessary. What's paramount at this level is that Ikeme still remains the safest hands of the Super Eagles and I can assure you that barring any unforeseen circumstances, he'll be in goal against Zambia in the World Cup qualifier on October 9."

2018 World Cup: Super Eagles Attack Must be Ruthless Against Zambia - Amuneke

Ex international Emmanuel Amuneke has said, in a recent chat with Soccernet.com.ng, that if Nigeria must qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles attack must be sharp and ruthless in front of goal against Zambia.

The team will begin their quest for a place in Russia when they face the Chipolopolo of Zambia on October 9 in Lusaka and a convincing victory for Nigeria would put the team head above their opponents such as Algeria and Cameroon in the group.

Despite having the likes of Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, and Brown Ideye, Nigeria has always struggled to score goals against teams in Africa during qualifying matches. Gone are the days when players such as late Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi, Samson Siasia, Victor Ikpeba and Efan Ekoku rocked the headlines with goals whenever they represent their fatherland in international competitions.

However, Amuneke who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and also led the Golden Eaglets to win the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile insisted that the Super Eagles strikers must be ruthless against teams, starting with the game against Zambia in the 2018 World Cup qualifier.

"I am not particularly happy with the way and manner some of the Super Eagles strikers have been playing for the team. I can't imagine a situation where we have quality strikers who still end up struggling to score goals whenever they are called upon to represent their fatherland."

Amuneke told Soccernet.com.ng.
"With players such as Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa, Isaac Success, Brown Ideye and Victor Moses I expect nothing but goals irrespective of the teams they face. However, they often struggle to score a goal, something which can be witnessed in the team's failure to qualify for 2015 and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. I must confess to you that if the Super Eagles must qualify for the World Cup, our attackers must be clinical in front of goal.” He concluded.

NPFL Players Are Relevant To my World Cup Plans - Rohr

By Augustine Akhilomen

Ahead of the team clash against Zambia in Lusaka, Super Eagles Technical adviser, Genort Rohr has disclosed that the home based players will be part of his Worlup plans.

The German tacticians made a winning start to his senior national team job with a 1-0 win over the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo.

Having named players such as Jamiu Alimi(Kano Pillars), Emmanuel Daniel (Enugu Rangers) and Ikechukwu Ezenwa (FC IfeanyiUbah) in the squad that confronted Tanzania, it's expected that more of the Nigeria Professional Football League players could be giving a chance to prove their worth in the team.

However, Rohr has admitted that the NPFL would be giving equal chances in the team just as their foreign pros in the World Cup qualifiers.

"I am not loosing sight on the players playing in the Nigeria Professional Football League because they are vital to my World Cup plans. As you are aware that we invited three players against Tanzania and I believe more of them would be part of the team," Rohr told Soccernet.com.ng.

"We are working tirelessly to ensure that we select the best players that will be useful for the task at hand. I am not particularly focusing my attention on the foreign based players because they play in Europe or better than the home based players but due to their experience.

"What we need at this point is collective responsibility and I believe the NPFL players will be relevant to my dream of building a solid Super Eagles." he said.

Nigeria will face Zambia in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Lusaka on October 9 and the Super Eagles list is expected to be released next week.

More Misery For Super Eagles Invitee Musa Muhammed In Turkey

Super Eagles invitee Musa Muhammed is still waiting for his league debut for Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir one year after joining the team.

Since joining the team last summer he has only played four games all coming in cup games, one of which he was red carded, but within that same time he has played three times for Nigeria.

The former Nigeria U-17 and 20 captain was once again snubbed by manager Abdullah Avci in his match day squad for the game against Osmanlispor. As a matter of fact he is yet to be involved in any match day squad for the team in all competition since the start of this season, where they have played 7 games.

Unconfirmed reports has it that the 19 year old has been demoted to the B team of the Turkish side and isn’t even training with the main team, who are presently top of the table in Turkey.

His constant invitation to the senior national team at the expense of other players who are regular at their club side is currently one of the trending topics in Nigeria, with respected Turkish journalist Adnan Adem questioning the criteria used in selecting players in Nigeria.

BAD NEWS: Nigeria Loses Key Player Leon Balogun To Injury Ahead Of Zambia Clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to take on Zambia without key central defender Leon Balogun who pulled out injured early during Mainz 05 clash against Bayern Leverkusen.

Regarded as the back bone of the newly assembled defence of new coach Gernot Rohr, his absence will no doubt create a huge vacuum in the Nigerian defence.

Balogun went off injured in the 9th minute with what looked like a suspected hamstring injury which will keep the dependable defender out for at least two weeks.

He is one of the leaders in the Nigeria defence, initially filling in at right back before being converted to a centre back where he distinguished himself in Nigeria’s last game against Tanzania.

Nigeria will on October 9 begin their campaign to be at the 2018 World Cup in Russia with a tie against Zambia in Ndola, in a group that also has Cameroun and Algeria.

AF Nigeria 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers Algeria
Port Harcourt to stage Super Eagles vs Algeria World Cup clash

Oil-rich Rivers State government has agreed to stage a 2018 World Cup qualifier between Nigeria’s super Eagles and Algeria in Port Harcourt in November, officials have disclosed.

The game is slated for the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on November 7 after earlier reports suggested the game will be played in Uyo, which hosted a recent AFCON qualifier against Tanzania.

It will be the second 2018 World Cup qualifier involving both countries as Nigeria will face Zambia in Ndola on October 9, 2016 while Algeria and Cameroun go toe to toe the same day in Blida.

Rivers State Commissioner of sport Boma Iyaye said Port Harcourt is ready to play the perfect host ahead of the big fixture.

“Rivers State is ready to play the perfect host to the Super Eagles and the international community ahead of this important game,” he said.

“The Super Eagles and Olympic football team have played competitive and friendly matches here in Port Harcourt in the past so this is not novelty in any way.

“It is the utmost desire of the Rivers State Government to support the Super Eagles to ensure qualification for the 2018 Fifa World Cup finals in Russia.”
