Northern Nigeria has had to grapple with some appalling news report over the years. The region is not aided by the Boko haram insurgency. Consequently, many Nigerians especially in the South, have demonized the region that anyone who wants to travel there will be discouraged.


Although some of these widespread reports are blatant ‘lies’, we at Jumia Travel recognize the beauty, hospitality, and congeniality of Northerners. Thus, we identify some of these lies or perceptions so as to dispel them. Perhaps, this will reassure or embolden visitors to explore places like Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna and other Northern cities.


They are religious fanatics


Islam is the dominant religion in the North. Hence, their values and beliefs are greatly influenced by the religion. There are many dos and don'ts that are normally overlooked in the south. Some Nigerians see this as fanaticism which is not the case. But, if you can adhere to and respect these cultural and religious beliefs, you will live peacefully among them.


They are deprived


The influx of underprivileged Northerners into Lagos, the heartbeat of Nigeria have resulted in the generalization that any individual who hails from the region is deprived. No. There are many of them who are very comfortable and wealthy and have never been to Lagos or Abuja. In fact, the richest man in Nigeria and Africa, Aliko Dangote is from the region!


They hate education


Boko Haram means western education or non-Islamic education is a sin. This is what Boko Haram is propagating. However, beyond Boko Haram, Northerners are now embracing education. Not only the education of the male child but also the female child. Even though there should be more enlightenment, parents are sending their wards to school.  





They are impeding Nigeria’s development


A number of political commentators have suggested that the north is preventing Nigeria from reaching its potentials. This is actually wrong. In almost every Nigerian region, there are challenges. The government is doing its best to tackle some of these difficulties. It is very unfair to isolate a region and say it is impeding Nigeria’s development.


They are hostile


Northerners are arguably the most hospitable in Nigeria. They will offer you shelter and food as well as treat you like one of their own. But what they only want from you is not to desecrate their religion and culture.

Let's fact check this article. Even though they didn't provide much in terms of rebuttal. The article amounts to Northern Nigeria region is not that bad.

Arguements 2: (They are deprived)

Those rich are what you call outliers. If you look at per capita gdp (which is hard to find) they are lowest regions in country. They still do primary same subsistence farming techniques.

Next this regions politicians are against restructuring based on fiscal federalism/state resource control.KANO – Elder Statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai slammed idea saying its because Yorubas are jealous of them. Instead of focusing on improving economy they prefer to to feed off productivity of more successful regions. The quote below shows this.

I am sure your ''travel'' to many northern states means just driving through, otherwise you would have acknowledged that what the report stated is mostly true.

No region is more hospitable than the north. If you have stayed any where in the north for 6mnth - 1yr i am sure you would attest to that.

Places like kaduna which is like the lagos of the north (remove FCT), the business hub is Ahmadu bello way. Igbos own most of the building/businesses there. How many of them ahd been driven away on fridays? There shops are open and they run their businesses the way they like. Many of them would rather die there than leave the north.

Suleja too in niger state is another example, the no of igbos there and the size of their businesses is something you have to see to appreciate, how many of them told you they have to look over their shoulders anytime they are roaming around ? Infact many of them feel more secure in the north than in their own states

They might be poor and 'backwards' as your definition of backwards means. But it still remains a fact that they are contended with whatever little they have. And mostly, they are not ready to sacrifice the head or other body parts of their relatives to make quick money.

Yes! The northern Nigeria is the problem with Nigeria and I say that with all certainty!

Apart from the introduction of sharia law and their constant refusal to support any bills to reform our obnoxious constitution, more cases of ethnoreligious violence driven by religious intolerance and tribal bigotry have occurred in the north than any other region. In which other supposedly democratic nation do we have citizens subject to other laws outside the nationally constituted laws? The truth of the matter is that northern Nigeria devides the country more than any other region in Nigeria.

the fact that this pack of evil lies got likes and endorcement from certain posters just shows the level of bigotry and hate from a particular region of this country.
I am certain that this poster and most of his ilk know these are lies, but they perpetuate them anyway as it helps them sleep better at night
