Should I Take This $1200 Job Offer Or Not? by Goddys(m): 11:43am On Oct 02, 2016 |
Please I need an advice of experienced peeps here. A friend of mine working in Dubai wants to link me up with a factory job of 400k salary, and also I am due to partake in one year vocational training in Nigeria Law school that would enable me to practice as a lawyer in Nigeria. Now I'm left in the dilemma of accepting his offer to link me up with the job or proceed to Nigeria Law School to qualify as a lawyer in Nigeria Please what do I do? 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Speeddial, you're offering really bad advice. A $1200 job in Nigeria is not the same as a $1200 job in Dubai. Sure, people earn at least N500,000 monthly here in Nigeria, and with the exchange rate, it is almost the same thing $1200. This same people are complaining about the cost of living in Nigeria becoming expensive. Now Dubai is not Nigeria. It is a richer economy with better infrastructure. You know why? Because they have a working government. And you know what makes a government work? Sufficient revenue. Now you know some of the sources of that revenue? Tax. You will be taxed at every corner. You will have to handle all sorts of bills to live comfortably; lighting, rent, water, heating, insurance. You will handle your own transport and feeding. All this and more on $1200 and you still want to become a millioniare. Even Americans who earn $40,000 (N16,000,000) per year complain about piling bills and debts. And it is $1200 that'll turn you to a millionaire overnight abi? Debbys, there's hardly any career prospect for a factory worker. There's more in becoming a lawyer. It's best to think of your future and tailor your decision around it. The question you should be asking yourself is this; "Where do I want to be in years to come?" When you figure that out, you should be able to make the right choice. 278 Likes 12 Shares |

Craven most nigerians who live aboard don't do skilled jobs, but unskilled. The government of those countries won't employ them with their nigerian certificate, except they study further over there and get a higher qualification. Unskilled jobs even pay better in dubai, a driver in dubai receives higher than a banker. Now, everything depends on priorities, if he knows what he wants, its up to him to go there and get it. Quite ok things are expensive there, but everything all boils down to management. He can cut cost of expenses he makes over there and save more. I'm looking at the future my self. Let us break it down this way for example, we have 20 of him in two equal sets 10/10, group1 go abroad, while group2 stay in nigeria and go to law school. I can assure you, group1 will be all settled in 5years, but the fate of group2 will be very dicey. I'm sure 6 out of 10 will still be on the streets hustling. 38 Likes 1 Share |

I have learnt from all of your contributions... I think I will continue in my career path. Nothing can be so dignifying than being a lawyer. With time and by God's grace, I will reap the benefits of the calling. 37 Likes 1 Share |

Speeddial: If we're being honest with ourselves, living abroad is not as easy as people assume. You know how many homeless people America has? And it's not as if these homeless people can't get up on their feet, dust themselves up, and secure menial jobs. Even studying over there is very expensive. You hear of people owing student loans amounting to tens of thousands of dollars, loans that they struggle for years to pay up. It's hard for people over there too. And I just feel it's a mistake to think the suffering will stop once you leave the country. Truth is it doubles. Also, I'm not sure I'll advice anyone to choose becoming a driver in America over a banker in Nigeria - or a factory worker in Dubai over a Lawyer in Nigeria. I think it's better to choose a defined career path with prospects and grow in that area. That's what takes you places. 33 Likes 1 Share |

247Dior:Its sad that atimes opportunity that comes our way can't be assigned to another because of some conditions attached to such opportunity. I really wish I could assign the opportunity on your behalf but I can't. My friend that wanted to link me up has many other friends and brothers he could have linked up with the job before he contacted me. I can't be so insensitive to ask him of the job on behalf of any person other than myself. Thank you 27 Likes |

Craven:I know so many layers in nigeria who have worked for 30years and can't even boast of 200k monthly, and know u have a job of 400k monthly as a young man, you want to trade that for name(lawyer) In fact I can count how many lawyers how receive 400k genuinely, they are few of them. He won't be a factory worker forever. In america, most persons don't go to college, they decide to work after high school so as to raise funds and do their own businesses. But here in nigeria we think school is everything. The richest people today never got employed with their certificate. 55 Likes 2 Shares |

Goddys:You are very correct, but I'm talking on general terms, I gave an example earlier, 20 persons like you in two groups A and B equally divided. A go abroad, while B stay home. 'A' will all be doing ok in 5years but 'B' will not all be doing ok maybe 4 out of 10. I know someone who did taxi job in America, but today he is a billionaire, he own chains of petrol stations and other businesses and even employ lawyers. 10 Likes |

Speeddial: I'm not saying school is everything. But then don't compare the American education system to Nigeria's. Bill Gates dropped out of school. And so did Mark Zuckerberg. And they didn't drop out of just any school, they dropped out of Harvard. Only people with great potential get into Havard. Bill and Mark are not just any men, they are very intelligent men in their field. And when they dropped out, they didn't drop out to become drivers or factory workers. They dropped out to pursue what they had interest in. People like Gates and Zuckerberg grow to become Chief Executive Officers and Chief Technology Officers, or Financial Managers and Managing Directors, or Senior Associates and Partners. Have you ever heard such a thing as a Chief Driving Officer? Or a Chief Factory Worker? Or an Executive Dish Washer? There are no prospects in jobs like these. They might make ends meet, but that's about it. Lol don't play yourself. You don't have to work in a big company to make it. You only have to find something that grows you intellectually and excel at it. 40 Likes 4 Shares |

Craven:It seems you are not a Nigerian, or maybe you don't live in this country. PhD holders have at a time put in application for a driver position in dangote group of company, and now you are very optimistic that going to law school is best preferred to factory worker who will be earning 400k for a start? 11 Likes |

Speeddial:You don't get it. . . if he was making that $1200 and living in Nigeria then no problem. . . but in a high standard society like Dubai, its almost nothing. . . after settling bills upon bills and taxes upon taxes, before he'll find money to tale care of himself, he probably won't be living half as well as he would be if he were a qualified Nigerian lawyer 12 Likes 1 Share |

AnonyNymous:You think dubai is UK? The economy of UAE is relatively stable compared to most countries. Government even subsidise food and water, even electricity. Most companies provide accommodation for its workers. It all depends on the type of life you want to go there and live. If you live life with modesty, there is no how you can't save 200k in naira, and that's pretty cool. 9 Likes |

I want to say something here based on my own opinion.i am not saying that going to law school is bad or something....you can always go to law school...Why not make use of this good opportunity of working and earning an income for yourself cause its an opportunity that just came..$1200 is approximately or almost 600k in Naira...I can bet u that most lawyers in NIGERIA haven't even earned up to 600k after law school which is just ur monthly salary..i have friends who even went to law school who re sitting at home as i speak,i also have those who haven't gotten an attachment to an chambers as i speak,i also have a cousin of mine who has decided to do business since the job is not forth coming who also went to law school..So my dear u see that even going to law school doesn't guarantee your getting a good job that could pay as much as $1200..Lemme Stop here..i believe i have spoken very well like a brother..Thanks 21 Likes 1 Share |
