The major thing PhD will give you based on current INZ provisions when it comes to PR is higher points-points for qualification and points for studying in the country.

Check INZ website -SMC,LTSSL,ISSL,CSSL to see what occupations fit into your present experience and qualification, then make some projections(this is not cast in stone,it might change anytime)

Though sciences generally stand a better chance of getting PR,the most important thing is still to get a job offer..think of spending 3yrs on PhD and be able/not being able to get an offer..though if you are good in your skill, you stand a chance

PhD in New Zealand is a minimum of 24months and maximum of 4yrs.Immigration rules might change before you finish and there is the chance that the new rules might be or not be in your favour.

A major component of securing PhD in NZ is getting the consent of a would be supervsior. If you are able to do that, most likely you will get admitted. Check the varuous university department requirements to see if you stand a chancee with your grades.

A good proposal will give you an edge

If you can afford to pay the domestic tuition rate and show $15,000 every year for your living expenses, all good

How do you want to cope with 3 kids here?

I cant offer you much more on specifics but THINK ABOUT THESE POINTS IN MAKING YOUR DECISION

please I will like to know if one needs to provide IELTS cert before he/she can get a student visa.

NB: Admission has been granted without it.

Thanks.

Please, which university city or location is the best to raise a family while studying for a PhD in New Zealand? I just want to narrow down the choices.

Would appreciate ideas on locations that are less prone to earthquakes cheesy

bro, this your question na wa oooo grin grin

I believe there is no part of the world that doesn't have its own share of natural disaster,so I cant authoritatively say an area is less prone to one.
However,in terms of earthquake, visit GEONET,the official source for geological hazard information for New Zealand for real time information on earthquakes and other disasters. Earthquakes occur almost all the time-some you feel them, some you dont notice. It all depends on the magnitude. The link I cited will give you a rough idea. I have personally experienced aftershocks in chch lasting few seconds to minutes-but not anything major.

I just did a screen shot of an earthquake as at the time of typing now.

I think all areas are okay. The 7-8 universities in the country are located in major areas

Auckland is expensive but, a good prospect in terms of job during/after your PhD. 30% of students in my circle all have jobs, myself included. benefits of staying outside Auckland includes, higher points when applying for PR, 30% average reduction in terms of your accommodation fee. Nobody can tell you which city is the best because there is no direct answer. You need to do some permutation and combination. So for your answer, you are the best person to determine which city is best for you. No place in the world is safe in terms of natural disaster, that is why it is called a "Natural Disaster"

Thanks for responding @solomoncater

I am playing down emphasis on earthquakes now. My major concern is about cost of living and proximity to prospective university towns/cities. smiley

Will take further look at Wellington, Hamilton, Dunedin and Otago. Further insights are appreciated.

Honestly I am not sure, I can find out for you but meanwhile you can just go on the school sites. Paying installmental can be tricky because you need to show a receipt of your school fees payment for visa application

Hello,

I have gone through the thread and learnt some stuffs.I wanna ask.If my wife gets a Phd position in New Zealand, will they give me full-time work permit? If yes,What kind of job do you think will be available for me?Do you think it will be possible for both of us to survive(accomm.,feeding,Insurance etc) with the kind of job?Like how much do we(Husband and wife) need to show the visa officer after paying her first year tuition?
