Sorry OP, i do not really agree with u (thats if i understand u fully)

U saying the experience over paper qualifications.... I say, the experience AND paper qualifications. Its like saying sm igbo dude that has sold drugs all his life shld be employed as a pharmacist over a trained pharmacist.

As much as i get the direction of ur point... If u ever had to recruit or be amongst a recruitment panel, u will be surprised the number of CVs one wld hv to work thru and the kind of trumped up experiences people claim.

Nigeria isnt aplace u can contact a former employee for a true assessment of any candidate. (even if that employee was sacked for burning down the server room). Except the person is frm a well knwn firm.

Finally, one wld just rather err with the dude that has a computing/product related certificate/diploma over one who doesn't; assuming they all hv those trumped up experiences.

Ps: sorry mehn... Nigeria isnt a normal society. .. Things dnt work straight forward here most of the time.. Lol

Instead, I had years of on-the-job and formal training in good technical and operational practices. My later success in web app development, cloud computing and system maintenance was mostly built on detecting the absence of good practices.

After all you've said, your blunorth.org is a WordPress site?
You made a good point sha.

Ict is very broad and it's very interesting. It's unfortunate thst we don't have up to date ICT trainings in our universities. Imagine our schools still teaching BASIC and FOTRAN only. I wonder how many of our computer science lectures have knowledge of Java, C#, python or OOP.

Mark Zuckerberg was already a guru in programming while still in school.

similar experience here, i have been programming since after leaving secondary school, then it was vb6,but the lack of a clear cut employment market for programmers have made me to loose interest in the field.experience have taught me not to take computer science graduates serious.

Seriously? its a discipline that proves ones self and capacity. It is more than talking. Put the brain to work. Anyway If you know of any vacancy, my contact is 08162346067, 07057686385.

please get the academic background from Higher Institution. Develop your skill of interests outside school and get certification. This is my honest advice.

Those dt have d academic and get skills/certification certainly do better and earn better than those without the academic.

In Nigeria we are our own problem.
There's no way going to University means you will be thought everything you need to know about the course you are studying, be it an IT course or others.
University is meant open your mind, and expose you to the problem, it is left for you to go out and explore more, do independent research. But we don't... At least most of us don't.
In Nigerian Universities, students will be given term paper and will "COPY".
Give them project and they will "COPY"
We go for exams, and still want to "COPY"
So most graduates in Nigeria come out half baked out of their own making "NOT THE SCHOOL"
The school is there to open a door, you have to pass through the door into a new world and figure things out for yourself

sorry, i would say demonstrated ability, i can easily easily bet my lunch money that 99% of Nigeria's current nysc members can't code a simple exchange rate converter/calculator with simple point and click GUI in any programming language so why should i respect their qualifications? respect is earned.

Start by researching the various professional areas in IT. If you can read posts here on NL then you can do that:
Infrastructure: Virtualization, Networking, Storage, Backup, Security, Cloud implementation etc
Data/Business Intelligence: SQL stuff, Data integration, Data visualization/Reporting, Data analysis, warehousing, mining etc
Big Data
Programming
Web development
Cyber security/forensics/ IT auditing, Penetration testing, IT governance etc
Software testing / software assurance

Then understand the various IT solutions global market leaders and their related products - SAP, Microsoft, Oracle,, Cisco, Dell/EMC/VMware, Citrix, Google, Amazon, Red Hat etc etc etc.

When you have a good understanding of some of these then you can decide on what to go for and stick with it to expert level.

Nigeria is still scratching the surface as far as IT is concerned but lots of opportunities will open up as free oil money from government dries up especially for those who deliver nothing. Result becomes crucial when free money stops and that's when Nigeria and Nigerians will start to truly appreciate and reward excellence and real substance.

You will get there!
