We could start with placing an order for 2 Corvettes. Early this year, the Nigerian Navy signed an MoU with the Indians on a partnership to build 1 Landing ship and 1 Hydrographic ship.
Although I like d idea of partnership but I doubt there Is anythn in d market that can compete with the Makassar for d same price

Your point? And yes we knew where the static Air defence was
they avoided those locations, the reason the american also snoop on enemy territory with RC-135 is to plot location of its SAM's,most MIG-23 were shot down by manpads .also the south african air force was never able to completely stop the angolans and cubans from launching their jets in angola, against you in Angola and Namibian . you were basically fighting a war that was unwinnable

obsolete !! i can assure you no sub sahara africa countries has an efficient and effective capability to penetrate an air defence system which consist of soviet era legancy systems e.g SA-2,SA-3 e.t.c mind you this same soviet era legacy SAM systems are now being upgraded by russia, former easten bloc countries

That thing won't even get off the ground even when the EW Denel Orxy helicopter flew over it.

with what ! alpha jets,F-5's,F-7,mig-21 e.t.c if you claimed you had again air superiority over angolan airspace why were you not able to bomb luanda or deny the angloans and cubans from launching their air crafts against south african forces.like america did in gulf war 1 !!!??

Sir, South Africa was never officially at war with Angola. We never declared war on them so we would have never bothered bombing Luanda. SWAPO was the reason why the SADF was there and the Angolans were not happy that we entered their country illegal. So they were the ones trying to get rid of us but they'd loose their lives everytime they tried it hence they called in the Cubans (who also paid dearly everytime they tried helping out).

Just so you know, parliament never approved more than 4000 troops for Angola. Also, they were never allowed to officially go deeper into Angola hence the name "Border War"... If South Africa wanted Angola, it would have fallen easily to South African hands just like Namibia did.

To get things straight, the SADF was a well oiled war machine. The only African country that could pose a threat was Egypt. The fact that the SADF spent so much time in Angola was simply because the South African parliament didn't allow a bigger deployment of troops because neither Cubans or SWAPO posed as eminent threat to South Africa. The biggest amount of troops ever allowed was just 4000 with a handful tanks JUST because Cubans/Angolans were building up heavy armour towards the border with Namibia.

As for the aircrafts, the SAAF still flew in southern Angola despite the presence of the MiG23. It is the Angolan/Cubans who failed to kick the SADF very hard when they had the lasted war gear.

So all in all, the SADF deployed roughly 3% of its force.

I can't categorically say the rank. However it is for senior officers across the military (Navy, Army & Airforce). It also includes for the President and Defence minister.

They don't come in different designs, just the solitary type with leather.

It is budgeted under accessories. It's just similar to the staff German WWII generals carry.

And that means we could penetrate the area. Again what did there jets do? I mean they had far more aircraft in theatre than SAAF, had full radar cover, Fixed and mobile AAA and SAMs and where far closer to the area. The Angolans could fly there fighters in clean setting where all SAAf aircraft had to be dirty to reach the area and then had no fuel other than what was needed to drop there bombs. Angola and Cuba where the ones who had to drive us out and there air force and air defence failed. SAAf routinely bombed targets even with all the AAA in the area. That was back then. These days we could operate with impunity in a similar area thanks to the Gripens reduced RC and advanced EW suit

UK EXTOLS NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES
The United Kingdom has expressed satisfaction with the
successes recorded so far by the Armed Forces of Nigeria in
the tackling of Boko Haram insurgency in the North East and
promised to collaborate with Nigeria for further success. The
United Kingdom Assistant Chief of Defence Staff, Rear
Admiral Simon James Ancona made this expression when he
led a delegation of the UK Ministry of Defence and
Engagement on a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Chief of
Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin.
Rear Admiral Ancona reiterated that the way the Nigerian
military subdued the Boko Haram terrorists has further put
the Nigerian Armed Forces in particular and the nation in
general on a positive radar of global assessment index. He
commended the military and allied security agencies for
their doggedness and sacrifice that have led to the
decimation of the murderous terrorists group and called for
sustenance of the onslaught to wipe insurgency from our
land.

