children understand more with ''illustrations'' so, you can use things that happen around them in the environment to impact the knowledge to them. And you dont have to be too strict to them because once students starts fearing a teacher the same will also apply to the subject of the teacher.

U may be d problem, don't just solve the simple one mix both complex and simple one for the to digest. Don't be like my former maths teacher who solve only the examples in the text book.

I am a class teacher in a primary school and I recently discovered that my pupils have a challenge in Mathematics, I am determined to change their situation so I have been employing different teaching methodology known to me, recently I discovered, through the feedbacks from their parent, that this has not been working.
When I give them class work they do it correctly in class with little assistance, but in the case of assignment they hardly can do it on their own. These are pupils who perform well in other subjects, I cant point out where the problem is whether its with me the teacher or them the pupils. Pls any one with an idea on methodology that can be used should please help. I really feel for them, I have my own children.
find every means of making it fun and giv rewards for outstanding performances

Just like a pupil in my class, if you give her addition under HTU, under unit, she does addition, tens subtraction, hundred addition again. I don't know what's she is thinking. I feel like breaking her head. Every day, she brings back her homework incomplete.

It's not boring

And it's very important because
Math is important in everyday life for several reasons, which include preparation for a career, developing problem-solving skills, improving analytical skills and increasing mental acuity. On a daily basis, people are presented with different forms of data that must be organized and absorbed in order to make decisions. Daily activities such as making purchases, saving money, planning for retirement, choosing insurance and calculating expenses require math skills.

And OP change your teaching method, try to break it down bit by bit and as you teach ask them if they understand and what they don't understand they should ask

And also let them know why they should learn maths.

Its like the foundation of life, foundation of almost everything else.

U are right Sir. Mathematics is d foundation of science and technology.

Mathematics is not boring. Follow the advice given and most importantly if the school management is not after quantity but quality then follow this style.
1. When you give an example you give a class work on the exact example and continue subsequently.
2. No matter what the class u are taking make sure they recite multiplication times first thing when you enter the class, possibly from 2 times then you proceed as they improve.

What's your discipline?

I used to have same problem, but my husband put me through. Different topic with different method. It was easy for me to teach the olodo of olodos last year.

It can be frustrating, Pele. I don't even know how to explain it to u sef. But try and google any maths you want to teach them and also watch you tube. They have simpler explanation there

First and Foremost, you need to deal with every child on an individualistic basis.
Understanding each child's level of understanding and retaining ability.
Once this is achieved, come back for more.........

looking for how to improve your students' performance is quite commendable. I'd suggest you find a way to symbolize what it is that you are teaching your students. try to break it down & make it as simple as possible. also when giving examples, solve the equations half way and call on some of the students to complete it. also go through the homework you give them together with them and point out where they made the error. in all, you'd need to spend more time on the mathematics compared to other subjects

Try this and thank me later. Step1: Make sure each student has a personal maths textbook. Step2: Give them assignment everyday from the book.
Re: How Do I Help My Pupils To Be Good In Mathematics? by Jackossky(m): 12:34pm On Sep 30, 2016
The problem is you are not that good in mathematics...
so before teaching them any mathematics topic,
first of all revise at home, borrow some of those kids test book and solve all the mathematical problem in there....then call someone from your surrounding that you know that he is a dunce....teach him,and if that kid can be able to get what you are teaching him,be rest assured that you will deliver wonderfully in the class.......

or if that is not the problem, work on your personality.... its either you are too harsh on them or you are autocratic...Make sure that they like you....pupils find it difficult to know the subject of a class teacher they hate.....
Be like a model to them and teach them as a friend
My head master always tell me that 'No child is dull, every child has his or her own learning style'

Am saying all this because I was once a teacher.......
Thank me later....

Hi there,

I understand how frustrating it could be when it seems you are giving your all, but results are not showing for all that effort. I give you kudos for caring enough about your students; do not give up. I do not know which exact primary class you teach so some of my points may be a bit off tangent, but just try to pick out what you feel is most relevant.

First off, you need to start viewing yourself not just as a primary class teacher, but as a scientist, social worker, and psychologist. This is because, as a teacher you constantly need to be gathering data about your students, helping them achieve their full potential not only academically but socio-emotionally too (as these are linked); to do this, you need to understand the reasons behind each of their actions and attitudes. So view this current circumstance as a challenge which can be overcome if you tap into all these fields.

You need to find out why there are discrepancies between your students' performance in class and at home; do they copy from each other in class? Is the take home assignment more difficult than what they are given in the classroom? Do they use the excuse of not understanding to avoid doing homework whilst at home?

Secondly, the best people to answer these questions are your students; let them give you feedback as to what makes take home assignments very difficult, and address the root cause.

