The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has given out an order that 51 corps members in four states are to repeat their one-year service to the nation for violating various rules and regulations.
The corps members caught in the web, hail from Nasarawa, Sokoto, Niger and Enugu states, under Batch ‘B’ Stream 1.
Eleven defaulting corps members were affected by the disciplinary order in Nasarawa and Sokoto states, while Niger and Enugu states recorded 24 and 5 cases, respectively.
The management of the National Youth Service Corps revealed that the offences included failure to report for service after documentation, being absent and truancy at places of primary assignment.
During the passing out event of the corps members in Lafia, Nasarawa capital, Habiba Bappah, coordinator of the scheme in the state, said 1,936 members of the Batch B stream 1 corps successfully passed.
She said while 11 corps members were ordered to extend their service, two got four months extension for absconding for some months without permission.
In Sokoto, Thomas Yamma, the state coordinator, said 11 corps members were to repeat their complete service year, while seven had their service extended by between two and four months, for various offences.
He said out of 2,112, five lost their lives during the programme, describing the death of the corps members as “divine’’.
The NYSC also extended the service year of 24 corps members in Niger for continuously been absent from their places of primary assignment without permission.
Bolade Loto, state coordinator of the scheme, made this known at the passing out parade of the 2015 Batch ‘B’ stream one corps members posted to the state.
The coordinator said 2,193 corps members passed out in the state.
In Enugu state, three corps members also lost their lives during the course of the programme; one died in camp and two others died in their home states.
NAN reports that there was no gathering and passing out parade which usually holds at Okpara Square in Enugu.
The corps members were requested to collect their discharge certificates from the headquarters of the local government area where they served.
She said that five corps members would be repeating their service year for various reasons bothering on truancy and dereliction of duty.
