Hello guys, as the economy bites harder, and it is becoming increasingly impossible to get new battery/ies......but like you know now, as resolute as a 9ja man we must forge ahead in our drive to go green and free from all heartache of power in 9ja. I got some used batteries from a big brother, 6 pieces in all, about 4 already bulging on the sides. Only one was able to give me about 5 hours of power but at the point of throwing them away i was adviced to take them to a battery charger for boost charging and I wan't to tell you that the decision really payed off, after about 4days of charging, each of the 'dead' batteries give me over 5 hours. The only down side is that the inverter alarm for low battery starts beeping in less than 30 mins of loading the battery but still goes ahead to give me power for next four and half hours with the annoying beeping sound. You may want to give those weak batteries a push before you finally dump them if cash is an issue like in my case. Goodluck my friends..... 1 Like |

cooldipo: It's OK once you can go tru that stress . its jst short term management to me. Just did an overhaul of less than 1 yr old NEXUS 200a batteries & found out 1 outta 4 was faulty , I decided to sell the tested OK ones for 50k each ...HOLLA !!!

dunka, cost will depend on the size you want. it varies from 100 liters to 300 liters. as for plumbing, you will need a little modification to your existing hot water line only. instead of having all those conventional electric water heaters littered about your bathrooms (and kitchen?) depending on the number of rooms you have; now you only have one central water heater feeding the whole house. you won't be needing all those aristons anymore for a very long time - even during the cold harmattan season. no more bathing with cold water just because phcn refused to supply public power to heat up your water. |

@goergeD1 errmmmm, I have stayed in a hotel that uses that setup, the drawback is that if you hv bad weather consecutively in a row, then the system doesn't produce hot water, when I complained abt non availability of hot water, the hotel technician explained that he would go on turn on the electric water heater, since sunlight has been poor, so am wondering how you intend to combine the 2 systems, or if you would. is ur roof flat or decked? |

reprobate, i don't know the kind of solar hot water system they have in that hotel in question but remember that as with every setup of this kind, capacity sizing is very key. the package itself comes with a hot water tank designed to retain hot water for up to three days in case of bad weather. however if your capacity sizing is smaller than your house needs you may end up using up all the available hot water before the sun shines again (just like your battery bank sizing for pv solar). i won't be surprised if that hotel has just one small tank serving all the rooms. also, the package comes with an auxiliary electric water heater that can be turned on to heat water should weather conditions become extreme. again, in this part of our world, if you size your system adequately, you will never need to use the auxiliary heater. as a matter of fact, testimonies abound from people who have both systems installed and they have never needed to turn on their electric heater for years now. 3 Likes |

GeorgeD1: I have the 300 liters mounted on my rooftop and centrally connected to all the bathrooms and kitchen! I can tell you that the water sometimes gets very hot and you have to be careful with the mixer so that your skin does not get scalded. Imagine the cost of running gas cooker to boil hot water, or the cost to fuel the generator so your heaters can run. This is what I call green living. No need to worry about hot water except of course during those periods in the rainy season when it rains continuously for several days in a row. Cheers 5 Likes |

RipVanWink: Done that to gel and lead acid maintenance free and the response has been good for both. I have heard of desulphator on here but I haven't used one. How often do you use them? How much do that cost plus any noticeable change since you started to use them? |

DUNKA: Mine is mounted on a flat concrete roof, but I have a friend who mounted his on a regular long span aluminum roof and it is performing just as good. I will snap the installation and post it here next time I visit him. I bought mine from a company in Lagos called PROACTIVE TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED. Their website is www.proactivetechng.com. You can call them for further discussions on price, delivery and installation depending on your location. In my own case I made arrangement for the installation of mine as I did not want to bother them traveling from Lagos to Port Harcourt. dunka, mine would be mounted on a separate tower besides the main water tank. i consider a 300 litre weight of water too much of a risk to put on my roof. if my roof were made of concrete like johnkester's probably i wouldn't mind at all. but for those installing the 200 litre or 100 litre version i'm sure the weight would be light enough to fit on to an aluminum roof. |

A friend's morningstar ts-mppt-60 solar controller got damaged. He suppects that the damage might have been caused by accidental disconnection of battery power to the CC before the disconnection of the solar input. His solar setup Voc is around 90V and his battery bank is 24V. Does a disconnect of battery before disconnecting solar damage morningstar mppt charge controller? |