I also suggest that you let the students redo their take home assignments in class to get a clearer picture of what is really on the ground; let them assess their own work based on a marking scheme you provide, then let them reflect and write out what they did wrong (with regards incorrect answers), and what they should have done to get the correct answer; this gives them the opportunity to map out their mental processes hence learn from their mistakes; this way, your students are more active in their learning process.

In general, at the beginning of every term/semester, you should have come to an agreement with your students as to what you expect from them regarding classroom and learning behaviour; they should also be able to tell you what they think you can do to make their learning process more fun for example the use of games to learn Maths. Rules and regulations should be laid out, with consequences of disrespecting these highlighted; both you and your students should agree on these that way a contract is binding all behaviour. For example, not attempting to do an assignment has its consequences (even if they do not understand questions in an assignment , they should at least scribble something down; it is not just about getting a correct answer but the willpower to try and the perseverance to keep thinking of a solution). GET YOUR PUPILS TO COMMIT.

Another trick would be to let them quickly scheme through take home assignments when you give them out, and raise any misunderstandings they have; that way there should be no excuses of not completing take home work.

Every student is unique when it comes to their learning needs and styles so you need to get to know each of your students in that regards.

There is the VAKS learning styles, which is an acronym for Visual learners (learn best through pictures, diagrams, and charts and by reading ), Auditory learners (learn best via listening and speaking), Kinesthetic learners (learn best by touching and doing); there are free tests you can print off the internet which will help you assess the learning style of your students; also you could explain the different styles to them, and let them right down the best way they learn. For each lesson, you need to ensure that you incorporate a bit of each style. In addition, ask them to give you feedback on how you can make the class more interesting, and the subject of Maths more fun.

NB: you may not be able to do all they say, but at least incorporate one or two into your lessons that way they know you truly care about their progress and are willing to bend to help them; they will reciprocate by also putting in more effort than before.

Also, students are mostly motivated to study Mathematics when they can link it to their every day interests; find out what each student is interested in; is it soccer, music, fashion, science fiction movies, dancing etc. For example, you could talk about how skilled soccer strikers are able to approximate how fast they should run before shooting the ball in a penalty stakeout ; or how individuals who own fashion businesses use addition and subtraction to calculate profit and loss. Try and give them interesting take home projects that involve the application of Maths instead of the boring old plain Maths questions- you could ask each student to make a presentation in their own way (a poem, draw a picture, build an object, dress up ) about the application of Maths in an area they are interested in. A child who loves the fun learning environment created by his or her teacher, and is motivated to learn, will learn no matter the obstacles.

You should have learning objectives for each student depending on their Maths ability; that way each child moves at their own pace; so as some are solving more complex problems, others start with much simpler ones. This could be a challenge if your school does not supported differentiated instruction

You need to be creative as a teacher, and not follow the old boring way our ancestors have been using to teach; every year, your class teaching technique should change to suit the needs of new students who have their own unique way of learning.

I wish you all the best

Times-Table

1st tinz 1st, U must get them 2 learn and memorize the TT.
This is the 1st course of action for anyone interested in being a mathematician. TT is d foundation/bedrock of maths : it is a 'catalyst' which speeds up the rate of a child's understanding in maths. I'm speaking from experience as (once) a student and presently as...........u already know nah!

When I was in primary 3 some gazillion yrs ago, I can remember I used to score zeros in arithmetic, but this came to (full) stop once I encountered a 'just employed' teacher - Mr Adebiyi in primary 4. I teeeeeeell u: ds man can cane/flog beat?! Thru out my schooling days I've never met a more 'wicked', crazy teacher like him.

Once primary 4 commenced, d 1st tin ds man did was 2 ensure we all 'chant' and memorize the times table. It was a daily routine - and ur ancestors pity u if u miss just one, lolz......ur own don cast be dat!

So, 2 cut a long story short, na so d parole start o,............ and small-by-small, na so man pikin begin gada mozzu 4 maths o. I teh u, d tin worked like magic. I began to perform very well in d subject........... and through out my schooling days, maths became my best subject........ and dts what has been putting food on my table till today!

IMPORTANCE OF TT
The fact remains, as aforementioned, TT is d bedrock of maths!
This is because, irrespective of d calculations/topics involved, U can't run away from either 'TIMES-ing' ie multiplying or dividing. That's what mks it the it!!!

Then I used to think Mr Adebiyi a 'wicked man'.......... but...... alas...... he's 'ma hero!

maam, what class do you actually teach? If you teach primary 3-6, it quite easier unlike 2 to1. Like someone rightly said, "Children learn well through illustration." Make it fun. Try to make it interactive. If you are dealing with equations, try to analyze it in simpler words. The children may not actually be very sound now, but it will aid them a lot. Tell a lot stories with numbers.

Let's say for eg. 2x+3x=? Work more on their mind to understand those variables (x) as just ordinary (sweet) and stop using too much of UNKNOWN.

Another is not everyone will pick up at the same time due to maturity of the brain, but with a method that is like everyday scenario, they will pick up easily.
