*yes
** free or cheap: penta, opv, pcv. Optional and expensive: rota
*** You should see a gynae for six week check. You'll only see paed if you request to.
**** You need a thermometer and paracetamol syrup. Administer 15mg of syrup to every 1kg of child's weight if baby runs temperature. E.g if baby weighs 5kg, administer 0.75ml. This is only applicable to our local paracetamol e.g panda, emzor that have 100mg/1ml written on them.
Some people give paracetamol 15 minutes before or immediately after the shot, then every four hours after.

Good eveng mothers. this is my first time here any protocol to be followed?
pls i v a question. my baby is ten weeks already but his first one month i was supplementing my breast milk with NAN 1 cos i wasnt lactating well. after d first mnth i made up my mind dt we are no longer supplementing nd settled with breast milk alone and today we r 10 weeks plus and i still think im not lactating well cos my bby always wants to b put to breast every mins every sec and whenever i press my breast it doesnt gush out like others would another issue is dt my nipple is damn red and painful probably cos of the force he uses to suck and d frequency of d feeding. pls i need help. has anybody experienced this? and plshow can i boost mu breast milk. still doing exclusive despite d pain on my nipple
I'm not so experienced (my baby is just 6 weeks old) but I can try as much as possible to answer your questions.
First you said when you press your boobies, milk doesn't gush out. Well, truth is milk might not gush out, but you might be Lactating well. I'm a living witness. I've never leaked breastmilk ever. But I tell you, if I use my breastmilk to express milk 4-5 times a day, I get an average of 45oz(1330ml) and my baby only drinks around 28oz per day. I'm even afraid I have oversupply, but I've never leaked breastmilk.

Second, if you're really keen on breastfeeding without supplementing, I will advise you to keep breastfeeding. The more he sucks, the more you produce. You can also try other methods of boosting your supply (Fenugreek, Mother's Milk tea.... etc)

Third, I also have the same problem of baby making your nipples sore. Mine has even tore through my nipples cos he had a crappy latch due to my flat and inverted nipples. I use Medela nipple shield, Medela tender care hydrogel, breastmilk and various methods to cope with the pain and also heal my nipples. Sometimes when I can't cope, I express milk and feed him a bottle, and thankfully because he loves food so much he takes the bottle with no fuss.

Try and get a breast pump to express milk. It helps with boosting your supply and also gives your nipples rest and time to heal. Your baby might also have a shallow latch or not latching on well hence the pain. The biggest culprit is tongue tie. Take him/her to the pediatrician to access if baby is tongue-tied. Don't beat yourself up cos of those issues, breastfeeding is not easy.

You may want to do a search on this thread for ways to boost supply.

Also, how often is baby pooing? Are nappies soaked with pee? So long as a baby is peeing and pooing frequently, they are getting enough food.

How's his weight chart looking? If it's steadily rising then he's adding weight meaning he's getting enough food.

For sore nipples I recommend lanolin, a mommy here says it's sold in medplus pharmacy (lagos). Please ensure he's latching well.

To reduce frequency of feeding try to let him completely empty one breast before moving to the other. The last milk usually contains more fat than the first milk, so it fills them better.

I don't know of other mommies, but my breast milk does not gush out! At most there's a tiny continuous spray, but only when I've not fed him for long.

He seems to be steadily gaining weight, which is good. In my humble opinion, pls continue supplementing with formula whilst trying to increase your breastmilk supply. Though steadily gaining weight, am not comfy with his weight at all. Pls supplement and feed him regularly. Wish you God's Grace. Cheers

Can't precisely recommend any, but whichever milk you give your child should be full and not filled cream. It's not a function of price, three crown is expensive but it's filled. Blue boat relatively cheap is full. Dano has both filled and full. Loya is full, peak is full. Cowbell is filled.

Filled means animal fat was taken out and replaced with vegetable fat. It's healthy for those watching their cholesterol.
Tanks tojued and doubledouble for ur response. Finally settled for Nido.

Welcome.

A few pages back, we mentioned a lot of things that worked for us and our stitches. So please read page 658 and 659. If you can ask someone to check Healthplus pharmacy, you can get all you need. It's an effective solution.

