Ohhhh so now... The NCAA and US was backwater huh?? From back in the days? Looolll...

Pele played in the US you know, wink in his twilight years.... smiley

It's not my fault the internet is devoid of clear citations for Usiyen's goals. Even wikipedia puts it as 14 goals now... A former thread on NL in 2012 with citation put it as 15 goals...

Here it is: https://www.nairaland.com/1074465/super-eagles-all-time-highest-goal

The records are a bit sketchy but I know when I researched it, it was indeed 15 goals in 24 matches.

It's not easy getting records from the 70s... Even the NFF no dey help matters.

So based on his records, the clips I saw and his records in the US.... Usiyen was a super striker.

Even someone's opinion( someone who watched him play) says it all...

Like I said earlier... Check out more on Usiyen for yourself... History is one-sided... Look from all perspectives... smiley

What you provided is someone's opinion on nairaland. That's not a reliable source. Where did Wikipedia give him 14 goals? See, if there is no reliable source, there is no point insisting on what you cannot back up.

Yes, the US league was back water in the 70s. Famous players went there to completely retire. Pele played there when he was way past his prime. He even came out of retirement at that time at the age of 35.

See what wiki said

After the 1974 season (his 19th with Santos),
Pelé retired from Brazilian club football
although he continued to occasionally play for
Santos in official competitive matches. Two
years later, he came out of semi-retirement to
sign with the New York Cosmos of the North
American Soccer League (NASL) for the 1975
season though well past his prime at this
point...

Loooolllll...... And you think you adore "Yeking" more than I... Hahahahahahaha...

Abegiii... Just live with the truth. Stop being monotonous in perspective. smiley

See from all sides of history and not just the "so called pioneer" side.

I am putting down no one. You guys have been the one doing that all debate. I have subtly avoided it thus far even when the temptation came (though I subtly dropped a sniper remark for Sir Forgiveness on Yekini but I still laughed it off... Loollll). But you guys were bullish about it. So stop crying saint. Loooollllll....

goldfish80:

This argument is going way out of line and quite nonsensical. Do you think you love Kanu more than me?
I have no problem if you think he is the greatest Nigerian export. But driving home your argument while making back hand compliments against Keshi and Yekini like the rubbish "top ten sef" snide remarks is something I take exception to.
I can see you lots are already saying Yekini is a local champion. A man whose record has yet to be matched. Nigeria's first APOTY.
It's like a French man calling Michelle Platini a local champion to drive home how much he adores Zidane.

What exactly is wrong with you guys?

You can continue belittling Yekini's achievement and make jest of his record, but I promise you , as you get older and develop more in your though process, you will realise how way out of line you gave gone in putting Yekini down just to win an argument online.
Am done with this gutter argument

Uhmmm.... He missed a goal. It's 15 goals in 24 apps. (0.58) I have already stated that before.....

Yekini's is 37 goals in 58 apps... (0.64)

Had Usiyen played at least 50 games.... Yekini won't hold the record.

Usiyen was Nigeria's first authentic Super Striker not Yekini.

At USA 94, where were Yekini's goals?? He wasn't even our stand-out performer at the two world cups he played in.

Kanu also scored important earth-shaking goals for Nigeria. Atlanta 96 comes to mind.

He also gave the killer pass to Utaka for that famous win over Cameroun at Afcon 2004 to break Cameroun's hoodoo over Nigeria at the Afcon. We can go on and on... But Kanu takes it.

Usiyen na baller but he won nothing in 1976 AFCON. Full stop! grin

When the Authentic came, he did. Full stop! grin

At 1994 World Cup, he SCORED NIGERIA'S FIRST EVER GOAL IN THE BIGGEST FIFA ORGANISED COMPETITION IN THE WORLD. grin

Did Kanu make CAF team of the tournament in 2004?

Sorry! grin

It's the 70s and there's nothing I can do about the NFF not having "officially on their site" what I know and researched to be true.

The person's opinion on nairaland had a citation. Look closely. smiley

And yep... Wikipedia of now, gives him 14 goals... But I researched 15 goals and confirmed it back then...... it was couple of years ago. I was much younger.

Here is wiki's: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria_national_football_team

Note: stroll all the way down the page... smiley

Like I said, the 70s have some sketchy records but deep research will bring it all out. I remember kunle solaja's piece in soccer star back in my secondary school days on this. It was recorded 15 goals for Usiyen. But I can't put the link here... They don't have the online archive. And finding the paper itself... Phewww... Not funny mehn... smiley

Usiyen was a doyen in front of goal. You don't wanna talk about the opinion of one who watched him play. #justanopinion but precious all the same. It's up there somewhere.... In my reply to Sir Tbaba1234.

As for Pele, I did say "twilight" years naa... smiley

So uhmm.. Be very honest... Whose goal caused more ripples across Nigeria and Africa...?

1. Yekini's goal against Bulgaria (Nigeria's historic 1st at the world cup)

2. Kanu's goals against Brazil at Atlanta 96.

Yekini's goal scoring record for Nigeria is amazing. Yet, he did not make the list of the first phase of the 100 greatest footballers. Kanu did.

This guy told me "If Kanu were Brazilian, he'd have be considered alongside Pele, Maradona and Messi" Kanu is his favourite player of all time and BTW he's Brazilian!"......BBC's Peter Okwoche from Brazil.

That singular act by the FIFA and the Olympic Committee which made Olympic soccer event an underage tourney downgraded that event. That's the Gospel truth

Gospel truth that what?

Who doesn't know d olympic is an age grade competition.

It is down graded yet Neymer and Brazil celebrated as though they have won the World cup.

Romario was not in Atlanta 96.

USA 94 win against Bulgaria was huge. First world cup, the anticipation was there. I remember the excitement leading to the world cup.

It is difficult to compare.

In fact, i remember the celebration when we first qualified for the world cup. Algeria wanted to kill us in Algiers, attack after attack. We managed to get the draw, we needed. That qualification was bigger than the win against Brazil.
