Reuters is reporting that there are about 100 youth protesters the CBN office in Abuja. ABUJA Oct 11 (Reuters) - Nigerian policemen and soldiers on Tuesday dispersed around 100 youth protesters demanding the resignation of central bank governor Godwin Emefiele over rising inflation and a falling currency, a Reuters witness said. The protesters marched to the central bank's headquarters in the capital Abuja, accusing it of failing to drag Africa's biggest economy and energy producer out of recession and stopping the descent of the naira against the dollar. In front of the bank's main entrance, they held up placards saying "Emefiele must go" and "Where is your conscience, Emefiele?" until policemen and soldiers scattered them. It was the first sign of public unrest targeting the central bank during the current economic crunch. Nigeria is in recession as a slump in vital oil revenues has hammered public finances and the currency, driving up the prices of imported goods and basic food such as milk. The West African nation needs to buy abroad to meet most of its food needs. Annual inflation accelerated to 17.5 percent in August, compared with 9.3 percent in the same month last year. In June the central bank dropped its peg of the naira to the dollar, prompting the currency to depreciate by 40 percent in a step meant to attract more investors. But bankers say the move has only sped up the decline of the naira on the parallel black market, which has become the benchmark. On Tuesday, the naira traded at 310 against the dollar on the official interbank market and 470 on the black market, according to dealers. By the time PMB and Nigerians realized that Emefiele is only turning out policies that will favour his Masters( The so called financial gurus and banks owners) it will be too late. What manner of a CBN governor will increase MPR from 12% to 14% in an inflation that is cost- pushed? What manner of CBN Governor will operate a floating Forex policy where the difference between interbank rate and parallel market rate is more than N100. Why is our foreign reserves depleting fast............... Emefiele can deceive some gullible Nigerians but the foreign investors are not deceived. That is why they are not bringing their funds. 1 Like |

If I were to be in abuja or anywhere close to there, I would've definitely join the protesters. Let's face the fact, that CBN governor is highly incompetent, confused etc. He should resign ASAP. His recklessness is out of this world. How can anybody explain his forex policy? His stupid rules against commercial banks? Look at how the guy 'destroyed' the naira because of his dumb-skull. TheFreeOne:And why do you think people are protesting against that dumb-ass governor? The president made a terrible mistake by passing that vote of confidence on the man and this is one mistake the president needs to correct ASAP. I hope he listens to words of wisdom by doing away with that confused CBN governor. The naira will continue to have a free fall as long as the CBN keeps dishing out unfavorable policies. Look at how his dumb 14% monetary policy caused so many people to loss their jobs. Exchange rate should even be a topic for another day. Besides this present CBN governor has the lowest performance index rating among all the former CBN governors. 1 Like |

simpleseyi: Afonja fools keep exibiting their bigotry. So now the stubborn goats had issue with Afonja fools that made them allow themselves to be used by slave masters to prosecute a war that didn't concern them. These fools were dealt with one by one by their masters except the greatest Afonja of them all. He has no say, his survival depends on following their dictates. It made that Afonja to pitch tents with his sworn enemy, an upcoming Afonja, just because he had to exhibit his inborn servitude trait. The stubborn goats have survived and live freely while the Afonjas know they cant survive outside slavery. Stop calling the mods man. Let's discuss. |