I have no idea about the face-squeezing. Maybe she's farting smiley?? Have you....er...tasted milk?
Thank you ma'am, will read the recommended pages. Milk is good, think I ate something she doesn't appreciate. That leads me to the question are there foods I should avoid as a breastfeeding mother. Thank you

If you are exclusively breastfeeding, no water till 6months. ...but if you are using formula, you must give water. There is no special effects for bottle feeding instead of spoon feeding.
Honey is a NO NO for children less than a YEAR please! So it is not ok....

3.2kg at 6weeks and 3.9 at 10weeks is rather too low.I was in the same situation like you....Baby weighed 4kg at 6weeks(he is 8weeks now). I wasn't lactating well too.
Infect I thought of giving up on exclusive breastfeeding and I came here to rant too . Mamas here encouraged me too.
Doctor told me to feed him every 2hours i.e put him to the breast or pump and feed him. I should also increaSe my carbohydrates intake too....These are what I did and seeing significant improvement;
I had to increase my pap intake. ...My first food everyday before breakfast is pap, tea or oats.I can take the pap as often as i like. I also try to eat every 3-4hours too....I got fenugreek seeds from a mama that sells here too. A satchet of water every hour, a satchet whenever I urinate or poo even if it's not up to an hour I took one .

If you can afford an electric breast pump, please get one. I try to pump at least 3times a day...i feed him 120ml every 2-3hours at most. I can see a remarkable difference in my son's health.. my target is 6kg by 10weeks.
Now I am beginning to have engorgment if I don't pump or breast feed in 5-6hours....

This is actually the time to eat an array of meals as you need many nutritious food in your system. Some foods like milk, beans and cabbage can make your baby gassy(which makes colic worse) and others like alcohol and caffeine can make her irritable and listless(plus reducing milk flow). Taking them in moderation is acceptable.

Barak4real water can be offered in your absence to ease hunger but no more than 20mls at a time. If you are always around and your baby is ebfed there's no need to give water as breast milk contains the right amount of water needed by ebfed babies. Please don't ever feel there's need to sweeten the water even if you have to glucose is a safer choice! Honey can be fatal to babies under 1year.

Loistee sorry for the pain making sure your baby is latching on properly will go a long way in solving the problem cos even with a nipple cream like Lansinoh (4000 naira on konga)which help promote healing of cracked nipples, if the underlying cause is not eliminated you will keep having the sore and cracked nipple. You could also get a nipple shield( konga has it for 1700 naira) to give your nipple a breather.

Also check to see if your baby has oral thrush (a whitish coating in and around the babys mouth) this aggravates and slows down the healing process and could enter your blood stream to cause mastitis.

It's electric....double electric. Medela Pump-in-Style Advanced. I also have no idea why I'm able to produce and pump so much milk. Depending on how long since my last pump, I get between 8-17oz per session.

This morning, I pumped 16oz from both boobs, 7am in the morning. My last pump session was 11:55pm last night. I also try not to pump too much so that my body won't think it's a cue to make more. So I only pump 4-5 times a day and yesterday I got 56oz total from 5 pump sessions

Honey is dangerous for a child less than a year old abi even 15 months self.

Spoon feeding is okay and easier to maintain hygiene than bottle feeding.

WHO says no water before 6 months whether EBF or formula or mixed. Consult your dr on this if you live in an extremely hot area e.g sokoto.

As for ebf, breast milk is already 80 percent water.

Please read the links i put up on this page for immunization. The paed explained very well the different vaccines for different ages and the gap in between them.

I honestly don't understand your card, it's too different from mine.

Immunisation at fmc jabi is everyday, but I believe rotavirus is Tuesday and Thursdays. I took mine on a Thursday.

Stop worrying your head, when you get to FMC the nurses will help you interprete your card. So long as you're humble when asking lol.

Edit: I just noticed your card is the US one. I have absolutely no experience in this regard but you may have to take some catch up shots cos our Nigerian schedule is different.

I pump 4 times a day oo, at most 5 and I haven't really been nursing directly cos my baby tore my nïpples badly, still waiting for it to heal Sha. If I don't pump. I will be so uncomfortable and develop a fever. I keep a freezer stash for when I go to work and can't pump well or my supply tanks. Maybr I should not empty my boobs again at every pump session, I don't even know again.

I heard there is a breastmilk bank that you can donate breastmilk to for sick children or children with mothers who can't lactate well. I'm still looking into that Sha. But you sef na boss Sha oo! 560ml at a go! Wow! shocked
