Nwabuoku sure of AWCON success  Super Falcons skipper Evelyn Nwabuoku says that her team will go all out to retain the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations trophy when the competition kicks off in Cameroon next month. Nigeria, hosts Cameroon and six other countries will do battle for Africa’s crown in women's football from 19 November to 3 December in the cities of Yaoundé and Limbe. The Super Falcons are the defending champions of the competition, having won it in 2014, defeating Cameroon 2-0 in the final. Nwabuoku, who now plays for French side En Avant de Guingamp, says that the team are determined to retain the crown to make up for the disappointment of missing out on Rio 2016. “We have been talking to ourselves and we have vowed to make our fans happy and make up for the disappointment of not qualifying for the Olympic Games,” Nwabuoku told supersport.com. “The team has started preparations already and we (foreign-based players) will soon join the rest of the squad for training ahead of the competition. “I must tell you that we are focused on one thing and one thing alone. We want to win the trophy, we want to make our fans happy. “Above all, we want to win for our coaches and make them proud of us.” Nigeria are drawn in group B of the tournament alongside Mali, Ghana and Kenya. Banyana wallop Egypt in friendly  Mamello Makhabane © Gallo Images Banyana Banyana beat Egypt 3-1 in an entertaining friendly international match played at Dobsonville on Saturday afternoon. Goals from Mamello Makhabane, Refiloe Jane and substitute Shiwe Nogwanya ensured coach Desiree Ellis began her coaching tenure with an impressive result. Yet, with good finishing Banyana Banyana could easily have routed their North African opponents as they spent most of the afternoon camped in Egypt’s half but had a solitary goal to show for their effort in the first opening 45 minutes. But signs that this Banyana Banyana side has the potential to do well at the CAF Women's Afcon championships in Cameroon that begin next month, are there for all to see. Andisiwe Mcgoyi could have given Banyana Banyana an ideal start in the opening minutes but she fluffed an open chance after a cross from the left. However, Banyana Banyana were finally rewarded in the 30th minute when Makhabane slotted home a penalty after an Egyptian defender had committed a foul in the box. But Banyana’s joy were short-lived moments after the break when Noha Tarek fired home a low shot that gave Andile Dlamini no chance in the very first minute of the second half. That goal gave Ellis’s charges a wake-up call and they again rallied forward in numbers but failed to convert several chances that came their way. But the industrious Jane was never going to be denied her moment of joy when she made a maze run through a number of Egyptian defenders before slotting home. It was a brilliant solo goal that lit up Dobsonville stadium and Egypt were to be on the back foot for the rest of the game. Moments after her goal, Jane tried an audacious shot from outside the box, but her attempt hit the crossbar with the Egyptian goalkeeper Maha El Demerdash stranded. Subsitute Shiwe Nogwanya then made it 3-1 for Banyana Banyana with almost the very last kick of the match as the hosts romped home 3-1. AWCON: Omagbemi recalls Onome to Falcons squad Super Falcons coach, Florence Omagbemi has recalled experienced defender, Onome Ebi back to the team after she was dropped from the list of players pencilled down for the Africa Women Cup of Nations starting next month in Cameroon. It was gathered that it was the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF bothered by lack of funds, that trimmed the list of foreign-based players to be invited for the tournament. However, there was a rethink after it dawned on the NFF that Nigeria cannot afford to fail in Cameroon.  Onome Ebi “It is good Onome is back; she is one of our best legs. We cannot afford to go to Cameroon with inexperienced players. We are aiming to win the tournament and the NFF must give us all the support we need to pull off the feat,” said one of the team players yesterday. The Falcons have opened camp in Abuja with the home-based players. The foreign-based players like captain Evelyn Nwanbuoku, Desire Oparanozie, Ebere Orji, Francisca Odega and Onome are expected to join the group two weeks to the tournament. The Falcons won the 2014 tournament in Namibia without losing a match. They beat Cameroon 2-0 in the final. I see a motivated Super Falcons brushing aside their opponents enroute to an African "La Decima". However, the NFF needs to organize 2 or 3 annual friendliest for the team against the top 10 nations in female football. Moreover, the NFF should strive to ensure that the SF get to participate in the annual Algarve Cup. Participation in that tourney and regular friendlies against the top FIFA-ranked nations will only help improve the team's tactical and technical skills. 2 Likes |