I agree completely. With 3 units there would be real need for a logistics ship, it would be able to play that role. Amazing ship.

the americans bombed hanoi because they knew the strategic importance of that city,if fresh suppliers of weapons, ammo, equipment's were being offloaded from ships in luanda port. isn't that a vital military target !?your also forgetting that back then UNITA was a well funded, equipped rebel than even syria FSA by the C.I.A only in comparison with the mujaheddin in Afghanistan.the real reason was you didn't want to escalate this war ,dragging neighbouring countries in support of the Angolan government

So somebody posted this some threads ago, what's going on here and Who else noticed the Nigerian Air Force personnel ?

It's a medical evacuation exercise in a C-130, organized by US Airforce Africa Command for all the Nations in the West-Africa sub-region. It is also an old photo, i'll say 2010, 6 years ago.

it's the African partnership 2016

They're prone to electronic jamming which is what the EW Denel Orxy and Gripen would do.

If all fails, we fly the SKUA so they give out their location then take them out with long range artillery.

South African parliament didn't want the SADF inside Angola only the governing politicians did. When the Portuguese fell in Angola, the South African politicians used it as an opportunity to capture Luanda before Angola was declared independent... 3 small columns of the motorised troops were entered to take Luanda.

The 3 columns numbered less than 200 soldiers, they were very successful in pushing aside whatever defense Angola threw in. Just those few guys took half the country and handed it over to UNITA. They were approaching Luanda when the Cubans intervened with heavy weaponry and for the first time an Eland 90 vehicle was lost, which made the Cubans broadcast their propaganda internationally.

When the South African parliament saw the Eland 90 on the news, they immediately questioned the operation and forced the generals to pull off whatever assets the SADF had inside Angola because the campaign was never authorised by parliament... Parliament only allowed border patrols and all the bombings the SAAF took were permitted as tactical strikes somewhere close to the border. So South Africa was never gonna bomb Luanda openly, we hadn't declared war on them like we did with the Germans in Namibia or Italians or the Koreans.... However if Angola had declared war on South Africa openly, then they'd feel the might of the SADF.

As for the other African countries, what you might not know is that Zambia and the Zaire were actually supporting South Africa in getting rid of the Communists in Angola especially the Cubans. As much as other SADC hated Apartheid South Africa but they could not do anything militarily about it even when South African Special Forces did countless incursions in their territories.

Remember this, if the most armed country in SADC (South Africa excluded) couldn't get rid of just 3% of the SADF then what hope would the rest of SADC have if things went full scale war.

I can count 7 ships docked. I think for an African nation, we have quite a large fleet. Also apart from the donated ships, the oldest ship in our fleet is just 34 years, that's mid-life of the ships. If we can increase serviceability to 85%, that would be fantastic.

It would be nice if we can build proper fighting ships in the Cyclone class (52 meters) to add to our fleet. Armed with surface to air, anti-ship missiles, powerful radar and a 76mm super-rapid gun.

remeber that even for NATO nations, 50% operationability of naval vessels is a big achievement.

1. We didnt bomb Luanda because that would go beyond our scope of "limited war". Also, take a look at our aircraft inventory... notice we lack strategic bombers?

2. SAAF did a number of raids on forward airbases, thing is that most of their airbases were out of range (as were ours) hence they didnt bomb any of ours either.

SAAF operated in a heavily contested airspace

You realise that we never engaged in total war in Angola right?

Unless there was an operation inside angola, SAAF basically did nothing there.

What I think you are not taking into account is this:

Those systems were able to be dealt with when we operated the Mirage (both SAM's and the Aircraft facing them were from the same era)

Now we have those same SAM's facing modern fighters. Thus the logical conclusion is that the fighters will perform better.

You see?

Did that bombing by the USA change any thing? Bombing or sheeling Lunda would of been a escalation that SA did not want. The Russians for example had a small fleet in angola and never sailed in to Namibia, The Cubans and Angolans did not bomb nambia. All sides had a unwritten rule since no one wanted a total war. The losses would of been to high. There was a lot of politics in the war

SA on a number of occasion launched raids on Angolan towns with special forces. They where typically in and out before any one knew what was going on. They blew up ships, supplies, fuel depos, a refinery, bridges, train engines.

This method was chosen since it was impossible to proof SA did it. Sure they suspect SA but could not prove it.

The missile accuracy is then deepened on the crews training and range drops a lot. How many African nations train to do that how many have the need simulator for it. The star streak simmultaor cost more than a launcher for example. On the Optical mode they no threat.
