frumentius: OFF-TOPIC "The joys of being a superpower", but can they fight like that against a credible enemy with a credible air defence and electronic warfare capability? I don't think the US "know how to fight", yes, the world brush poor little countries and make multiple H.D. However when pitted against a somewhat credible foe, balances rapidly change. I mean, take Serbia as an example 78 days of non-stop US/NATO airstrikes, 1000+ aircraft and 38,000+ air sorties and all that to achieve what? 10 or so Serbian aircraft destroyed (most on the ground), 20+ APC and tanks destroyed and 1000+ Serbian soldiers dead or wounded. That is out of a force of 130’000+ Serbian soldiers, 80+ aircraft, 1,400 artillery pieces, 1’270 tanks and 825 APCs (all figures according to Wikipedia). The 3rd Serbian Army Corps basically came out unharmed from this massive bombing campaign which will go down in history as arguably the worst defeat of airpower in history! When you transfer that sort of training to Africa, you'll see why African troops trained solely by the US never does well in battle. I also noticed with the MATV, they sell a lot of units, those vehicles are expensive and battle after battle those vehicles always seem to perform badly. Look at Saudi MATVs in Yemen. 2 Likes |

Henry240: That's because it was a largely strategic and not tactical iperation, they still got: 121 aircraft 93-120 tanks 150-220 APCs 339 other vehicles 389-450 field guns As for American training, they have proven that their long term "Army Building" operations work while they maintain oversight (S. Korea, ARVN, JDF etc) problem is that they dont accoubt for the fact that small nations cannot operate formations like the US do. As for small unit training, they have been extremely successful in Colombia and Kenya. Other nations are better, IMO the British and French are better because of their long colonial experience, but the Americans can work. Another consideration is that the only unit that is "trained to train" are their Green Berets and Delta. For US training to work you need to set up extremely long term training operations |

NAF RECEIVES PATENT RIGHT CERTIFICATE FOR LOCAL PRODUCTION OF HYDRAULIC DIAPHRAGM ON MI-35P HELICOPTER The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, has awarded the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) the patent right certificate for local production of hydraulic diaphragm on the Mi-35 helicopter. The certificate, awarded by NOTAP on 29 September 2016, was presented today to the CAS, Air Mshl Sadique Abubakar by the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, AVM SS Bala-Ribah at a brief ceremony held in Abuja. The NAF, in 2011, had gone into research and development on local production of the hydraulic diaphragm in order to address the increasing difficulties faced in procuring the items from abroad. More so, there was the need to reduce the downtime in maintaining the Mi-35P helicopter fleet because of their critical roles in the counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations in the North East. By 2012, the 3-man team, comprising Air Cdre Imafidor, MWO Moses and Sgt Bawa, recorded its initial breakthrough when it produced the first prototype. This however did not last beyond 4 flying hours after installation on the aircraft. With further research, the team was able to produce other prototypes, and eventually recorded its major breakthrough with the 5th prototype produced in 2013. This lasts more than 150 hours on the aircraft, even more than the one produced by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). It also has the additional advantage of dual application on both the Mi-35P and Mi-24V helicopters unlike the one produced by the OEM which only works on one helicopter type. The certificate presentation marks a major feat in the research and development efforts by the NAF to achieve technological self-reliance. It is also a plus at this time of economic downturn by saving the nation scarce foreign exchange that otherwise would have been spent if the item were to be procured from abroad. 2 Likes

africaken254: 1. He is a pseudo-dictator 2. He is funding genocidal militants who are destabilising the DRC 3. He has sent his goons across Africa and the world to assasinate and intimidate opponents. 4. His regime is extremely authoritarian, has a long record of detentions, abuses etc of citizens. Zuma is allot of things, I am counting down the days until his term ends, but in the end of the day he has a strong human rights record (mainly because he is too incompetent to do otherwise) and is not destabilizing the region. 2 Likes

Patchesagain: That's the thing from Kosovo, all those numbers are disputed. However i was specifically referring to the 78 days offensive. The results from that air campaign was abysmal. It calls into question how the US fights, against a worthy opponent, the concept of air superiority falls flat on it's face. The Americans can build a long term modern armies, but can those armies fight. I agree that the JSDF did not exist after WWII, however Pre-World War II Japan was a world power, so the potential was always there. Can the South-Koreans fight? They have 30kl americans as insurance. The Iraqis sure can't, Philippines.. NO. I think because they cannot apply the concept of air superiority which is the focal point of American combat, i fail to see how those nations would be successful. The Colombians have always being good fighters. It is hard to Judge Kenya, the Mall fiasco was quite embarrassing. In my Opinion, the West does not provide the sort of training that guarantees security in Africa. Nigerian navy NNS Unity in Sri-Lanka

Henry240: Well, the Air campaign did allow the Americans to meet their ground objectives in the region. And it would be silly to question their air effectiveness when you look at what they did in Iraq. The American force in Korea is a "trip-wire" formation, its there so that in the event of Northern aggression the Americans can go to war immediately, circumventing congressional approval and other diplomatic formalities. A short-cut if you will. As for the Koreans, yes then can very definitely fight - if you are interested you should look up their exploits in Vietnam, they were probably the most effective forces in the region, probably on par with the Aussies. Phillipeans is a sh1tshow of a country, I have been there, its more of a reflection of their own incompetance rather than that of the Americans. As for the Columbians, they have been fighting FARC for 50 years, they only turned the tide once uncle sam weighed in with training and support. Kenyans, well the Mall was a disaster, but I think such situations would be a disaster for anyone. Even if such an attack happened in America, you would see a simular death toll. On the other hand, look at their effectiveness in Somalia, some minor set-backs but between them and the Ugandans the tide of the war has definitly turned. 3 Likes |

africaken254: If by "done more for Africa than SA" you mean "destabilize the entirety of the Eastern DRC and assasinate opposition across Africa" then yes, you are correct. Mass anarchy? Buddy, thats not within the ambit of this conversation. As for "threatened by his progress". If a short man who grows quickly does not threaten a giant. 1 Like |