FANS BLAST OMAGBEMI OVER OGECHI IBE'S FALCONS CALL-UP Football followers have expressed their discontent at the Super Falcons trainer over the invitation of the American born defender after watching her in training in Abuja. Football Fans in Abuja have blasted Nigeria’s senior women coach Florence Omagbemi over the ‘undeserving’ national team call-up handed to US born defender Ogechi Ibe. Irritated fans who watched Ibe questioned the rationale behind her invitation seeing her poor show in training at the Fifa Goal Project pitch in Abuja on Wednesday. Joshua Adebayo, a spectator, told Goal: “How on earth can a rusty and poor player get invited to the Super Falcons? She is not deserving of this call-up at all. “Her presence for me is a huge distraction. I don’t think Omagbemi knows what she is doing. She is just not fit for the national team. I’m disappointed.” Another fan, Samson Ameh blasted the Nigeria Football Federation for permitting the invitation of such player stressing that Ibe has nothing to offer the national team. “I really don’t know what she is doing here. The NFF must take action on this. She cannot even control the ball, heavy and lacks idea. “I fear for the future of Nigeria football if awful players like this continue to get called up in the name of coming from American at the expense of better one in our leagues.” When asked about Ibe’s call-up, Omagbemi declined commenting, insisting her focus on getting the team ready for Cameroon but assured only the best will make the final squad. “I do not wish to comment on her for now.  Three Swedish-based Nigerian stars, who play in the top league Damallsvenskan, are set to represent the Super Falcons at the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon next month. They include Faith Ikidi (Piteå), Rita Chikwelu (Umeå IK) and Ngozi Sonia Okobi (Vittsjo), and the trio expressed their happiness at being called to the national team. Rita Chikwelu was out in the international wilderness until she was invited to the Super Falcons squad that tackled Senegal in April. “I’m very happy to have the opportunity to play with the Super Falcons again. It is a great honor for me. For various reasons I have not had the chance to play in the National Team since 2012 in the Nations Cup, except for two qualifying matches against Senegal in April. “We will have a good team traveling to Cameroon, I know our coaches will prepare the team and the players in the best way for the tournament. “We professionals abroad have been playing a long season and we are all in great shape,” Chikwelu told allnigeriasoccer.com. She added : “Faith Ikidi has as usual had a very good season in Piteå as a central defender, Okobi has trained hard and played many good matches. “I believe in our team and it’s a good mix of players from Nigeria and professionals. ” In Sweden, the Nigerian players in Damallsvenskan are: Faith ikidi (Piteå), Rita Chikwelu (Umeå IK), Sonia Okobi (Vittsjö), Josephine Chukwunonye (Vittsjo), Ogonna Chukwudi (Orebro) and Sarah Michael (Orebro). All the players are important for their teams and Nigerians should all be proud of them. Rita Chikwelu had again a very good season. Her team Umea has been hit by injuries but Rita has carried the team on her shoulders. She has been one of the best midfielders in Damallsvenskan this year. Faith Ikidi was voted Defensive Player of the Year 2015 in Sweden, a prize that she could have had even several times before. She has caught the eyes of many in her games and is a role model for many Swedish footballers. Okobi has worked hard in the midfield in a new tough league. Nigerian Wonderkid Babajide Scores Fourteen Goals In Cup Game  The prolific Nigerian striker Rinsola Babajide scored fourteen goals in UEL Womens Football Team’s 40-0 demolition of UEL in a Cup clash at Hackney Marshes on Wednesday. Nigeria: AWC Title Won't Elude Nigeria, Omagbemi Promises Super Falcons coach, Florence Omagbemi, has promised that the team would do everything possible to retain the African Women Championship (AWC) title in Cameroun. For the first time since the AWC started in 1998, the Issa Hayatou country is playing host to the championship, which Nigeria had hosted on three occasions, 1998, 2002 and 2006. The Falcons have won the title seven times (nine times overall), including their triumph in Namibia two years ago. The US-based Omagbemi, who captained the Super Falcons for 14 years, winning the title on five occasions (1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002), told The Guardian that she would use Cameroon 2016 to announce her arrival as head coach. She said that all invited home-based players currently battling for shirts in the Abuja camp have shown signs of determination, adding that her squad for the championship is gradually taking shape. Omagbemi revealed that she was in constant touch with all the invited professional players, saying: "I speak with them on daily basis and they are eager to join us as quickly as possible." She waved aside media reports that the players were threatening to boycott the AWC Championship in Cameroun over the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to settle their allowances for the qualifier against Senegal. "Someone told me about the report but there is nothing of such in our camp. I am sure some people just want to distract us but we will not allow that," Omagbemi said. Meanwhile, all invited foreign-based players have been given up till November 7 to report to camp in Abuja or forget the championship. Omagbemi is taking charge of the team alongside former goalkeeper, Ann Chiejine and ex-captain, Perpetua Nkwocha. The 2016 AWC will run from November 19 to December 3, with the Super Falcons pitched against their arch-rivals, the Black Queens of Ghana, in Group B, which also has Kenya and Mali.
