chigoizie7: Are you certain there was substantial investment in rice farming? Last I checked the govt never lifted a finger with regards to that. |

I think this is a clear case of policy somersault. However, it will still be very necessary to place import restriction on rice and most food we are importing in the long run. The only problem is the timing. 1 Like |

Hmmmm, this one is strong, well if you ask me, this is a good move, and also not to good. Good in the sense that, opening the border will easy tension as rice will flow in and the prices would drop at least for a while, so people can buy and probably keep, because people setting up rice farms aren't ready, people are starving, however the government should shut down the borders after a short while, when our rice production increases, this way everyone will be fine, both investors and consumers. |

I don't understand why people are rejoicing rice will be cheaper, the last time I checked rice was >12,000naira at Ceme (I understand that exchange rate may have affected) but rice is more expensive than before at Ceme. The transportation and settling customs officers fee and of course profit was what drove the price to 18k and above.I was surprised when people were blaming the president for the price hike. This will even make it more expensive , import duty 10%, levy 60% . Is it the women smuggling the rice that will pay these fees, they will end up bribing more than normal and of course this will reflect on the price and the imported rice will be far more expensive I directly forcing us to eat our rice. The only difference is they may no longer have to smuggle the rice but those levies will make it difficult for the price to come down, even if they smuggle and bribe its still the same. Its very likely the price won't go down, I won't be surprised if there is a hike in price. 1 Like |
